Luka Doncic Not Yet Pushing For Mavs To Sign Goran Dragic

Feb 18, 2022 2:15 PM

Goran Dragic cleared waivers on Thursday, after a buyout from the San Antonio Spurs. Several contenders are interested in picking up Dragic for the stretch run, but Luka Doncic hasn't pushed his Dallas Mavericks to pick up his countryman...yet.

Before this season started, when Dragic was still a member of the Toronto Raptors, Doncic talked with Mavs front office leaders about adding the veteran point guard. Following the trade deadline, Dallas GM Nico Harrison that he had no further roster moves planned. Despite that, Doncic hasn't given up hope that he may still team up with Dragic.

“He’s my guy,” Doncic said. “Everybody would want their guys on their team, so we’ll see.”

Doncic has talked about how his father, Sasa, was Dragic's mentor when they both played for the same club in Slovenia. Doncic has known Dragic since he was a five-year-old tagging along with his dad to practices and games. Doncic and Dragic later teamed together to lead Slovenia to the 2017 EuroBasket championship.

Mark Cuban: Mavericks To Be In Luxury Tax Hell Next Season

Feb 14, 2022 3:38 PM

The Dallas Mavericks traded Kristaps Porzingis, at least in part, to balance their salaries moving forward. Dallas will almost certainly be in the luxury tax during the 22-23 season.

The $207 million extension signed by Luka Doncic will begin, while Davis Bertans and Spencer Dinwiddie are signed for $17 million and $18 million. The Mavericks signed Dorian Finney-Smith to an extension and will also do every this possible to re-sign Jalen Brunson.

“We’re going to be in luxury tax hell next year, but that’s OK; it frees up the year after that,” Mark Cuban said.

The Mavericks will have Maxi Kleber and Dwight Powell come off their books after the 22-23 season.

Daryl Morey Also Had Mavericks As Potential Landing Spot When Stepping Down In 2020

Feb 14, 2022 11:14 AM

When Daryl Morey stepped down running the Houston Rockets in the fall of 2020, he expected to spend more time with family.

"My youngest son just graduated from high school, and it was just the right time to see what's next with family and other potential things in the future," Morey told ESPN at the time.

Morey was hired soon thereafter by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Sources tell Yaron Weitzman of Fox Sports that Morey had also considered the Dallas Mavericks as a potential future landing spot. The Mavericks had Donnie Nelson running the front office at the time, but they parted ways during the subsequent season. Mark Cuban is known as one of the NBA's most involved owners, while Morey had enjoyed relative autonomy for much of his Houston tenure.

Raptors, Mavericks Have Possibly Discussed Kristaps Porzingis Trade

Feb 10, 2022 11:21 AM

The Toronto Raptors and Dallas Mavericks have discussed the framework of a Kristaps Porzingis, according to front offices of rival teams that spoke with Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.

Fischer adds that it is unclear how serious talks are at this point.

The Raptors have been linked to other big men such as Myles Turner.

The Mavericks, meanwhile, have interest in acquiring Goran Dragic. Dallas has been considered more likely to acquire Dragic if he's bought out after the deadline.

Porzingis signed a five-year, $158 million contract with the Mavericks during the 2019 offseason. Porzingis is due $33.8 million in 22-23 and $36 million in 23-24.

While Porzingis has had a more productive season in 21-22, he has continued to have injury issues.

Tim MacMahon of ESPN interjected that Dallas would seek "a lot more" from the Raptors than the Dragic plus pick package that has been shopped across the league.

Mavericks Have Interest In Trading For C.J. McCollum

Feb 5, 2022 12:33 PM

The Portland Trail Blazers already started their roster retooling by trading away Norman Powell and Robert Covington. There's some thought that long-time Blazer C.J. McCollum could be next.

The New Orleans Pelicans are a known suiter for McCollum, but the Dallas Mavericks could also be in the mix as well. Dallas reportedly likes the idea of pairing McCollum with Luka Doncic in an offensively-charged backcourt.

Matching salary in a deal for McCollum's $30.8 could be problematic for the Mavs. Dallas doesn't appear to have the combination of short-term salary, plus young prospects to put together a deal for McCollum. The Mavs have also been reluctant to part with either Jalen Brunson or Dorian Finney-Smith in trades before next week's deadline.

Mavs Turned Down Late Lottery Pick For Dorian Finney-Smith

Feb 5, 2022 9:12 AM

The Dallas Mavericks are seeking to upgrade their roster before the trade deadline, but don't intend to part with Dorian Finney-Smith as part of that process. Dallas recently turned down an offer of a late lottery pick for the sixth-year forward.

Finney-Smith is currently on one of the NBA's best value contracts, as he's making just $4 million in the final year of his deal. He's averaging a career-high 10.1 points, to go along with 4.8 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. Finney-Smith is also the Mavericks best wing defender.

There's been speculation that with Finney-Smith and guard Jalen Brunson being looming unrestricted free agents, that the Mavs may look to trade either or both players. Dallas is currently projected to be just under the luxury tax for the 2022-23 season. And that's before re-signing Brunson or Finney-Smith to deals that will likely start in the $15-20 million range in first-year salary.

Jalen Brunson Prefers To Re-Sign With Mavs, Trade Unlikely Without Major Offer

Feb 1, 2022 11:47 AM

The Dallas Mavericks have been rumored to be listening to trade offers for point guard Jalen Brunson. However, listening and making a deal are two different things, and the Mavs have set a steep asking price for Brunson.

Speaking on The Lowe Post Podcast, ESPN's Tim MacMahon said, "I have been assured that they will not move Brunson before the trade deadline unless it is, and I quote, a 'What the bleep are they thinking type of offer?'"

Brunson status as an upcoming unrestricted free agent this summer seems to be sparking some of the trade interest. Both MacMahon and host Zach Lowe said that Dallas is going to have to pay to keep the guard.

"This I know: Jalen Brunson’s preference would be to stay in Dallas. He ain’t taking a discount to do it," said MacMahon. "He wants to get paid, period. Preferably in Dallas. I’ve asked around about that, I feel like I’ve got very strong information there.
