Wizards Owner Expects Hard Cap

Sep 29, 2010 7:21 PM

Washington Wizards majority owner Ted Leonsis indicated on Wednesday that he expects the NBA to implement a hard salary cap.

David Stern cautioned that it is not necessarily true and suggested Leonsis will receive punishment from the league office.

"We're negotiating and that was one of our negotiating points," Stern told The Associated Press, "but collective bargaining is a negotiating process, and that was not something that Ted was authorized to say and he will be dealt with for that lapse in judgment."

In a press release to RealGM and other news outlets, the NBA announced that they have issued a $100,000 fine to Leonsis for his comments.

Saunders Gives Team iPads For Scouting Videos, Playbook

Sep 29, 2010 10:57 AM

Flip Saunders is providing iPads to his Wizards players, which will give him the potential to send his players more scouting videos and his entire 250-page playbook. The iPads run at about $500 each, but Saunders said it was worth the investment.

"It's not a matter of expense, it's a matter of being a great learning tool," Saunders said. "There are a lot of things you are able to do with it, with the video playbook, the edits that you can do. We don't have to give out the playbook. Last year, our playbook was so big, it cost $175 to print them up. So, I think it's very useful for them. We're able to now, send them video, from edits, and they can watch it from their rooms. So we can do a lot more things with it."

Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has signed forward/center Andray Blatche to a contract extension and has exercised its fourth-year option on center JaVale McGee.  Per team policy, terms of the contracts were not released.

?Andray and JaVale are two pieces that we feel can solidify our frontcourt for years to come and extending their contracts certainly fits in with our long-term plan of rebuilding this team with a core of young, talented players,? said Grunfeld.  ?Both players performed very well over the second half of last season and we?re confident that they will continue to develop and build on the potential and promise that they have shown throughout the beginning stages of their careers.?

Stern Asks Arenas, Wizards Not To Speak About Gun Incident

Sep 23, 2010 12:11 PM

David Stern spoke with Gilbert Arenas on Wednesday, expressing his excitement with the former All-Star guard's return from a suspension. He also encouraged Arenas and the Wizards not to speak publicly about last season's gun incident.

Stern later called Wizards owner Ted Leonsis to inform him public comments from the organization about the situation are also off limits. Stern wants Arenas and the Wizards to put it all behind them.

"It's time to move on, rather than obsess about the past," Stern said in a telephone interview on Wednesday. "It's just that it's been discussed, and discussed, and discussed. It's been written about, and written about, and written about on each occasion - his release, his sentencing, my ruling or what have you - and at some point, it's time to move on. I think he's entitled to do that. And I'm supportive of him. We're lucky he's well and we like the way he's worked with various groups over the summer. And we think it's time. Millions and millions of dollars later, and a new season later, I think it's time to move on. And that's what I told him."
