St. John's Parts Ways With Steve Lavin, Interested In Chris Mullin

Mar 27, 2015 3:52 PM

St. John's and Steve Lavin have mutually agreed to part ways after five seasons.

Lavin and the school were previously deep into extension talks. Lavin led St. John's to the second round of the tournament.

"Coach Lavin returned high expectations to our men's basketball program and represented St. John's in a positive way," St. John's athletic director Chris Monasch said in a statement Friday. "We appreciate his commitment to the program and to our student-athletes over the past five years."

St. John's is interested in former NBA player and St. John's star Chris Mullin as Lavin's replacement. Mullin, who led St. John's to the 1985 Final Four, works as an adviser for the Sacramento Kings.

Omri Casspi Encouraged By George Karl, Wants To Re-Sign With Kings

Mar 25, 2015 12:38 PM

Omri Casspi would like to re-sign with the Sacramento Kings in free agency this offseason.

Casspi has been encouraged by the initial weeks of George Karl's tenure.

“I want to come back here so badly,” Casspi said. “I love the community and I feel like the team is finally moving in the right direction. George Karl’s system is great, and I’m not just saying that because I play for him, but because I really do believe this is the right way to play basketball. Spacing the floor. Moving, making extra passes, sharing the ball. Getting our hands on balls, deflections, then getting out and running. Unfortunately, coach Karl has not had a lot of time to teach us everything, but these last two games, you can see what we can become.”

Casspi is represented by Dan Fegan, who is also agent for DeMarcus Cousins.

Casspi's girlfriend is a native of Los Angeles who has practice law in Israel. If Casspi re-signs, she plans on taking the California bar exam.

“Shani loves it here,” Casspi said of his girlfriend. “We both do. This community has been through so much, and now we are on the right path. I want to be a part of that, especially with that new arena coming, coach Karl and Vlade here. When the time comes, my agent will talk to (general manager) Pete (D’Alessandro) and hopefully we get it done.”
