Flip Waiting For Call From New York

Apr 25, 2005 1:38 PM

Former Timberwolves head coach Flip Saunders is still waiting for a call from Isiah Thomas and the Knicks regarding their head coaching vacancy.

Thomas has turned the majority of his attention to Phil Jackson, thus ignoring Saunders, who is at the top of many team's wish list.

The Blazers and Cavaliers are two teams that will likely speak to Saunders.

Nuggets Win Despite Miles' 47 Points

Apr 20, 2005 5:39 AM

The Nuggets completed the regular season with an improbable 49 wins by beating the Portland Trailblazers by a final score of 119-115.

Carmelo Anthony scored 36 points to go along with his 13 rebounds.

``It all starts now, the playoffs,'' Anthony said.

The Blazers' Darius Miles scored a career-high 47 points.

``My teammates were getting me the ball,'' Miles said. ``I didn't even look at the scoreboard until I had 44. I didn't know how many points I had at the half, and guys were saying I could score 50. I thought, I'm not going to score 30 more points. I thought I had like, 20.''

Allen Puts Flip Saunders At The Top Of His List

Apr 18, 2005 2:13 PM

Blazers' owner Paul Allen is reportedly looking for a coach with a lot of experience and a reputation for being a teacher of the game of basketbal.

One name that comes to mind is Flip Saunders, who was interviewed for the Blazers' post several years ago.

"You have to have somebody who'll be teaching and bringing those guys along and developing, someone who has a record of being able to do that," Allen said. "Flip Saunders, if he becomes available. I interviewed him during our previous search, but he decided to go back to Minnesota."

He is also interested in Phil Jackson, but he doesn't expect to sign the former Lakers and Bulls coach, since Jackson has a reputation for going to teams that are close to a championship and also Allen expects Jackson to command a large payday.

Allen used to have one of the biggest payrolls in the NBA, but he has stated that the days of free spending are over in Portland.

Records Shattered In Oakland, Stoudamire Chucks Up 21 Three-Pointers

Apr 16, 2005 7:13 PM

Damon ?Mighty Mouse? Stoudamire set an NBA record in last nights 108-88 Blazer loss to the new and improved Golden State Warriors.

Stoudamire threw up an astonishing 21 three-point attempts in the contest, a horrific feat that was offset by his 5th career triple-double.  Making good on only 5 of the 21 attempts, Stoudamire finished the game with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in 48 minutes.

"It just came from being in the game so much," Stoudamire said. "Sometimes, you get one when you're working hard, but this one you're in the game so much, the ball just bounces your way."

Seemingly taking a cue from the Toronto Raptors, the Trailblazers attempted 37 three-pointers on the night, setting a team record.  The Warriors threw up 32 themselves and together both teams set the NBA record with 69 combined three-pointers attempted.  The previous of 67 coming April 8 in the Warriors/Suns contest.

"We weren't looking to shoot 37, but I don't think we had that many bad shots," Blazers interim coach Kevin Pritchard said. "We had some good looks, but we couldn't knock them down."

Sky Pilot Demands Trade

Apr 15, 2005 2:06 PM

Ruben Patterson is so frustrated with the maturity of his fellow Blazers that he is demanding to be traded before next season.

"I don't want to get into details, but I think I'm gonna sit out these last four games. Because I went through so much for this team and it doesn't seem like these guys want to win here," Patterson said. "And I can't deal with that. I don't know if it's management or what, but it's obvious they want to play the young guys. I'm too good of a player for that. We are out there, trying to play hard and help this team win, and it seems like they don't care.

"If it's going to be like this, it's no use in me being here," Patterson said. "It's about winning with me right now. I don't want to be here. They just need to trade me."

Blazers Season Ticket Holders Allowed To Cancel Multiyear Contracts

Apr 7, 2005 2:43 PM

Loyal fans of the lowly Portland Trailblazers are being given the option to cancel their season ticket contracts in favor of a year-by-year program in a move to hold on to a fan base that continues to dwindle.

Attendance is dwindling and the Blazers are trying to appease fans while they build up a new team.

If the Blazers want to rebuild their popularity, it makes sense to start with those who have been loyal through the toughest times, said Paul Swangard of the University of Oregon's Warsaw Sports Marketing Center.

"This is a great step for them to move in that direction," Swangard said. "It's always more cost-effective to hold on to the customer you have than to go out and acquire new customers."

Warriors Win Their 11th Game In 13 Tries

Apr 7, 2005 12:53 AM

The Warriors won their 11th game in 13 tries on Wednesday, beating the Blazers in Portland by a final score of 104-102.

Baron Davis was again the catalyst for the Warriors, scoring 22 points and racking up 11 assists.  Troy Murphy contributed a double-double, 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Ruben Patterson scored 27 points for the Blazers, who have now lost 50 games this season.

The Warriors are now 13-7 since trading Dale Davis and Speedy Claxton for Baron Davis.  He has given the Warriors a confidence and swagger that Golden State hasn't seen since the days of Tim Hardaway and Chris Mullin.

Raja Bell did not make the latest Utah Jazz road trip due to a myriad of nagging injuries that will not seem to go away.  He was not allowed to participate in the Jazz?s 90-79 win over Portland because of a bruised shin and tendonitis in his foot.

Coach McMillan Voices Displeasure Over Loss; Fortson Hurts Shoulder

Apr 4, 2005 2:30 PM

"We didn't play together," McMillan said. "But that's what happened tonight. We didn't work together. We didn't use each other."

Though the Sonics are hobbled by injuries, Sonic coach Nate McMillan is still unhappy with the way his team is playing, especially after last night?s 101-92 loss to surging Golden State.

"That's ridiculous to give up that amount of points," McMillan said. "When you're giving up easy baskets like that, it's going to be a long night."

To add injury to insult, Danny Fortson injured his shoulder in Friday?s win over the Portland Trailblazers, however was still able to play versus Golden State.

The Nuggets were down one point heading into the 4th quarter, but outscored the Blazers 24-17 on the way to a 103-97 win.

"That's kind of the trademark of our team," said Denver coach George Karl. "We keep things close and then we figure it out in the fourth quarter."

Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points and reserve Earl Boykins added 17 points, leading the Nuggets to their 17th win in 19 games, which also put them into the 7th spot in the Western Conference playoffs.
