Cavs Look to Add Scott Williams

Sep 28, 2004 9:20 AM

Keon Clark may have been a no show, but the Cavaliers have moved on and are now expected to sign veteran center Scott Williams to a contract as early as today, pending the results of his physical.  Williams is expected to sign for the veteran minimum of $1.1 million.

The news doesn't stop there either for Cavs fans, with the team believed to be close to coming to terms with ex-Net Lucious Harris.  Cleveland is believed to have offered the sharp shooting guard a one year deal with Harris looking for a longer contract.

Keon Doesn't Show in Cleveland

Sep 24, 2004 10:04 AM

Keon Clark didn't show up for a scheduled workout in Cleveland, ending his chances of signing with the Cavaliers.

The Cavs now have their sights on free agent center Scott Williams, who met with officials from the organization in Cleveland several days ago. Williams, 36, has been a backup forward and center for much of his career. Williams, 6-10 and 260 pounds, won three titles with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. Last season, Williams played in 43 games with the Suns and the Mavericks.

Wagner Was at Risk for Kidnapping Says Lawyer

Sep 23, 2004 3:14 AM

Guard Dajuan Wagner and his mother were once at risk of being kidnapped, a defense lawyer told a federal jury.

The statement came during the drug trial of Wagner's stepfather, Leonard "Pooh" Paulk.

Prosecutors are trying to build a case that Paulk bought 20 semiautomatic weapons in 2002 as part of his involvement in a drug conspiracy.

His lawyer said Paulk bought the guns to "arm his family" and protect Wagner, whose mother is married to Paulk.

Wagner sat with family and friends in the rear of the courtroom watching the opening statements of the trial against his stepfather and three other men.

14 total people were arrested in March of 2003 and charged with running one of Camden's largest drug-selling operations.

The other 10 defendants have pleaded guilty, and the alleged leader of the group will testify against the defendants as the star witness at trial.

Searching for Keon Clark

Sep 20, 2004 10:45 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers want to sign Keon Clark to a contact, serving as their backup center, but there is a minor hinderance; they haven't been able to locate him.

Clark does not have a regular agent and is currently living without modern communication devices.

After being traded from the Sacramento Kings to the Jazz last summer, the 6-foot-11 Clark played just two games last season.

Clark, who averaged 6.7 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Kings in 2002-03, regularly vanished from the Jazz's sight during his rehab.

When Utah traded him to the Phoenix Suns in February, he never reported.

If Clark is not found, the Cavs will consider signing Scott Williams or Sean Rooks.  Another option will be Chris Whitney who played for Washington last season.

Cavs Replace Late Lead Assistant Coach With Brendan Malone

Sep 16, 2004 1:07 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have named Brendan Malone as an assistant coach, President and General Manager Jim Paxson and Head Coach Paul Silas announced today. Malone joins Kenny Natt and Stephen Silas on Paul Silas? coaching staff.

"Brendan knows what it takes to win at the highest level in the NBA because he's been there and done it. He knows the NBA game inside and out and we are very fortunate to have him as a Cavalier,? Paxson said.

This season will mark Malone?s 19th year of coaching in the NBA and nearly 40 years of coaching overall. Malone spent last season as an assistant for the New York Knicks following three seasons as an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers.

"Brendan's experience will be a valuable asset to me and the rest of my coaching staff. He's a veteran coach that shares my vision for success and understands what is necessary to win," Silas said.

Malone was the first ever head coach of the expansion Toronto Raptors during the 1995-96 season and won a pair of World Championships as an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons in 1989 and 1990. He has been an assistant coach in three NBA All-Star Games and worked as an assistant and head coach at the college level for nine seasons prior to entering the NBA.

Malone replaces Mark Osowski, who died Aug. 23 of complications from pancreatis. He was just 41 years of age.

Cavs Looking at Clark and Williams

Sep 13, 2004 11:24 PM

The Cavaliers are attempting to move on in their search for a reserve center.

They thought they might have solved their problems last week when they signed Jake Tsakalidis to an offer sheet, but the Memphis Grizzlies quickly matched to retain the 7-foot-2 center and left the Cavaliers searching again.

The market is pretty bare for big men this close to training camp, but general manager Jim Paxson has some options left.

Among them are believed to be Keon Clark, Christian Laettner and Scott Williams.

Clark, who missed almost all of last season with an ankle injury, averaged 11.3 points and was very productive two years ago for the Sacramento Kings.

The Cavaliers aren't sure about his health or desire to return to the NBA.

Paxson recently dispatched new director of player personnel Mark Warkentien to Clark's house in Illinois to speak with him.

Williams has spent 14 seasons in the NBA with six teams.

He played in 43 games with the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks last season.

For his career, he's averaged 5.2 points and 4.8 rebounds.

He's likely sign for the veteran minimum of $1.1 million and is the type of player Cavaliers coach Paul Silas likes.

Cleveland also had interest in Christian Laettner but he has now agreed to terms with the Heat.

The Cavaliers are likely to try to get a signing done this week with training camp just three weeks away.

With Tsakalidis Out, Cavs Now Look to Keon

Sep 12, 2004 1:20 AM

Cleveland GM Jim Paxson wasn't at all shocked when the Memphis Grizzlies matched the offer sheet to Jake Tsakalidis.

"We thought it was about 50/50 that they'd match," Paxson said.

"Jake is an important part of the Grizzlies' future," Grizzlies president Jerry West said in a statement. "We were very impressed with his efforts and work last season."

Paxson is now looking to free-agent forward Keon Clark to fill out his frontcourt.  The 6-11 Clark missed nearly all of last season with an ankle injury and was traded twice. But two years ago, he averaged 11.3 points in 80 games and was a big difference-maker off the bench for Sacramento.

Clark's been with five NBA teams in six years. He's twice been charged with marijuana possession and was reportedly suspended while at UNLV for testing positive for marijuana.
