Atkins Re-Signs With Memphis

Jul 31, 2006 8:28 PM

The Memphis Grizzlies signed guard Chucky Atkins for another year, the team announced Monday. Terms were not disclosed.

He came to Memphis in January from the Washington Wizards. With the Grizzlies he averaged 11.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and three assists in 43 games.

"Having him and Damon Stoudamire as experienced point guards who can mentor our younger players is invaluable to this team," team president Jerry West said in a statement.

Grizzlies, Atkins Nearing Agreement

Jul 30, 2006 2:21 AM

The Grizzlies have negotiated with point guard Chucky Atkins over the past few days and the free-agent could re-sign with the team as soon as today, the Memphis Commercial-Appeal is reporting.

Atkins will likely agree to a two-year deal, with the Grizzlies expected to use part of the mid-level exception to retain his services.

Atkins repeatedly said that he wanted to remain in Memphis.

"Of the teams that wanted me, I felt this was best the situation for me," Atkins said in January. "It was more conducive to the style of basketball that I play. Plus, they're one of the top teams in the West, and I know you can't win without good chemistry and without having good players."

The Grizzlies Complete Trade Of Battier For Swift, Gay

Jul 12, 2006 2:52 PM

The Grizzlies completed a trade sending forward Shane Battier to the Rockets for Stromile Swift and Rudy Gay on Wednesday.

Gay, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward from Connecticut, started 59 games and averaged 13.6 points and 5.9 rebounds last season. He was taken with the eighth overall pick in the draft. Gay signed a two-year deal with team options for a third and fourth years immediately after the trade was completed.

The deal also brings back Swift, a 6-9, 230-pound forward the Grizzlies allowed to leave as a free agent last summer.

But the Grizzlies gave up Battier, the team's first draft pick after moving to Memphis from Vancouver.

Spurs Still Looking For Center

Jul 5, 2006 3:03 AM

The Spurs missed out on both Joel Przybilla, who re-upped in Portland, and their own free agent Nazr Mohommed, who has bolted to Detroit to take Ben Wallace's place, but the San Antonio Express-News reports that the Spurs are still looking for that big man to play next to Tim Duncan.

"We're happy for Nazr; I think he got the contract he was looking for," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. "We certainly appreciate the contributions he made to our program. He was an important part of our championship."

The team will sign 6-foot-10 Lithuanian Robertas Javtokas, a former second-round draft pick, but doesn't consider him a serious candidate to start.

Utah's Jarron Collins and Memphis' Lorenzen Wright are probably the top remaining free-agent centers in a shallow pool that also includes Scot Pollard, Michael Olowokandi, Jake Voskuhl and Kelvin Cato, and restricted free agents Melvin Ely and Jackie Butler.

Collins earned only $1.7 million last season, making him an affordable option, but the Jazz also hope to re-sign him.

The Spurs also will continue to explore trades. Milwaukee is trying to move Jamaal Magloire, but it's yet to be determined whether the Spurs have enough assets ? namely Brent Barry and Scola's rights ? to make any deal.

Cavs Begin Talks With Gooden: Also Talk With Przybilla, Wright

Jul 3, 2006 5:46 AM

The Cleveland Cavaliers have begun talks with restricted free agent Drew Gooden, but according to The Morning Journal the team would prefer to square away the extension negotiations with superstar LeBron James before taking care of other matters.

Gooden, according to his agent, is listening to other options and has received ''some bites''.  Should Gooden sign an offer sheet with another team, the Cavaliers have seven days to match.

The Cavaliers reportedly spoke to the agents for two other big men -- Portland center Joel Przybilla and Memphis forward/center Lorenzen Wright.

Also, they talked to agent Mark Bartelstein about Los Angeles Lakers swingman Devean George, who is unrestricted.
