Knicks, Nets To Co-Host 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend

Sep 24, 2013 7:20 PM

The Knicks and Nets will co-host the 2015 NBA All-Star Weekend in New York, according to sources.

The official announcement is expected to come at a news conference scheduled for Wednesday.

The All-Star Game itself will be played Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, at the newly-renovated Madison Square Garden. The Saturday night festivities including the Slam Dunk Contest and the Three-Point Shootout will take place at new Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

It is not the first time All-Star Weekend has been played at split venues. In 2010, the American Airlines Center hosted All-Star Saturday while the game was played the next night at Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Kidd Expects Nets To Go To Joe Johnson In Final Shot Situations

Sep 24, 2013 3:34 PM

Even with Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett aboard, Jason Kidd points to Joe Johnson as the player the Brooklyn Nets will give the ball to in late-game situations.

Johnson went nine for 10 in clutch moments last season (when the game was within three points with 24 seconds or less).

“If you’re into analytics, you look at Joe Johnson as the clear cut as the guy taking the last-second shot,” Kidd said. “He was 9-for-10 with 24 seconds or less. So that would be your guy who is the closer.

“But the game of basketball is such that you draw up a play for one player, most of the time it doesn’t end up with that one guy taking the shot. He creates a problem, which results to one of teammates getting a wide-open look. Make-or-miss, it’s the right basketball play. For us, it’s about making the right basketball play at the end. But if you’re looking at stats, which a lot of you people do, Joe Johnson’s name comes first. … He’s a guy who delivers. He loves that stage at the end of having the ball and making the right play.”

NBA Considering Nickname Jerseys For Heat, Nets

Sep 23, 2013 9:55 PM

Some members of the Miami Heat organization have been told the NBA is considering allowing them and the Brooklyn Nets to wear jerseys with nicknames in at least one of the teams' four matchups next season.

The NBA has not announced the plan, but teams apparently have been aware of the likelihood of it happening for at least several weeks. Players were asked to submit which names they would like on these potential jerseys.

"It shows growth in our league and it shows we do adapt to what's going on around us," said Allen, the Heat guard who plans to wear Shuttlesworth on his jersey, a nod to his character from the "He Got Game" film. "And we're still kids, playing a kids' game. Even though we're now men playing a kids' game, we still remember where we come from. Everybody had a nickname and it's a way to let the fans in a little bit more."

Four-time NBA MVP LeBron James is expected to wear "King James." Heat guard Dwyane Wade would have any number of nicknames to choose from, with "Three" — both his jersey number and championship-ring total — being his current favorite. Shane Battier said he'll go with "Shaneo."

Brooklyn forward Paul Pierce has been called "The Truth" for many years, and fellow new Nets forward Kevin Garnett has long been known by his initials.

"Fans will like it and so will a lot of the players," Allen said. "Guys will get a good kick out of it."

"It's great, it's back to 100 percent," Lopez said. "I'm out there doing everything."

Lopez is coming off of a career year for the Brooklyn Nets in 2012-13, averaging 19.4 points and 6.9 rebounds.

"We just want to win, that's the bottom line," he said of the Nets.

Sources: Nets Cleared In NBA's Probe Of Kirilenko Signing

Sep 16, 2013 3:52 PM

The NBA investigated the Brooklyn Nets for their signing of Andrei Kirilenko and cleared the organization in a "thorough" probe, according to sources.

Kirilenko, who made roughly $10 million in Minnesota last season, opted out of the final year of his Timberwolves’ deal and took the Nets’ $3.1 mini-midlevel exception. In doing so, he triggered a wave of anger and suspicion.

The league launched its investigation, questioning participants. Nets officials were summoned — at one point on a weekend, usually a time off in the summer for league execs.

“It was a very, very thorough investigation,” one source said. “They checked everything.”

Jason Kidd Will Have Nets Jersey Retired Oct. 17

Sep 9, 2013 3:46 PM

The Brooklyn Nets will retire the No. 5 jersey of Jason Kidd on Oct. 17 against the Miami Heat.

“This is a very humbling honor and one that I will always cherish," Kidd said in a statement. "There can be no greater recognition of an athlete's time with any team than to have his number retired, and this gesture by the Nets organization validates a very significant portion of my career that was spent as a player with this franchise."

Kidd becomes the sixth player in franchise history have his number raised to the rafters, joining Drazen Petrovic (#3), John Williamson (#23), Bill Melchionni (#25), Julius Erving (#32) and Charles ‘Buck’ Williams (#52), who was the most recent honoree in April, 1999.

Kidd, who captained the Nets to two consecutive NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003, played in 506 games over six and a half seasons for New Jersey, averaging 14.6 points, 9.1 assists and 7.2 rebounds per game.

With the Nets, Kidd was selected to five All-Star teams and led the team to six consecutive playoff appearances.

Havlicek: Pierce Greatest One-On-One Player In Celtics' History

Sep 9, 2013 12:27 PM

John Havlicek was disappointed that Paul Pierce was unable to spend his entire career with the Boston Celtics, a rare accomplishment in the current NBA era.

Havlicek gave Pierce high praise in regards to his place amongst Celtics' greats.

"It's a lot different today but I wish him well," said Havlicek. "He's one of the best all-around players and the thing I marveled at was his one-on-one ability. I think he's the best one-on-one player of all Celtics."

Oscar Schmidt Believes He'd Be 'One Of The Best 10 Ever' If He Joined NBA

Sep 7, 2013 9:21 PM

Oscar Schmidt played overseas as a Brazilian star, despite overtures three consecutive years from the then-New Jersey Nets to leave his professional team -- and the national team -- to play in the NBA in the 1970s and 80s.

Schmidt will be inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday, and he says he would have been one of the best players in NBA history had he entered the league.

“Yes,” Schmidt said. “Anytime. It was easier, because in the NBA at that time it was one-on-one, always. One-on-one, I’m free. If it comes to two players guarding me, maybe.

“I would be one of the best 10 ever.

“There was not a price [the Nets could have offered]. There was national team. That’s it. The national team doesn’t have a price. It’s proud. It’s what you live for. And today, people don’t like to play for the national team. That’s very sad for me.”

Schmidt was asked what he would have averaged in the NBA and said, “One point a minute. Twenty minutes, 20 points. Forty minutes, maybe 60.”

Joe Prunty Aiming To Be NBA Head Coach

Sep 4, 2013 9:12 PM

Joe Prunty has taken the reigns as the head coach of the Great Britain national team and will serve as an assistant under Jason Kidd on the Brooklyn Nets next season.

Prunty is aiming to be a head coach at some point in the NBA.

"If you're asking me would I like to do it, the answer is yes," Prunty said.

"But I'll take care of the things that will prepare me to be in that position. Which is this."
