Nets Developing Toughness Mentally, Physically

Nov 29, 2012 10:46 AM

The Nets have won 10 games in a month for the first time since 2006.

“People are starting to take notice," said Joe Johnson. "We are a mentally and physically tough team.”

The Nets defeated the Celtics on Wednesday in a game where Rajon Rondo, Kris Humphries and Gerald Wallace were ejected.

“We’re not going to back down,” Deron Williams said. “It’s not about being tough guys or anything like that. But we’re not going to back down. We did a good job of keeping our composure.”

Johnson added: “There was a lot of swings down there. Guys were going in to try and rescue their teammates. That’s the type of team we have. If you’re in an alley fight, we’ve got guys you’d like to be in there with.”

Blatche Takes Shot At Wizards

Nov 26, 2012 9:33 PM

Andray Blatche took a subtle shot against his former team, the Washington Wizards, before Monday’s inner-city battle with the Knicks.

Blatche was amnestied in July by the Wizards and subsequently signed with the Brooklyn Nets.

Blatche asked reporters who were the top three teams in the Eastern Conference before tip-off. When told the top three teams were Miami, New York and Brooklyn, Blatche said he hadn’t been on a team ranked that high since high school.

Blatche followed with a verbal jab at the Wizards.

“Anybody seen how the Wizards are doing?” said Blatche.

Washington fell to 0-12 on the season with their loss on Monday to the Spurs.

Nets Shorten Rotation

Nov 24, 2012 12:09 PM

Avery Johnson gave a vote of confidence to his veteran role players off the bench.

Johnson suggested the Brooklyn Nets begin using a shorter rotation going forward after an 86-76 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

“The rotation that you saw tonight is kind of what we’re thinking,” said Johnson. “And Stackhouse, in his situation, if he’s going good, maybe play two or three more minutes. If not, in the second half we’re going to shorten it a lot because we feel having (Keith) Bogans and Reggie (Evans) and (Andray) Blatche and C.J. (Watson) on the court at some point is very important.”

The 10-man rotation means more unexpected bench time for MarShon Brooks and Mirza Teletovic.

Brooks, a starter in 47 of 56 games for the Nets last season, played a total of 32 minutes in four games prior to sitting out the entire game Friday.

Teletovic, who signed a three-year, $9.7 million contract, did not see action in five of six games before going on the inactive list Friday.

Williams: Dwight Was Never In Play For Nets

Nov 20, 2012 10:45 AM

Deron Williams and Dwight Howard were unable to join forces with the Brooklyn Nets or any other team, but both have seemingly moved on.

"Dwight was never (an option for the Nets)," Williams told the USA Today on Monday. "I don't think (the Magic) were ever going to trade him to us, so it doesn't matter. When he opted in (to his contract for another season in mid-March), it kind of took that option away."

The Nets acquired Joe Johnson and re-signed Brook Lopez as their alternative plan to Howard.

"I'm happy for him," Williams said of Howard. "It looks like he's having fun out there in LA. I know it's a lot off his plate now -- although I guess he still has to hear (the free-agency chatter) because he hasn't said if he'll re-sign (with the Lakers this summer). But he's got a home now. I think he's happy there and I wish him the best of luck."

Wade's Reflection On 2010 Meeting With Nets: Jay-Z Wasn't There

Nov 7, 2012 11:47 AM

Dwyane Wade met with the Nets in 2010 when he was a free agent.

Wade's biggest takeaway was in regards to the absence of one of the Nets' minority owners.

"Jay-Z wasn't there," said Wade. "He was there for LeBron."

Nets Admit Roster Construction Had Heat In Mind

Nov 7, 2012 10:01 AM

The Brooklyn Nets were built with the Miami Heat in mind, with their strongest positions being point guard and center where the Miami Heat are weakest. Billy King also added Joe Johnson and Gerald Wallace, two players that have proven they can compete against Dwyane Wade and LeBron James.

“My thought was looking at Miami, because they were the team,” said King. “I had to build a team that I thought could compete.”

The acquisition of Wallace has been highly controversial since it cost the Nets a lottery pick that became Damian Lillard for the Blazers. Wallace also was possibly going to become a free agent and the Nets had enough cap space to sign him outright.

But the Nets needed to build a case to convince Williams to stay and Wallace was one of those pieces.

King believed that he needed a legitimate small forward, which was a gaping hole in the Nets' roster.

“It’s easier when they’ve been there,” King said of re-signing a player. “You get to know them, and they get to know you.”
