Doleac to sign with Knicks

Jul 30, 2002 8:43 AM

Mitch Lawrence of the New York Daily News reports: Besides gambling on Antonio McDyess' surgically repaired knees, the Knicks are adding another big man coming off a serious leg injury, agreeing to the $1 million exception yesterday with free-agent backup center Michael Doleac.
The Knicks said last night nothing was finalized, but sources said there could be an announcement as soon as today.

Doleac, 25, missed almost half of last season for Cleveland after suffering a broken left ankle. But that apparently didn't dissuade Knicks president Scott Layden from picking up the 6-11 backup, the first free agent the Knicks contacted on July 1, and a player Layden has tried several times to trade for in the past.

Layden has rolled some big dice on McDyess, who missed all but 10 games last season in Denver. To a lesser extent, he's also taking a gamble on Doleac, who broke the ankle last Nov. 21 and missed 30 games. At least Doleac returned from his injury, in January, but saw limited playing time the rest of the season for the 29-win Cavaliers. In 42 games, he averaged only 4.6 ppg and 4.0 rebounds in 17 minutes a game.

Doleac, who made $2 million last season, is taking a pay cut. Although it's called the $1 million exception, it's actually for slightly more. The 12th overall pick in the 1998 draft by Orlando, Doleac will make $1.4 million this coming season and $1.5 million next season.

Doleac's signing still leaves the Knicks with the $4.5 million exception, but it's doubtful they'll be using it. Like many other players in this watered down free-agent pool, Doleac did not have many suitors. According to league sources, only Memphis and the Knicks had serious interest in signing him. But once the Grizzlies signed Cezary Trybanski, a 7-1 center out of Poland, to a three-year, $4.8 million deal, Doleac was left with only the Knicks' offer.

Miller/Miles trade complete

Jul 29, 2002 7:36 PM

Randy Hill of FoxSports.com reports that the Clippers/Cavaliers trade is finally confirmed. The Clippers have received Andre Miller and Bryant Stith in exchange for Darius Miles and Harold Jamison. Miller will now be able to negotiate with the Clippers for that maximum salary contract extension.

The Clippers, who haven?t employed a star-caliber point guard since the franchise?s inception, now have the reigning league leader in assists. Miller, 26, averaged 16.5 points, 10.9 assists and 4.7 rebounds while making 45 percent of his field-goal attempts.

Cleveland will welcome Miles, a 6-foot-9 acrobat who turns 21 the second week of training camp. In two seasons after hopping from high school to the draft?s third overall selection in 2001, Miles has been the Clippers? crowd-galvanizing seventh man. He averaged 9.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, shooting 48 percent from the field in 27.2 minutes per game.

After failing to complete a trade on draft night, the two teams were finally able to get something done. Now the Clippers have a young and talented point guard to play with the likes of Michael Olowokandi, Quentin Richardson, Odom, hard-charging Corey Maggette and recently signed Euro guard Marko Jaric. They also have two skilled, young big men selected as lottery dividends.

The Clippers now are prepared to sign lottery picks Chris Wilcox and Melvin Ely within the next 24 hours. Wilcox, a 6-9 power forward from Maryland, was the Clips? choice at 8; Ely, a 6-9? center-forward out of Fresno State, was taken at 12.

?Adding Miller and keeping Odom with that bunch could be devastating,? one Western Conference assistant coach muttered on condition of anonymity. ?With a point guard like Andre, these guys might be good enough to make the playoffs and win a series right now.?

Knicks, Nets diving into free agent pool

Jul 29, 2002 8:42 AM

Fred Kerber of the New York Post reports that both the Nets and the Knicks are stepping up their efforts to land free agents. The Knicks are trying to bolster their front court with Cleveland?s Michael Doleac while the Nets want to sign a quality backup point guard in Toronto?s Chris Childs.

The Nets are close to a deal with Childs and could announce a contract as early as this week. It is expected that he will sign for two years and about $3.5 million.

The Knicks aren?t as close to a deal, but according to league sources, talks between the team and the 6-11 center are heating up and moving into the serious stage. Doleac is expected to be in New York for a ?recruiting trip? later this week.

"It's going fine. I'm optimistic Michael would be a real good fit if it were to happen," Doleac's agent, Glen Schwartzman, said yesterday. "We're still talking and I'll really have a better feel for matters [today]."

Report: Clippers and Cavs Close to a Deal

Jul 27, 2002 8:30 AM

The Morning Journal, a rather unknown source of information, is reporting that the Cleveland Cavaliers are ready to trade Andre Miller to the Clippers in a three-team trade.

Bob Finnan quotes a Western Conference source as saying that Darius Miles and Harold Jamison will be traded to Cleveland. There is no report on who the third team is.

