Woman Files Civil Suit Against Shannon Brown

May 31, 2009 3:30 PM

Lakers guard Shannon Brown is being sued in civil court for an alleged sex-related incident with a woman in Denver.

Brown's agent, Mark Bartelstein, confirmed the suit to ESPN on Sunday.

Bartelstein said the suit resulted from an incident when Brown was playing for the Bobcats, who played in Denver in late January.

"There was absolutely nothing to it," Bartelstein said. "I find it very interesting all of a sudden Shannon Brown has some success and someone decides to sue him civilly. People can draw their own conclusions. I stand by Shannon Brown. Everything Shannon has said to me as to what happened, the prosecutor verifies."

Orlando Swept L.A. In Regular Season

May 31, 2009 3:07 PM

The Magic were 2-0 against the Lakers in the regular season.

Orlando was led by All-Star point guard Jameer Nelson in both of the victories, but they are unlikely to have his services in the NBA Finals.

Nelson has been out since February with a shoulder injury, but there have been rumors that he might be able to play a few minutes for the Magic.

Kobe Bryant had his first triple-double since 2005 on Jan. 16 against Orlando, when he posted 28 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists.

Magic Finish Off Cavs; Advance To Finals

May 30, 2009 11:09 PM

The Magic defeated the Cavaliers 103-90 on Saturday night to advance to the NBA Finals for just the second time in franchise history.

Orlando jumped out to a 18-point lead at halftime and held off a few charges by Cleveland in the third and fourth quarters.

Dwight Howard starred with 40 points and 14 rebounds and Rashard Lewis added 18 points and 8 boards in the Game 6 victory.

The Magic hit 46% of their shots, outrebounded the Cavaliers by 13, and went 17-for-21 from the foul line.

Mickael Pietrus scored 14 points for Orlando, single-handedly outscoring Cleveland's bench.

LeBron James had 25 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists in the loss, a strong effort but one that paled in comparison to his previous performances in the series.

The NBA's MVP went 8-for-20 from the field, and didn't receive enough help from his supporting cast.

Mo Williams had 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting, Delonte West added 20 points on 9-for-19 shooting, and Wally Szczerbiak went just 1-for-5 from the field.

The Magic will face the Lakers in the NBA Finals beginning on Thursday.

Martin: Nuggets Are Better Than Lakers

May 30, 2009 4:33 PM

Despite losing to the Lakers in six games, Kenyon Martin believes that the Nuggets are a better team than the Western Conference Champions.

"I think we're better than them, actually, to be honest," Martin said after Friday's season-ending loss. "But we didn't prove that. That's obvious, cause they're moving on and we're not. But I think we have a better team than they do.

"Some people are going to say maybe the experience of them getting to the Finals last year was a deciding factor. But I'm proud of these guys in this locker room. And I think as a whole, our team is better than their team."

Karl: Jesus Couldn't Cover Kobe

May 30, 2009 4:30 PM

Nuggets coach George Karl doesn't think that anyone could have covered Kobe Bryant during stretches of Friday night's Game 6.

"No. 24 had a great five minutes at the end of the (first half) that no one in basketball could have covered him," Karl told the Denver Post.

"He made about four shots in that stretch that I think Jesus would have had trouble covering. And those took the game from a manageable game to 13 (points)."

Odom Plans To Benefit From Time Off

May 30, 2009 4:19 PM

Lakers forward Lamar Odom plans to benefit from five full days off before the NBA Finals begin on Thursday.

Odom is suffering from a lower back contusion that has forced him to sleep on his stomach. He is also fatigued and suffering from a bad cold.

"Right now everyone has a little tickle in their throat," Odom said. "Their nose is running. Their body's tired. A day of going to the sauna, get a massage, let my body recover, eat, drink water all day would be perfect."

Odom is also struggling to adjust to a constricting brace that he wears around his midsection.

"It's really tight and it's tough to breathe because it's squeezing your stomach," Odom said. "But what the (heck), I've got to suck it up."

Lakers' Jackson Asks For Referee Transparency

May 30, 2009 9:34 AM

Lakers coach Phil Jackson admitted on Friday night that it is very difficult to call an NBA game, but is waiting for officiating "transparency" to improve the game.

"This is the dawn of a new age, we were told in the last two years," Jackson said before Friday night's Game 6 against the Nuggets. "Transparency, a wonderful word, was going to be used, and we're looking for that to help us. In that regard, we want to use all these aspects, whether it's called credibility or accountability, and use it to improve everything that can happen to this game, because it's a great game."

Jackson was referring to some of the changes the NBA has made in the wake of the scandal involving Tim Donaghy.

Ariza: Lakers Aren't Content Yet

May 30, 2009 9:10 AM

The Lakers advanced to the NBA Finals for the second straight season on Friday night, and they have a championship on their minds.

"It's good to be here, but it's not our goal," said forward Trevor Ariza. "It was just a step. I know we'll be happy when we get that ring."

Kobe Bryant admitted that advancing through the Western Conference this year was much tougher than the last.

"Much, much tougher," Bryant said. "Much more physical. Mentally challenging for us. But we gained valuable experience, went through a roller coaster of emotions."

Miller Surprised By Lakers' Lack Of Urgency

May 29, 2009 3:43 PM

TNT analyst Reggie Miller is surprised with the lack of urgency that the Lakers have shown in the postseason.

"I don't know if it's lack of concentration or discipline," Miller said of the team's woes.

"You think of [Phil] Jackson's teams as mentally tough and focused, and just the casualness of 'We'll just win our home games' is surprising, and we all know that the Nuggets can win road games, so they could be in trouble."

Karl Won't Change The Way Denver Plays

May 29, 2009 7:02 AM

Nuggets coach George Karl says that he won't change the way his club plays even though they are facing elimination in Game 6.

"No, I mean there's a different way of handling emotional, passionate, intense players," Karl said, according to the Associated Press. "We have some guys who are emotional. Maybe a little too emotional. But for me, I'm not going to tell them to stop that because I think that stops them from becoming a competitor.

"Right now, we're competing on the best stage on a pretty good level. I think the Lakers know we're there."

Denver has been whistled for 11 technical fouls in the Western Conference Finals against Los Angeles, but Karl said on Thursday that he wouldn't blame the officials for their 3-2 series deficit.

"We're hoping and we believe that the officiating won't be a problem," Karl added. "When you're getting hit in the back of the head, knocked on your (backside), you're human beings; you react to people of authority. The referees are the ones that have the authority and control the game the way they want to control it."
