Battie In Car Accident

Oct 28, 2005 1:33 PM

An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Battie was ticketed for speeding.

Orlando Magic center-forward Tony Battie sustained minor bruises and cuts after the car he was driving ran off the road and hit a pole Thursday night in Orlando.

Battie, 28, told the team that a tire blew out on his vehicle, causing him to lose control.

A Magic spokesperson said alcohol was not involved in Battie's accident.

Battie did not attend Friday's tip-off luncheon and was expected to be able to practice Saturday after seeing trainer Teddy Arzonico.

Magic's Hill Likely Out 3-6 Weeks

Oct 27, 2005 1:30 PM

Orlando Magic forward Grant Hill will have surgery to repair a painful lower abdominal injury and miss 3 to 6 weeks of basketball and the start of the NBA regular season.

Hill injured himself at the start of the exhibition season, and re-aggravated the injury on the first play of the game vs Maccabi. He hasn't played since. Hill said the pain is located around the pubis bone below the lower abdomen.

Magic Send Hill's Exam To Specialist

Oct 22, 2005 5:28 PM

The Orlando Magic have sent Grant Hill's medical exam to a specialist in California to determine whether Hill tore a muscle above the pubis bone, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Hill underwent magnetic resonance imaging Thursday for what the club first characterized as an abdominal strain.

"It's going to be a few days before we know anything for sure," Magic Assistant General Manager Otis Smith told the paper.

While Magic officials couldn't speculate on how long Hill could be out, it could be for a while if he has torn a muscle or tissue near the groin area.

Coach Brian Hill did use the phrase " ... If Grant is out for an extended period" after the Magic's practice Friday at RDV Sportsplex, the paper reported.

Grant Hill said he felt twinges before Wednesday night's game and later regretted his decision to play.

"It was sore. ... Bugged me a little bit. It got pretty sore in that game," he told the Sentinal. "It feels better -- that's a good thing. We'll just see what everybody says."

Hurricane Wilma May Affect Hawks-Magic Game

Oct 20, 2005 11:03 PM

With Hurricane Wilma wreaking havoc on the college and professional sports schedule in Florida this weekend, the Hawks find themselves in weather-related limbo for Saturday night's game against the Magic in Orlando.

The Hawks are still scheduled to leave Friday afternoon for Orlando. But Saturday's 7 p.m. game time could be moved up if necessary, at the discretion of the Magic, Hawks spokesman Arthur Triche said.

Instead of staying in Orlando for practice Sunday before leaving for Nashville, and Monday night's game against Miami, the Hawks will depart Orlando after Saturday night's game and return to Atlanta.

Hawks coach Mike Woodson said his main concern is the safety of his players and coaches.

"We don't want to be in the middle of a hurricane zone," he said Thursday before the Hawks' annual golf tournament at White Columns Golf Club in Alpharetta. "It's not up to us but we don't want to be anywhere near that kind of severe weather."

Grant Hill Lost To Abdominal Strain

Oct 20, 2005 11:46 AM

While the Magic had Steve Francis, DeShawn Stevenson and Kelvin Cato back in uniform Wednesday night for their 93-79 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv at the TD Waterhouse Centre, they played without Keyon Dooling and lost Grant Hill to an abdominal strain. Coach Brian Hill said Grant Hill's injury came on the first play of the game, although the veteran forward scored 10 points in the first quarter before leaving.

"It would be nice to get everybody healthy so we could close out this exhibition season with a little bit of rhythm and continuity," Brian Hill said.

Lopez's Diary Comments Have Magic Coach Upset

Oct 20, 2005 11:43 AM

Head coach Brian Hill of the Orlando Magic was surprised to hear that guard Felipe Lopez vented recently in an online diary that he wasn't given a fair shot to make the team in training camp.

Lopez was waived by the Magic a week ago after playing just one preseason game. Out of the NBA last season after having knee surgery, Lopez was trying to make the Magic as a backup shooting guard. Lopez wrote on HoopsHype.com that he regretted attending the Magic's camp.

"I think I was never given a fair shot," Lopez wrote. "The coaching staff barely gave me the opportunity to show what I could do. How can you evaluate how much a player can help your team if you don't give him a chance?

"To be honest, it seems like the decision to release me was taken way in advance. When they informed me about it, they told me a big man was what they were looking for. Had I known that before, I would have not come to training camp with the Magic. . . . I think they should have shown more respect to Felipe Lopez the person. I feel like I have been used."

Hill, who was Lopez's first NBA coach in Vancouver, was shocked to hear Lopez's bitterness.

"I think we were the only team that invited him to training camp," Hill said. "I feel bad that he feels that way. But based on what we saw, we weren't going to be able to get him on the floor."

DeVos Transferring Ownership Of Magic

Oct 20, 2005 11:37 AM

Rich DeVos attended Wednesday night's preseason game and acknowledged that his days as majority owner of the Orlando Magic are ending.

DeVos confirmed to the Orlando Sentinel that ownership of the team will be transferred to his children and that Bob Vander Weide, his son-in-law and team president, will represent the Magic as their owner.

The family wanted the paperwork on the transfer to be completed this month, but it likely will take until the end of the year.

"We have to start preparing for the next stage in life," DeVos said before the Magic beat Maccabi Tel Aviv 93-79 at TD Waterhouse Centre.

Club sources indicate that DeVos will still have about a 30 percent stake in the team. The second generation -- sons Dick, Doug and Dan and daughter, Cheri -- will have the controlling interest.
