Kawhi Leonard Expected To Defend Luka Doncic More Frequently In Game 2

May 24, 2021 10:32 AM

Ty Lue hinted that the Los Angeles Clippers may switch Kawhi Leonard onto Luka Doncic in Game 2.

“He has to carry a lot of the load offensively, and we have three or four guys that we can put on [Doncic] and mix it up,” Lue said Sunday. “But, I think you’ll get what you’re asking for come Tuesday.”

Doncic was most often defended by Nicolas Batum. When Leonard defended Doncic, he didn't attempt a field goal or a free throw.

Lue said the bigger issue for the Clippers was their communication on defense.

“I’m too embarrassed to say what the number was with points we gave up on our miscommunication and not following the game plan,” he said.

Rick Carlisle On Luka Doncic: 'This Is His Time Of The Year'

May 23, 2021 1:17 AM

The Dallas Mavericks beat the Los Angeles Clippers 113-103 in Game 1 at the Staples Center.

Luka Doncic finished with 31 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists in the game, marking his third triple-double in seven playoff games.

"This is his time of year. He's one of the smartest basketball players you will ever meet at any age at any level," said Rick Carlisle after the game.

Doncic averaged 1.43 points per play on pick and rolls where he was the main ballhandler and Ivica Zubac guarding the screener. Doncic scored 15 points with Zubac the closest defender, according to ESPN.

Doncic said his play was a matter of reading the defense.

"When they don't double, attack it. When they double, there's someone who's going to be open. I've just got to read the game," said Doncic.

Dorian Finney-Smith also talked about the importance of recognizing the double-teams.

"When Luka gets going, I just try to stay ready, because I know they're about to start trapping," said Finney-Smith, who scored 18 points. "That's when he gets to finding people, slinging the ball across the court, finding guys when we're open. I just know they're going to send two guys at Luka. You've just got to be ready to shoot."

Lauri Markkanen 'Privately' Prefers To Play For Mavs Next Season

May 22, 2021 4:19 PM

Lauri Markkanen reportedly wants to play for the Dallas Mavericks next season, sources told Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times.

"The one place he privately wants to land is with the Mavericks, joining guard Luka Doncic and big man Kristaps Porzingis. The Mavericks will have serious cap room this offseason and were in the middle of the pack in three-point shooting, but Markkanen and Porzingis might be too similar in terms of their skills for that to happen," writes Cowley.

Markkanen will be a restricted free agent this summer.

Markkanen averaged 13.6 points and 5.3 rebounds this season, both career lows.

Porzingis Doesn't Know What Cuban Is Talking About Concerning Doncic 'Dust-Ups'

May 11, 2021 9:46 AM

Kristaps Porzingis disputed a recent assertion from Mark Cuban that he and Luka Doncic may have issues off the court.

"I've never had any problems with my teammates off the court," said Porzingis. "I've always gotten along very well with them. I don't know what Cuban was talking about. I try to be as professional as possible, do what I have to do and be a soldier for the team."

Cuban referred to "dust-ups" between Porzingis and Doncic in an interview last month. Cuban compared the relationship to Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry.

"On the court they are fine,'' Cuban said in a 105.3 The Fan visit on "K&C Masterpiece.'' "That's not to say their aren't dust-ups, because there are. I'd compare it to Jet and Dirk.

“(Nowitzki and Terry) weren’t best friends at the beginning, but they grew to like each other and grew to be great friends and that’s just part of the process when you’ve got young kids who are growing up," Cuban said. “It took forever before Dirk and Jet did anything off the court together. A long time.''

Kristaps Porzingis Could Return To Mavs Lineup On Wednesday

May 11, 2021 1:30 AM

Kristaps Porzingis will be held out of Tuesday's game against the Memphis Grizzlies, but could return on Wednesday against the New Orleans Pelicans, according to Rick Carlisle.

Porzingis has been out due to right knee soreness.

“KP is going to be out tomorrow, but we would like to have him ready to play against New Orleans. [We] just feel that the extra day, particularly with the practice today, is very helpful for him. But again, that’s all subject to how he’s feeling and those kinds of things," said Carlisle on Monday.

Porzingis, who has missed 28 games so far this season, last played on April 29.

Carlisle added that it was important for Porzingis to see game minutes before the playoffs.

Rick Carlisle Expects Kristaps Porzingis To Return In Regular Season 'At Some Point'

May 7, 2021 1:20 AM

Rick Carlisle said that Kristaps Porzingis will return for the regular season "at some point," though he said Porzingis was doubtful for Friday's game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Porzingis has been out since April 29 due to knee soreness, and has missed 26 games this season.

Carlisle added that it was important for Porzingis to re-establish his chemistry with the team.

“When he is ready to come back and play in NBA games, we need him back on the floor. Yeah, he’s obviously one of our top players, and the sooner we can get him back on the floor, the sooner he can re-establish conditioning, rhythm, chemistry with teammates, those kinds of things."
