Michael Porter Jr. Isn't Comfortable Taking COVID-19 Vaccine

Sep 29, 2021 3:09 PM

Michael Porter Jr. revealed that he isn't comfortable taking the COVID-19 vaccine and is adamant there shouldn't be a mandate for NBA players to take it.

“For me, I had COVID twice, I saw how my body reacted, and although the chances are slim, with the vaccine, there’s a chance you could have a bad reaction to it,” Porter said. “For me, I don’t feel comfortable.

“My stance on the mandate is it definitely shouldn’t be a mandate. It should be everyone’s decision. I see it both ways. If you want to get it because you feel more protected and you feel safer, and it’s protecting people around you, get it. That’s good for you. But if you feel like, ‘Oh, for me, I don’t feel safe getting it, then don’t get it.’”

Porter isn't the only player on the Nuggets who is unvaccinated.

“I’ve had it twice, and I don’t know what’s going in my body with a shot, so if I already know how I’m going to react to COVID, I just feel like, for me, I don’t want to risk putting something that might affect me negatively in my body,” Porter said.

Michael Porter Jr., Nuggets Continue To Discuss Extension

Sep 24, 2021 11:52 AM

The Denver Nuggets and Michael Porter Jr. continue to discuss a contract extension.

Porter would become a restricted free agent in 2022 if a deal is not reached. The Nuggets and Porter have until the start of the season to reach a deal.

Porter said he’s leaving negotiations up to his agent, Mark Bartelstein.

“It’s a thing that’s on the radar, but, you know, I try to let my agent do his job,” Porter said. “I’m in the loop. I’m talking with my agent, talking with Tim (Connelly), those guys, but for me, it’s God’s time, and when it’s supposed to happen, it’ll happen. I’m not going to try to rush it. All I’m gonna worry about is getting ready, getting geared up for the season.

“… I love basketball,” Porter added. “It’s not too stressful for me about the money stuff. Of course that’s part of it. I’m just trying to stay in the gym and get better.”

Porter averaged 19 points per games last season.

“Tim and I talk all the time, we have a great relationship,” Bartelstein told The Denver Post. “Michael is completely focused on getting ready for the season and wants to take his game to a completely different level and help the Nuggets win at the highest level. Tim and I will continue to have conversations on our end.”

In a Tweet offering supplemental reporting, Mike Singer indicated that "there's optimism, and maybe even momentum."
