Dennis Smith Jr. is looking for a move away from the New York Knicks, league sources told Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Several teams have also inquired about Smith. 

Ian Begley of SNY previously reported that the Timberwolves were interested in trading for Smith. 

Smith, who was acquired in the Kristaps Porzingis deal last winter, is averaging 5.2 points in 16.1 minutes this season.

Multiple members of the New York Knicks have said privately in recent weeks they prefer to be traded ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline, sources tell Ian Begley of SNY.tv.

It is not clear if any of those players have approached management about a potential trade.

The Knicks signed the majority of their 2019 free agents to short-term deals.

Marcus Morris is one player on the Knicks who has been mentioned in the media as a trade candidate. 

The New York Knicks interviewed four of their assistant coaches before choosing Mike Miller as interim head coach.

“He was just the right guy at the time,’’ one person familiar with the decision told The Post. “He’s got an unflappable demeanor and that was needed for the guys. Plus, he was the only one on the staff with a lot of head-coaching experience.’’

Miller was previously a head coach in the G League and in college basketball.

Anthony Davis confirmed rumors that the New York Knicks made the final cut of his trade list during an appearance on WFAN's Boomer and Gio show.

"Every team was on my list at the time, and then I kind of cut it down, and they were one of the ones that made the final cut. I talked to some guys over there who were still there, and I feel like playing for an organization like that, especially New York, it'd be something that I was always interested in. You see (Carmelo Anthony) was there and the history that the Knicks have and a historical franchise it is, I thought it was something I could definitely be a part of," said Davis.

Ian Begley of SNY reported that Davis would have considered signing a long-term deal with the Knicks, though the team did not want to trade the necessary assets to acquire Davis.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst added that Knicks brass felt like trading for Davis would have undercut their long-term plan. 

Davis is averaging 27.4 points and 9.3 rebounds on the season. 

The New York Knicks have hired David Blatt as a basketball operations consultant.

Blatt has a long friendship with Steve Mills dating back to their time together at Princeton.

Blatt previously worked in the NBA as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are one of several teams with interest in trading for Dennis Smith Jr. of the New York Knicks.

Smith was acquired by the Knickers part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade. Smith is competing for minutes at point guard with Elfird Payton and Frank Ntilikina.

The New York Knicks are believed to be open to trading Julius Randle, according to a source.

The Knicks signed Randle to a three-year, $63 million contract in the offseason.

With the exception of Randle, the Knicks largely signed players to one-year deals to preserve their cap flexibility. 

Jeff Van Gundy, Mark Jackson and Tom Thibodeau are on the short list of potential in-season head coaching candidates for the New York Knicks if they decide to make another move.

The Knicks elevated Mike Miller on an interim basis and they informed him they would have an open mind about keeping the job long-term.

The Knicks are looking for a head coach on a long-term basis who has the stature and ability to succeed in that market.

Several members within the New York Knicks expect Steve Mills to be replaced as team president at the end of the season, if not sooner, sources told Ian Begley of SNY.

Begley adds that there remains a chance that Mills stays with the team if they can turn around their season.

If Mills is let go during the season, then general manager Scott Perry will take over his job for the rest of the year.

Executives see the Knicks as an attractive destination due to their market, salary cap flexibility, and draft picks. 

David Fizdale turned down several offers from other NBA teams without having an assurance the New York Knicks would hire him, which was an indicator of how badly he wanted the job.

The Atlanta Hawks and Phoenix Suns offered Fizdale their head coaching jobs, while he also could have become head coach of the Charlotte Hornets.

Fizdale ultimately signed a four-year, $22 million deal with the Knicks.

Fizdale's first order of business was to establish a relationship with Kristaps Porzingis, but he never coached him. Porzingis was traded at the 2019 deadline and Porzingis was fired less than 12 months later.
