LeBron James Feared Pat Riley Would Break Up Heat If They Lost To Celtics In 2012

Mar 23, 2020 10:10 AM

During the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals, the Miami Heat were down 3-2 against the Boston Celtics and LeBron James feared Pat Riley would break up the team if they were eliminated.

The Heat were in Year 2 of the experiment of James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

"My mentality was if we lose, [Heat president] Pat Riley may break us all up. And I [didn't] want that," James said. "It might be the quickest breakup in basketball history."

The Heat never seriously considered such action and went on to win The Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Heat also signed Ray Allen that offseason.

James scored 30 points in the first half of Game 6.

"Not only might they break it all up, but my legacy is going to take a huge, huge hit if I don't go out here and perform at an all-time high," James said Thursday.

Adam Silver Suggests NBA Finals Could Take Place In July If Season Resumes

Mar 13, 2020 2:28 AM

Adam Silver appeared on TNT's Inside the NBA to discuss the possibilities of how the rest of the season could play out.

Silver suspended the league for at least 30 days in an open letter to NBA fans.

While Silver did not rule out suspending the season for good, he added that the league could stretch out the season into July if need be.

“Even if we are out for a month, even if we are out for six weeks, we could still restart the season. It might mean that the Finals take place in July or late July. It was way premature to suggest that we had lost the season," said Silver.

Brad Turner of the LA Times reported that Lakers players came away from a conference call with the sense that NBA owners want to finish the regular season and playoffs, even if it takes the season into July or August.

Frank Vogel Says 'It's Probably Going To Be A Few Games' Before Dion Waiters Debut

Mar 7, 2020 11:11 PM

Frank Vogel said he plans to move slowly with integrating Dion Waiters into the Los Angeles Lakers lineup.

"It's probably going to be a few games. He hadn't played all year. ... It's a matter of acclimating, getting used to our system, getting a few practices under his belt," said Vogel.

Waiters had his first practice with the Lakers on Saturday.

Waiters spoke of his positive relationship with LeBron James from their time in Cleveland.

"I mean, it's always been a bond. Even when I left. We always see each other, we always showed love. So, nothing really changed. It's just different teams. We don't get to see each other as much, as often, but when we did it was always genuine. So, when I came here, like I said, they welcomed me with open arms," said Waiters.

LeBron James Says He's Putting Lakers 'Back Where They Needed To Be' After Clinching Playoff Spot

Mar 7, 2020 12:34 PM

LeBron James had 37 points, 8 assists, and 8 rebounds in the Los Angeles Lakers' 113-103 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Lakers clinched a playoff spot for the first time in six seasons.

"I came here to put this team and put this franchise back where they needed to be. The league is not what it is if the Lakers are not winning. And that was one of my responsibilities, one of my goals when I came here," said James after the game.

The Lakers, now 48-13, will play the Clippers on Sunday.

The Clippers, who have won six straight games, beat the Lakers on opening night and on Christmas Day.

"We know how well they've been playing as of late. They're at full strength. We're at full strength. And we look forward to the challenge to see how we can match up with them again. So, you know, the first game, we kind of threw that game out the window. It's the first game of the season. Who were we? Who were they? They had way more returning guys than we did [at that point]. We were still trying to figure out ourselves ... so we just look forward to see if we can continue to play good basketball, no matter win, lose or draw," said James of the previous losses to the Clippers.
