Cavaliers Running Offense Through Varejao

Nov 28, 2012 1:25 PM

Anderson Varejao is having a remarkable November, averaging 14.1 points, 14.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.

"To me, he’s the best center in the NBA,” Byron Scott said. “He’s by far the best in the Eastern Conference. Coaches and players are starting to recognize how well he’s playing. He has nine games of 15 or more rebounds. I don’t think there’s anyone in the league close to that right now.”

Varejao has increased his importance in the Cavaliers' offense with Kyrie Irving injured.

“We told him to shoot the ball when he had open shots,” Scott said. “This year, he has a lot more confidence taking shots.

“We’re running the offense through him. He’s the facilitator.”

Varejao is shooting 51 percent from the field and has extended his range.

Kyrie Irving Emerging As Elite Pitchman

Nov 17, 2012 10:27 PM

Kyrie Irving is emerging as one of the top pitchmen in the NBA.

“If you make a list of the best actors who also have a sports connection, he’s edging into that list that includes LeBron, Shaq, Dwight Howard and Kobe,” ESPN sports business reporter Darren Rovell said. “When you’re thinking about executing an ad with copy, those are the guys you go to. Kyrie is edging into that group.”

Since turning pro last year, Irving’s pitched Nike, Pepsi Max, Foot Locker, Skullcandy and EA Sports.

Irving has drawn high praise for his role as “Uncle Drew,” a character he helped develop for the Pepsi Max series.

“There’s something about what he’s done. He’s almost better off the court than on it,” Rovell said. “He’s doing well [playing], but he’s been so fantastic with the Uncle Drew thing.”

LeBron Believes Lakers Didn't Give Mike Brown 'Fair Shake'

Nov 10, 2012 11:45 AM

LeBron James played under Mike Brown for several seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers and was surprised by his sudden firing as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers after a 1-4 start.

"I think it's unfortunate," James said Friday. "I just don't think he got a fair shake, honestly. With the shortened season last year, and five games into this year, he didn't really get a full season."

James was publicly silent about the fate of Brown after the Cavaliers were eliminated in the 2010 NBA Playoffs.

"I've got a lot to say, but I'm not going to say it right now," said James. "I wish him the best, but I just think it's unfortunate and it's just, you know, how the league is. They can do what they want to do."

Waiters Showcases Why Cavaliers Liked Him 4th Overall With 28 Points

Nov 6, 2012 9:26 AM

Dion Waiters had a career-high 28 points in the Cleveland Cavaliers' 108-101 win at the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday.

Waiters showcased his ability to create his own offense, which is what the Cavaliers sought when they drafted him fourth overall to pair with Kyrie Irving.

“This is what we were thinking, that we had another guy who could make plays and could score and also find other guys, beat people off the dribble, create for himself, create for teammates,” Byron Scott said. “It’s exactly what we were thinking about.”

Waiters shot just 36 percent on 3-pointers last season at Syracuse, but he has started his NBA career making 55 percent (11 of 20).

“I was feeling good,” Waiters said. “They kept giving me the ball and I was able to knock down shots.”

Waiters appears to be growing more comfortably playing alongside Irving.

“I thought they came of age the last game (at Milwaukee) and they’re just getting better,” Scott said. “They’re still getting used to each other. They still haven’t played together that much, but it’s starting to come along a lot better than I thought.”