The Clippers and Cavs tried to close a deal on draft night that hit several stumbling blocks. The original deal reportedly included Lamar Odom and the 8th overall pick in the draft.

Nuggets seek to move Posey, target Davis

Jul 26, 2002 9:18 AM

Kyle Ringo of the Rocky Mountain News reports that the Nuggets want to make a few changes. They are looking to trade James Posey and sign Cleveland free agent Ricky Davis.

The Nuggets are still looking for a trade partner to take Posey. They were close to trading him to Washington before the draft, but the Wizards backed out when the Nuggets asked for too much in return.

A source said that Denver has discussed deals with several teams and even Washington has sowed renewed interest. Trading Posey makes sense if the Nuggets are actually targeting swingman Ricky Davis. Denver general manager Kiki Vandeweghe denied trying to trade Posey, but when asked Thursday if the Nuggets were pursuing Davis, he admitted they are interested.

"He's a very good player," Vandeweghe said.

Davis is a restricted free agent, meaning that the Cavaliers can match any offer from any other team. If the Nuggets were to sign Davis to an offer sheet, they Cavs could match the offer and steal him from Denver.

The teams could work a sign and trade deal instead, which would allow Denver to get Davis and Cleveland to get some compensation in return. Davis could start for Denver at shooting guard, where Posey is scheduled to play. It is unlikely he would start at small forward if he came to Denver because the Nuggets are hoping to give rookie Nikoloz Tskitishvili the bulk of the playing time there to speed his development.

Davis, Cavs $20M apart in talks

Jul 24, 2002 8:45 AM

Chris Tomasson of the Beacon-Journal reports that the Cavaliers and free agent Ricky davis are not close to a deal. They are currently about 2 years and $20 million ?apart?.

Davis' brother, Alonge Davis, revealed Tuesday what each side wants. Alonge Davis also said Denver and Minnesota are the teams most actively pursuing the restricted free agent.

``Dan (Fegan, the agent for Ricky Davis) wants a minimum of $7 million a year for five or six years,'' Alonge Davis said. ``He figures that's the kind of money that Wesley Person was making before they cleared it for Ricky. The Cavaliers are offering an average of $5 million over three years.'' That means that Davis is looking for 5 years and about $35 million while the Cavaliers are offering 3 years and $15 million.

The Cavs are offering a contract close to the mid-class exception. Both Denver and Minnesota could offer approximately the same package with their own exceptions. As a restricted free agent, the Cavs will have the opportunity to match any offers for Davis.

``Ricky would love to stay in Cleveland, though,'' Alonge Davis said. ``I think (the two sides) will come to an agreement. (The Cavs) know how much the fans love Ricky, even more than Andre Miller. I don't see Paxson dragging it out.''

Layden Wooing Doleac

Jul 23, 2002 8:28 AM

Greg Logan of Newsday reports that the Knicks are still looking to bolster their front court by talking with Cleveland free agent Michael Doleac.

Layden has been bargain shopping for help in the middle. He declined to offer the full $4.55 million mid-level salary exception to Jerome James, who got that amount to re-sign with Seattle last week, but Doleac, who made just over $2 million last year with the Cavs, might agree to take half the exception. Two NBA sources and another person close to Doleac confirmed the meeting.

The free agent market got a boost yesterday when Toronto made Keon Clark an unrestricted free agent. Clark?s agent, Jim Mourer said yesterday that he still hasn't heard from Layden since his initial call when the negotiating period opened July 1.

Knicks, Hawks, Talk Spree Swap

Jul 19, 2002 8:29 AM

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News gives us the latest version of the Sprewell trade rumor. The teams this time: New York, Atlanta and either Cleveland or Minnesota.

According to a league source, the Knicks are trying to recruit the Hawks to get involved in a trade for Latrell Sprewell, which will bring Cleveland's Andre Miller or Minnesota's Wally Szczerbiak to New York.

"They've been talking all summer about a deal," the source said.

Atlanta is trying to trade Jason Terry, but the Knicks will not take Terry, an undersized shooting guard, for Sprewell, their best player. Knicks GM Scot Layden seems determined to acquire Cleveland point guard Andre Miller. The Cavs, who are looking to deal Miller, would have little interest in Sprewell. They plan on resigning Ricky Davis and they drafted DeJuan Wagner.

But Cleveland GM Jim Paxson would be willing to strike a deal if the Knicks could find a third team.

The negotiations are further proof that the Knicks' front office has reached the conclusion that it can no longer survive with Sprewell and Allan Houston playing alongside each other. With Houston?s bloated contract, Sprewell is the only real option to be used in trade.
