Grizzlies Pick Up Options On Gay, Lowry And Warrick

Oct 25, 2007 5:18 PM

The Memphis Grizzlies Thursday announced that they have picked up the team options for the 2008-09 season for forward Rudy Gay, guard Kyle Lowry and forward Hakim Warrick.

"We are pleased to pick up the options on these three outstanding young men.  Rudy, Kyle and Hakim have all shown in the brief period of time that they have been here in Memphis the talent necessary to become significant NBA players,? said Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace.  ?They have also shown a willingness to interact with our fans and assist the Grizzlies' charitable endeavors.  Our team is fortunate to have this trio."

Gay leads the Grizzlies in scoring (17.0, T-17th in NBA), steals (1.57) and minutes played (31.1, 9th) in seven preseason contests. The 6-9, 220-pound forward was named to the NBA?s All-Rookie First Team last season and finished third in NBA Rookie of the Year voting after averaging 10.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in 78 games in 2006-07.

Gasol Out 5 To 7 Days After Hurting Ankle

Oct 19, 2007 8:34 AM

Pau Gasol wasn't running with his teammates Thursday afternoon, and that will be the trend for at least the next 5-7 days.

The Grizzlies' 7-footer will definitely miss the team's next two exhibition games with a moderately sprained left ankle. X-rays were negative, but coach Marc Iavaroni made it clear that rushing Gasol's return to the court is not an option.

"We're going to make sure he gets plenty of opportunity to get healthy," Iavaroni said, as the Griz prepared to play host to the Miami Heat for a preseason game Saturday at FedExForum.

He has used a therapeutic walking boot since suffering the injury Wednesday night during a loss at Indiana. Gasol crashed to the floor after attempting a layup with 9:36 left in the first quarter.

Grizzles Lose Gasol To Injury Against Pacers

Oct 18, 2007 8:29 AM

When he came down and landed on Danny Granger's foot, Grizzles' forward Pau Gasol immediately knew his left ankle was sprained.

Gasol was hoping it was one of those injuries where after a couple of trips down the floor, the pain would disappear. But after running up and down the Conseco Fieldhouse floor, Gasol felt his ankle start to blow up. So with 7:22 left in the opening quarter against Indiana Wednesday night, Gasol headed to the locker room, his night finished after playing just four minutes, 38 seconds.

He will undergo tests Thursday to determine the extent of the injury.

Tentative Settlement Reached In Stoudamire Pot Case

Oct 11, 2007 8:06 PM

Lawyers for NBA player Damon Stoudamire and Pima County have reached an agreement to resolve his long-standing marijuana possession case.

Stoudamire, a former University of Arizona star who now plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, has been fighting misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia since July 2003.

He was arrested after a foil packet containing a half-ounce of marijuana allegedly fell from his pants while he was going through security at Tucson's airport.

Deputy Pima County Attorney Bruce Chalk said the case will be dismissed if Stoudamire provides proof of two more drug-free urine tests over the next six months, avoids any criminal convictions and reports any subsequent arrests immediately.

Stoudamire already has completed a drug treatment program and has volunteered to give $45,000 in scholarships for needy or at-risk children for basketball camps run by University of Arizona coaches Lute Olson and Joan Bonvicini.

The judge would rule on Stoudamire's guilt or innocence if the conditions are not met, Chalk said. He could face up to a $2,500 fine and three years' probation if he doesn't meet the terms.

Stern Not Sold On Europe Trip

Oct 11, 2007 9:31 AM

NBA commissioner David Stern isn?t so sure about the new concept that had the Celtics, Minnesota, Toronto and Memphis hold their training camps in Europe.

?I?m not sure that they?re all that I wanted them to be, because it?s hard to move them and then to make sure that the teams have the opportunity to really train,? he said. ?Because that?s what they?re doing, they?re preparing.

?So I had this great idea. I take full responsibility for it. I?m not sure it?s the best idea I ever had. The more important thing is the games. To bring teams over and then to have them cloistered might seem anti-social, but I understand it because it?s very important for teams that are new and together to bond and also to practice.?
