Steve Nash Says He Plans To Play Kevin Durant In 'All Five Positions'

Sep 19, 2020 1:34 PM

Steven Nash spoke of his plans to use Kevin Durant's positional versatility on JJ Reddick's The Old Man and the Three podcast (h/t Coby Green of SNY).

“Kevin, with his length, is a matchup problem for everyone. Kevin can play all five positions, and I plan to use him in all five positions," said Nash of Durant.

Nash has previously worked with Durant as a consultant for the Warriors.

Nash also plans to use Kyrie Irving off the ball, adding that he looks forward to getting to know the point guard.

“Ky is a weapon off the ball. ... He’s one of my favorite players. He’s kind of a savant with the basketball," said Nash.

Irving averaged 27.4 points and 6.4 assists in his first season with the Nets.

Kevin Durant: Caris LeVert Can 'For Sure' Be Nets' Third Star

Sep 15, 2020 1:48 AM

Kevin Durant recently praised Caris LeVert, saying that the 26-year-old wing player could compliment himself and Kyrie Irving as the third star of the Brooklyn Nets.

“I think Caris is that perfect guy for us to, any given night he can lead us in scoring or lead us in assists or he can control the offense or we can go to him in the post in a matchup.

"I feel like he has the tools to do everything on the basketball court. On our team, we play unselfishly, and we’ve got guys that can play off the basketball so on any given night anybody can be the star," said Durant on The Old Man and the Three podcast (h/t Ian Begley of SNY).

Durant added that LeVert could “for sure” be the team's third star.

LeVert averaged 18.7 points and 4.2 rebounds last season.

Kyrie Irving Continues To Mentor Jayson Tatum

Sep 4, 2020 11:23 AM

Jayson Tatum first began to bond with Kyrie Irving during his predaft process in 2017 and then spent two seasons as his teammate with the Boston Celtics. As Irving left the Celtics to sign with the Brooklyn Nets, he had a message for Tatum.

“Ky told me this is my time and to embrace that role and be that dude,” Tatum said.

Irving still keeps in touch with Tatum.

“Ky is like my big brother,” Tatum tells The Athletic. “We still talk to this day, and we’ve talked a few times this playoffs. He always encourages me to be special. Having that relationship with him and having somebody like him in my ear at a young age, it means a lot.

“You can steal from a lot of different guys — Ky, Kobe (Bryant) — but you have to do it your own way. I’m one of the youngest guys on this team but I know the role I have. I know how these guys view me and they value what I have to say. I want the best for everybody and I just want to win. I’ve been more outspoken this year.”

With the Brooklyn Nets hiring Steve Nash as head coach, they will retain Jacque Vaughn as the team's lead assistant.

Vaughn will also become the NBA's highest paid assistant coach.

Vaughn finished the 19-20 season as interim head coach of the Nets.

The Nets likely would have hired Vaughn as head coach had they been unable to convince Nash of taking the job.

Nets Hire Steve Nash As Head Coach

Sep 3, 2020 3:32 PM

The Brooklyn Nets have hired Steve Nash as their next head coach on a four-year contract.

Nash has worked as a consultant for the Golden State Warriors since his retirement from the NBA while also serving as an analyst for TNT's soccer coverage. Nash developed a close bond with Kevin Durant during their time together with the Warriors. Nash, however, has no prior coaching experience. Mark Jackson, Jason Kidd and Derek Fisher all were hired without prior coaching experience in recent seasons.

Joe Tsai and Sean Marks have been aggressive in recruiting Nash over the past few weeks.

“I am honored to have this opportunity with such a first-class organization and would like to thank Sean, Joe and his wife, Clara, for having faith in my ability to lead this team forward,” said Nash. “Coaching is something I knew I wanted to pursue when the time was right, and I am humbled to be able to work with the outstanding group of players and staff we have here in Brooklyn. I am as excited about the prospects of the team on the court as I am about moving to Brooklyn with my family and becoming impactful members of this community.”
