Pelicans May Not Be Able To Afford To Hire Tyronn Lue

Aug 25, 2020 5:37 PM

Tyronn Lue would like to be a head coach in the NBA again and there are at least three prominent openings in which he's been linked as a candidate in the Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans and Brooklyn Nets.

Sources tell The Athletic that Lue could also be a candidate for the Houston Rockets should they move on from Mike D'Antoni.

Lue was looking for five years at $7 million per year from the Los Angeles Lakers, a deal commensurate with having won a title, but the closest they’d get was three years and $20 million.

League sources say the Pelicans are likely to cap their budget for a head coach at $5.5 million per season.

Gregg Popovich Reportedly Linked To Nets' Head Coaching Vacancy

Aug 24, 2020 9:12 AM

The Brooklyn Nets will begin their head coaching search now that they've been eliminated from the 2020 playoffs.

Sources tell ESPN's Jackie MacMullan that Sean Marks is seriously considering Jacque Vaughn for the job on a permanent basis.

Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, however, are interested in a higher profile head coach such as Tyronn Lue or Gregg Popovich, according to sources. MacMullan indicates that both Lue and Popovich are among the candidates who have been linked to the opening.

Marks has a prior working relationship with Popovich from their time together with the San Antonio Spurs. Popovich has been with the Spurs since 1994 first as general manager and then as head coach. Popovich suggested he would continue coaching in the 20-21 season following San Antonio's elimination from playoff contention in Orlando.

Shams Charania of The Athletic also reported that the Nets will pursue Popovich, though the possibility is considered "a pipe dream for now." Brooklyn would need permission to speak to Popovich and likely provide compensation.

Sources also tell Charania that Popovich is a favorite of Kevin Durant, even dating back to Oklahoma City's coaching search in 2015.

Kyrie Irving Offering Encouragement To Caris LeVert

Aug 18, 2020 10:18 AM

While the Brooklyn Nets have been rumored to be pursuing a third star via trade with Caris LeVert the player considered most likely to be dealt in such a trade, Kyrie Irving has been in touch with him during the restart.

“I talked to Ky [on Friday] morning, talked about the games and playoffs coming up and giving me encouragement,’’ LeVert said on a Zoom call Saturday. “He’s watching all the games. He’s been in this position before, fighting for something.’’

Without Irving, Kevin Durant and Spencer Dinwiddie, the Nets have been reliant on LeVert, Joe Harris and Jarrett Allen.

Ty Lue Considered Candidate For Nets, Pelicans, 76ers, Rockets

Aug 15, 2020 4:12 PM

Ty Lue has emerged as a candidate for head coaching positions with the Brooklyn Nets, New Orleans Pelicans, Philadelphia 76ers and Houston Rockets. The 76ers and Rockets have yet to make a decision on their head coaches for the 20-21 season, while the Nets will consider retaining Jacque Vaughn.

Lue turned down an offer to become head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers last offseason as he was only offered a three-year deal.

Lue instead agreed to become assistant coach of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Lue could bring Chauncey Billups as an associate head coach.

Nets Consider Re-Signing Joe Harris 'Priority Number One'

Aug 13, 2020 11:34 PM

The Brooklyn Nets will prioritize re-signing Joe Harris this offseason even as many have speculated that acquiring a third star will be the most important order of business to the front office.

“Priority number one,” Sean Marks said. “It’s that simple, yeah.”

Harris has become one of the NBA's best three-point shooters.

Harris signed a two-year, $16 million deal in 2018 and could double his salary in free agency. The Nets could go over the cap to re-sign Harris.
