Jim Dolan Spending Less Time Around Knicks, Not Involved In Free Agency

Sep 12, 2014 4:43 PM

Jim Dolan says he has taken a step back as owner of the New York Knicks, ceding control of basketball operations to Phil Jackson and Steve Mills.

“I am definitely spending less time with the Knicks,” Dolan said.

“I’ll be fine. I have a tremendous amount of confidence in Phil and Steve, and that is the part that I would say is definitely much better from last year. With the two of them in there, I’m confident they’re going to find a way. And there won’t be anything for me to do.

“It was always my intention to have other people do it. But it was also my intention that the other people would win. We didn’t always do that. A good executive, when things aren’t going well, gets down and finds out what’s going wrong and tries to fix it.”

An early test for Dolan and the new front office came in July when Carmelo Anthony faced free agency and the Knicks made other roster moves.

“I simply said, ‘If you need me, call me,' ” Dolan recalled about Jackson, pausing for half a beat. “He did not call me.”

“Jim’s told me he’s been really glad that he hasn’t had to delve into it,” Jackson added.

Jackson did approach Dolan when the Knicks were in negotiations with Steve Kerr to become the team's coach. Kerr ultimately took the job with the Golden State Warriors.

“I wanted to know how flexible he was in that territory, and he was,” Jackson said.

Carmelo Never Wants To Deal With Free Agency Again

Sep 5, 2014 12:38 PM

Carmelo Anthony never wants to deal with the free agency process again after signing a five-year, $124 million deal.

“I plan on ending my career here, so it wasn’t for me to go out there and try to strike a two-year deal and then have to go through this situation in two years. I’m not doing that ever again. I would never do that again. I would advise no one to ever do that,” Anthony said. “I experienced it and it’s behind me.”

Anthony noted a move also would have meant restarting his brand from scratch.

“I just felt if I was to leave, I would have to … build that foundation up once again, and it took me a while to build that foundation and to get it up and going to where it’s at right now,” Anthony said.

Carmelo Hopes To Become Pioneer As Athlete In Digital Media

Sep 5, 2014 12:30 PM

Carmelo Anthony has ambitious plans as a businessman.

Anthony and business partner Stuart Goldfarb, former VP of NBC, launched Melo7 Tech Partners this summer. The company invests in startup firms specializing in digital media, Internet consumer ventures and technology-based operations.

“I want to brand myself as the digital athlete,” Anthony said Thursday at the Bloomberg Sports Business Summit in Manhattan. “Nobody really took that place. There’ve been athletes that came before me that were doing what I’m doing and there are going to be people after me that are doing what I’m doing.

“But I really want to be the pioneer for that digital athlete, and when it comes to tech I want to be the face of that space,” said Anthony.

Anthony has noted how Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and David Beckham have become known worldwide for their business interests.

“At the end of the day, we all know what’s my day job: basketball,” Anthony said. “That’s what my brand is built on, but I’m trying to take my brand to the next level, make it bigger, make it stronger.”
