Anthony Parker scored 19 points, and Jose Calderon added 13 points and 10 assists to help the Raptors beat the Grizzlies 103-91 on Wednesday night.

Chris Bosh limped off in the second with a strained right groin. It didn't matter as Memphis was outscored by 20 points in the quarter, and the Raptors ran away from the lifeless Grizzlies.

Elson Wears Mask After Elbow Shot

Nov 24, 2007 5:13 AM

Spurs' center Francisco Elson had played three-plus games without his protective facemask, but a forearm to the face from Memphis Grizzlies' forward Rudy Gay prompted him to don the custom-fitted clear plastic device for the second half of the Spurs' game on Saturday night at the AT&T Center.

The mask was fashioned for Elson late this summer after he fractured the orbital bone around his left eye while playing for the Dutch national team in a tournament that preceded the FIBA European championships.

Elson had complained the mask gave him double vision as he looked upward for rebounds and occasionally bothered him when he could not keep sweat out of his eyes. He stopped wearing it three games ago and had not had any problems before Friday.

Gay nailed Elson with the forearm as the Spurs' center scored on a layin with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter. He converted the three-point play after Gay was whistled for a foul and remained in the game for the first 5:03 of the second quarter.

"I dunked it, and he popped me," Elson said, "so it was kind of sore and swollen. But it's fine now."

Swollen Thumb To Keep Milicic Out

Nov 19, 2007 5:12 PM

Darko Milicic did not dress Saturday night for the Grizzlies' game against the Dallas Mavericks, and the severely sprained thumb could keep him out several games. The 7-footer will undergo more tests Monday to determine the severity of the injury.

X-rays taken Friday were negative.

Milicic suffered the injury early in the second half of the team's home loss Friday to New Orleans. He left the court and returned to the locker room two minutes into the third quarter.

The thumb remained swollen Saturday night.

"It's going to be kind of a wait-and-see thing," Griz Coach Marc Iavaroni said. "It definitely hurts us inside."

Bulls Forgetting Bryant, Focusing On Gasol?

Nov 18, 2007 2:37 AM

Kobe Bryant will play against the team who he wants to join tonight, when the Bulls meet the Lakers at the Staples Center.

However, according to Mark Heisler of the Los Angeles Times, General Manager John Paxson is now reportedly focusing on lower-key players like Memphis' Pau Gasol in deals that won't make headlines for a week.

Paxson did talk to the Lakers about Bryant, but, according o Heisler, those talks were just exploratory and quickly spiraled out of control.

Happy with his uncomplicated, up-and-coming young team, Paxson just wanted to know if the Lakers were holding a fire sale like Minnesota's for Kevin Garnett.

Hornets' West Drops Career-High 40 In Win

Nov 17, 2007 4:38 AM

New Orleans' forward David West was pleased with his career-high 40 points but prouder that the Hornets fought through overtime to record the best start in franchise history.

"I am more happy with the fact that we were able to gut this one out,'' West said after his 15-footer with 8.3 seconds left in the extra period gave the Hornets a 120-118 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night.

"They closed in on us down the stretch hitting some big 3s, and we were able to muster a good five minutes to close them out.''

Grizzlies Clamp Down On Durant, Make Sonics 0-5

Nov 8, 2007 6:21 AM

Rudy Gay warmed from a cold start to score 25 points, and determined Kyle Lowry hit a clinching 3-pointer as the Memphis Grizzlies overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half Wednesday night to beat the winless Sonics 105-98, sending Seattle to its worst start in 38 years.

"I hate to lose, basically. I don't care if it's an 82-game season and people say you have to lose -- I hate to lose. Period," rookie Kevin Durant said, in a quiet voice that matched the locker room vibe.

Conley Staying Prepared Despite No Playing Time

Nov 4, 2007 10:18 AM

The only sounds heard inside the empty FedEx Forum was a single basketball bouncing and Memphis Grizzlies' Coach Marc Iavaroni's voice giving tips on how to run the pick-and-roll offense Saturday morning.

On the receiving end of Iavaroni's voice was former Lawrence North High School standout Mike Conley.

Conley, who was still on the court nearly 45 minutes after his teammates had departed from their morning shootaround, is getting the majority of his work before, during and after practice because playing time has been sparse for the No. 4 pick in the summer's draft.

"This is where I'm getting all my work in," Conley said. "Of course I would love to be out there, but it's something right now that this team is in a good position. . . . I'm fine with the guys that are playing ahead of me. I'm trying to learn as much as I can while I'm on the bench."
