Grunfeld Confirms Pecherov's Status

Sep 26, 2006 5:20 PM

Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld confirmed to members of the media that Wizards 2006 first round pick Oleksiy Pecherov will play next season in Europe.

Grunfeld, who along with Head Coach Eddie Jordan, met with the media on Tuesday, stated that "for now he's staying in (Europe)".

"I don't feel it's good for any young player, if it can be avoided, to just sit on the bench without playing," said Grunfeld. "The only way young players get better is by being out on the court, playing in real game type situations."

"The games they play over there are in front of a lot of people," Grunfeld added. "They're pressure-packed type of games where you have big plays and big shots. The players are physical and every game means something. That's much more important than just working on fundamentals every single day, without the banging and real game type of experience."

Pecherov Seems Likely To Play In Europe

The Washington Wizards have less than two weeks before they open training camp in Richmond, and while they have yet to make an official decision regarding first-round pick Oleksiy Pecherov , it is becoming more likely that the 7-footer will remain overseas for the upcoming season.

Wizards President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld said yesterday that the team is "debating the best thing to do" in regards to Pecherov, who averaged 12.6 points and 7.6 rebounds while shooting 46.2 percent in five games with the Wizards' summer league team in Las Vegas in July.

Pecherov remains under contract to his team in Ukraine but holds a buyout clause.
