Nikola Jokic: Chet Holmgren Needs To Be A Little Bit Fatter

Oct 30, 2023 12:54 PM

Nikola Jokic spoke positively of Chet Holmgren after their first meeting, but suggested the rookie big man put on more weight.

“He’s a really talented guy, but this is his first year. He’s still learning everything: the game, how quick it is, where is (he at) an advantage, where is (he at) a disadvantage,” Jokic said. “I think he needs experience. I think he needs to be a little bit fatter, to be honest. But yes, he has a talent that is unique.”

Jokic couldn't help but put on weight when he entered the league whereas it might be a struggle for Holmgren.

“I didn’t have an option,” Jokic said.

Calvin Booth Says Quotes About Nuggets Weren't For 'Public Consumption'

Oct 18, 2023 8:42 AM

While speaking during the ESPN2 broadcast of the Denver Nuggets-LA Clippers preseason game, Denver general manager Calvin Booth addressed some recent comments he made about current and former Nuggets. Both was referring to quotes that were published in a profile piece by The Ringer.

“Under no circumstances would I make or approve of those kinds of comments for public consumption," Booth said. "That’s not my character, as a person or an executive.”

In the quotes in question, Booth said Michael Porter Jr. and former Nuggets guard Bones Hyland were "me" players. He also said neither played enough defense, which necessitate trading Hyland.

Booth also insinuated that former Denver wing Bruce Brown might not be the player people think he is. That comment came while Booth was talking up second-year wing Peyton Watson, who may fill Brown's role after he signed with the Indiana Pacers.

Calvin Booth On Bruce Brown Leaving Denver: Be Careful What You Wish For

Oct 17, 2023 8:56 AM

The Denver Nuggets lost Bruce Brown this offseason. Most consider that a major loss for the defending champions. Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth doesn't necessarily agree.

Booth is high on second-year wing Peyton Watson taking a big step forward this season. So much so that Booth believes Watson is ready to replace Brown, albeit in different ways.

“Some of these teams were trying to get Bruce, trying to make it worth it; it’s like, just be careful what you wish for,” Booth said about the rivals that pursued Brown. “Peyton’s bigger. He’s longer. He’s more athletic. He guards better. He passes better. He doesn’t have the experience, and he’s not as good offensively yet, but we need defense more than we need offense on our team.”

Brown signed a two-year, $45 million contract with the Indiana Pacers this past summer. The Nuggets were limited in how much they could offer Brown, as they held only Non-Bird rights for the veteran wing.

Nuggets Traded Bones Hyland Because Of Defense

Oct 17, 2023 8:49 AM

Denver Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth was candid in discussing how he's built the roster since taking over two seasons ago. Booth said finding a balance has been one of his goals. And finding that offense-defense balance led to a trade last season.

On trading young guard Bones Hyland, Booth said defense and finances paid a part. Booth said that there was just too much overlap with Hyland and Michael Porter Jr. on the roster together.

“I knew you couldn’t have two guys that couldn’t guard, and we couldn’t have two guys that were young and kind of more ‘me guys,’” Booth said. “Mike makes $30 million. He’s one of the best shooters in the NBA. So, Bones, there’s no place for you.”

Nuggets Exercise 24-25 Option For Peyton Watson

Oct 13, 2023 9:13 AM

The Denver Nuggets have exercised their 2024-25 rookie scale team option for forward Peyton Watson. This is the third-year option for Watson, who was drafted in 2022.

Watson didn't play much as a rookie, but the Nuggets believe he'll factor into their rotation in his second season. The 6-foot-8 wing is expected to help replace some of what Denver lost with Bruce Brown leaving for the Indiana Pacers in free agency.
