Woj: Anthony Davis Looking For Reasons To Stay More Than Reasons To Leave New Orleans

Oct 22, 2018 9:44 PM

Anthony Davis will be eligible for a supermax contract this offseason, which will go a long ways to determining what the future of the NBA holds depending on whether he chooses to sign it.

If Davis decides not to sign the extension, the New Orleans Pelicans could look to trade him.

"My sense has always been with Anthony that he is always: some players are looking for reasons to stay and some players are looking for reasons to leave," said Adrian Wojnarowski on the Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective Show. "I've always thought that Anthony is a guy looking for reasons to stay in New Orleans. And I think that will continue to be the case until he feels he's out of them.

"I do think down the line that the Boston and L.A., if he became available, that will be interesting, especially if the Lakers get shut out this summer."

Kyrie Irving Considered Knicks Before Announcing Intention To Re-Sign With Celtics

Oct 21, 2018 6:21 PM

Kyrie Irving said he strongly considered the New York Knicks as a potential free agent destination before he announced his intention to re-sign with the Boston Celtics.

"I mean, every team was under consideration, but obviously New York held a special place for me," Irving said after the Celtics' 103-101 win over the Knicks on Saturday night. "Just being from (New) Jersey and, obviously, envisioning myself as a free agent and ultimately taking a meeting and playing for (Knicks head coach David Fizdale) and a great young core that they have here. Thinking about playing with (Kristaps Porzingis). That was a big thing before I made my decision just to ... plan on re-signing back with Boston. But yeah of course New York was a strong consideration."

Irving has a player option for 2019-20, the final season of his five-year, $94 million contract. Irving is expected to re-sign with the Celtics in 2019.

"I think if you were in my position, I think it would be an easy decision," Irving said of his decision to commit to the Celtics. "Thinking about who we have (in Boston) and the future and what we're set up for. For me, it was where I am in age and how I envision my career going. And kind of the lineage of guys that have come before me in the Boston Celtics is something I wanted to be a part of. Obviously, my dad and my mom met in Boston, so I had a lot of history there, as well. Obviously, being from New Jersey, (there's) history there. But Boston, there's nothing like it."

Terry Rozier, Celtics Discussing Extension

Oct 11, 2018 5:01 PM

The Boston Celtics and Terry Rozier have remained engaged on extension discussions ahead of the Oct. 15 deadline.

Rozier emerged as a starting caliber NBA point guard while Kyrie Irving was out injured. But Irving plans on re-signing with the Celtics in 2019, which would limit Rozier to a bench role.

"That's something I'm really going to have to sit down and think about," Rozier said about his potential future as a Sixth Man.

The Celtics have resisted including Rozier in trades at various points of his career.

Kyrie Irving Relieved Not To Answer More Questions About Free Agency

Oct 5, 2018 7:51 PM

Kyrie Irving told fans of the Boston Celtics at an event at TD Garden that he planned to re-sign with the team in his 2019 free agency.

Irving explained the timing to reporters the next day.

“I thought it was a perfect time to let everyone know I have every intention to sign back and now I don’t have to answer any questions like, ‘What are you looking for? It was time,” Irving told reporters Friday morning. “I’m glad I can move past it and be with my teammates and we can move forward.”

Irving can sign a five-year, $180 million contract with the Celtics, and just a four-year, $139 million deal with any other team.

Gordon Hayward Feels Good Physically But Not Yet Comfortable On The Floor

Oct 5, 2018 9:17 AM

Gordon Hayward is just 5-for-20 from floor and has committed eight fouls in 59 minutes in preseason since returning from his leg injury.

"Physically, I feel pretty good," Hayward said. "But I don't feel comfortable on the floor yet. It's one thing to be physically able to do everything. It's another to be a basketball player -- the timing and the rhythms. When you've been playing a long time, you just know. But not after you take a huge break, and come back to a new system. The second surgery was such a setback. I was really looking forward to playing 5-on-5 the whole summer. What I'm going through now is what I wanted to do in the summer, but it didn't work out that way."

Hayward had an unexpected second surgery in late May to remove a plate and screws from around the left ankle he shattered. Hayward wishes he had undergone the second surgery earlier.

"I was miserable," Hayward said. "To go back into a walking boot after all that progress -- back on crutches. That was my lowest moment."

"I felt terrible for him," said Danny Ainge.

Kyrie Irving Talks About His Love For Boston

Oct 3, 2018 8:27 AM

The future of Kyrie Irving will be one of the NBA's most critical storylines as he enters the final season of his contract and his second with the Boston Celtics.

“This is probably one of the few times I’ve been happy playing basketball and being in Boston has made it a lot easier, having a great environment, great organization so it’s been awesome,” said Irving.

Irving requested a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2017.

“Coming to Boston, I was thinking of all the teams that were looking to trade [for] me, Boston just swooped in as Danny Ainge does, he just swooped in and it’s like ‘No, we got you.’ And I just started thinking about it and I was just so grateful because my dad went to school at BU, my mom and dad met at BU, I had been at BU for Elite camps but I had no idea I’d come to Boston but when I had the opportunity.”

Irving also touched upon his impending free agency.

“To be in a position to even be considered a franchise free agent is pretty awesome,” he said. “At this point in my career, it’s not so much about the money, it’s not so much about the extra curricular things, it’s like OK, where am I happy? Where am I most comfortable? Who’s going to give me that [atmosphere] where I would love to grow as a human being? I spent more time with my teammates than I do with my family and you want to be in a place where thinking about starting over again, obviously that’s what the thing you think about.

“You think, ‘what about a new location?’ and it’s just like I want to be comfortable and what’s better than being in Boston? This year has felt much different because of the environment that has been created for me and by me and going to the new practice facility. There’s nothing like playing at TD Garden.

“I didn’t say that to appease you guys. I actually love Boston.”
