Tyronn Lue Meets With J.R. Smith About 'Embarrassing' Jason Terry Play

Nov 30, 2016 7:58 PM

Tyronn Lue met with J.R. Smith following his in-game hug with Jason Terry that led to a wide-open bucket for the Milwaukee Bucks.

"It was an embarrassing moment," Lue said. "Me and J.R. talked about it. We're just going to move forward. We had a discussion about it, he felt embarrassed about it. It was an embarrassing play. We talked about it. We're moving on."

When Smith removed himself from the play, Milwaukee's Matthew Dellavedova zipped a pass to Tony Snell who converted an uncontested dunk.

Lue said there was no "negative motive" for Smith to expose the Cavs' defense like that.

"Obviously we both know it wasn't intentional, but it was just a lack of focus," Smith said after practice Wednesday. "One of the multiple things that compounded onto the loss was just as a team we haven't been as focused as we previously were. Winning and being who we are has a lot to do with that, but we've just got to overcome that and be better as a whole. It starts as individuals and then we can collectively become a group and team and have that mindset."

Lue also took exception with Smith's explanation following the game claiming he had no recollection of the mistake.

Matthew Dellavedova 'Couldn't Pass Up Opportunity' With Bucks

Nov 29, 2016 3:30 PM

Matthew Dellavedova left the Cleveland Cavaliers in the offseason to sign a four-year, $38 million offer sheet with the Milwaukee Bucks.

"It was tough to decide to leave because you're coming off the highest of highs and I loved my time in Cleveland," Dellavedova said Tuesday morning. "Fun team, great group of guys, great organization and fans obviously. But I had an opportunity here that I couldn't pass up to see how good I could be as a starting point guard and really challenge myself. You never know if or when that opportunity will come along again."

Dellavedova is averaging career-bests in points (7.9) and assists (6.3).

"It's been good. It's been a challenge and that's what I was looking for," Dellavedova said. "Just getting to know a new group and a new system, new coaching staff, new city. There's going to be a little bit of an adjustment, but it's been good so far. I feel like I've learned a lot already and I've got a lot more to learn as well."

Dellavedova will play his former team for the first time on Tuesday.

LeBron James Donates $2.5M To Smithsonian's Muhammad Ali Exhibit

Nov 17, 2016 10:26 AM

LeBron James,  his charitable foundation and James’ business partner Maverick Carter are donating a total of $2.5 million to the new exhibit, "Muhammad Ali: A Force for Change."

They join the list of founding donors to the museum that includes two NBA Hall of Famers. Michael Jordan donated $5 million. Magic Johnson and his wife Cookie donated at least $1 million.

"Muhammad Ali is such a cornerstone of me as an athlete because of what he represented not only in the ring as a champion but more outside the ring — what he stood for, what he spoke for, his demeanor," James told USA TODAY Sports in an exclusive interview about the exhibit.

"I think of him every day. Without his passion and goals and morals, I don’t know if I’d be sitting here today talking to you about it."

Ali died in June, between Games 1 and 2 of the NBA Finals between Cleveland and Golden State, and James spoke eloquently about the boxing great. "As a kid I gravitated towards him because he was a champion, but I only knew as a kid of what he did inside the ring. As I got older and I started to be more knowledgeable about the sport, about sport in general and about the guys who paved the way for guys like myself," James said then.

LeBron James 'Had Nothing But Respect' For Phil Jackson 'Until Now'

Nov 15, 2016 2:00 PM

Phil Jackson's remarks about LeBron James and his "posse" has received condemnation from Maverick Carter and has also now caused James to lose respect in the current president of the New York Knicks Knicks.

"Zero," James said when asked if he had any previous ties to Jackson. "No relationship at all. I had nothing but respect for him as a coach for what he was able to do. Obviously he was at the helm of (the team featuring) my favorite player of all time, (Michael Jordan), and also being there growing up and watching him with the Lakers, but I got nothing for him."

Q: "Had respect?"

LeBron: "Yeah."

Q: "Until now?"

LeBron: "Yeah."

Jackson made the remarks during a wide ranging interview with Jackie Macmullan.

"It had to hurt when they lost LeBron," Jackson said. "That was definitely a slap in the face. But there were a lot of little things that came out of that. When LeBron was playing with the Heat, they went to Cleveland, and he wanted to spend the night. They don't do overnights. Teams just don't. So now [coach Erik] Spoelstra has to text Riley and say, 'What do I do in this situation?' And Pat, who has iron-fist rules, answers, 'You are on the plane. You are with this team.' You can't hold up the whole team because you and your mom and your posse want to spend an extra night in Cleveland.

"I always thought Pat had this really nice vibe with his guys. But something happened there where it broke down. I do know LeBron likes special treatment. He needs things his way."

Maverick Carter Troubled By Coded Language Of Phil Jackson's 'Posse' Comment

Nov 14, 2016 10:41 PM

Maverick Carter took exception to how Phil Jackson labeled the business associates of LeBron James as a "posse."

"I don't care that he talks about LeBron," Carter said. "He could say he's not that good or the greatest in the world as a basketball player. I wouldn't care. It's the word 'posse' and the characterization I take offense to. If he would have said LeBron and his agent, LeBron and his business partners or LeBron and his friends, that's one thing. Yet because you're young and black, he can use that word. We're grown men."

Carter has been involved in James' business ventures for more than a decade. Carter is based in Los Angeles, where he oversees the entertainment aspects of James' off-court interest.

Jackson made the statement while revisiting the departure of James from the Miami Heat.

You are with this team.' NBA Has 15 Of The Top-20 Highest Average Salary Teams In Sports

Nov 14, 2016 2:24 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers are the best paid team on a per player basis in the world.

The average pay for the Cavaliers is $8.7 million per season. LeBron James is making $30,963,450 this season while Kevin Love has a salary of $21,165,675 and Kyrie Irving makes $17,638,063. Tristan Thompson and J.R. Smith also make eight figures annually while Iman Shumpert is just short at $9,662,922.

The NBA's new television deal and the effects of Brexit on the dollar-pound exchange rate have led to their rise up the rankings. Last year, there were five NBA teams in the Global Sports Salaries Survey top-20 and now there are 14.

The New York Yankees rank second followed by the Los Angeles Clippers at No. 3 and Manchester United at No. 4.

LeBron James: Scoring Has Never Been On My List Of Goals

Nov 8, 2016 2:16 PM

LeBron James joined the top-10 all-time in scoring over the weekend passing Hakeem Olajuwon. James will also likely become the youngest player in the history of the game to reach 27,000 points.

James is a little uncomfortable talking about his legacy as a scorer since he doesn't consider that a central part of his game.

"Scoring has never been on my list of goals," James said. "Facilitating, getting my guys involved and rebounding, defending, getting blocked shots and things of that nature always ranked above that."

The greatest single play of his career is now likely James' chase-down block of Andre Iguodala in Game 7 of the 2016 Finals.

When James went to Miami in 2010, he saw his shot total fall by two to three per game. But he kept his scoring rate nearly the same. He did it by becoming devoted to efficiency.

"For me to be in the top 10 with so many great players that played this game ... it's an honor," James said. "It's pretty cool."
