Karen Davidson's Frustration Grows As Sales Of Pistons Drags On

Mar 31, 2011 12:17 PM

Despite reports that a deal to sell the Detroit Pistons to billionaire Tom Gores was near completion, some close to the negotiators say that no agreement is imminent.

After two months of exclusive negotiation between Gores and Karen Davidson, widow of long-time Piston's owner Bill Davidson, one source close to Davidson said that she feels as though she has lost control of the process, causing her to feel frustration and fatigue.

Part of her concern is that Gores continually requires more information, yet too few details of the agreement are in place.

Sale Of Pistons Nearing Completion

Mar 30, 2011 2:25 AM

CBS Sports Ken Berger reports that negotiations to sell the Detroit Pistons to billionaire Tom Gores are far enough along that the matter is expected to be brought up at the league's Board of Governors meeting April 14-15 in New York.

Gores has been negotiating with Pistons owner Karen Davidson for some time.

League approval will come as a welcome relief to the Pistons' basketball operations department who have been virtually paralyzed awaiting sale of the team. Detroit is the only team in the league that hasn't completed a single transaction this season.

Hamilton: 'Lack Of Communication Put Everybody On Pins And Needles'

Mar 27, 2011 1:32 PM

Richard Hamilton has played his best basketball in some time since working his way back into the starting lineup for the Detroit Pistons.

His scoring numbers are up. He is shooting the ball well. His turnover numbers, for the most part, are down. But the most impressive thing about his recent play is his energy on the court on both ends of the floor.

Hamilton struggled at times throughout the season and ended up on the bench for a long spell. But he and Kuester cleared the air during a meeting late in February, and Hamilton has played well since returning to the starting lineup on March 1.

"We just went through a period of time where we didn't talk," Hamilton said. "And I think the lack of communication kind of put everybody on pins and needles. It was important that we came together knowing where both of us stand."

Kuester Pleased With Veteran Starting Lineup

Mar 17, 2011 2:49 AM

Using their 18th different lineup of the season, the Detroit Pistons coasted to a 107-93 victory over the Toronto Raptors Wednesday, ending a three-game losing streak.

Coach John Kuester basically went back to his veterans, starting Tracy McGrady, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Ben Wallace and Greg Monroe. Wallace hadn't played since February 23.

"He practiced well, that was the reason," Kuester said. "Our veterans right now, they've worked awfully hard in these last two practices. They've had a history of not going as hard as they have the last couple of days. I'm very pleased."

"I think we will start (Wednesday's) lineup next game," Kuester said, although Hamilton's status is in doubt for Friday's game against the Knicks due to the death of his grandfather.

Pistons Don't Expect Jerebko To Return From Achilles Injury This Season

Mar 16, 2011 7:55 PM

Jonas Jerebko is unlikely to return from his Achilles tendon injury this season.

“This kid – I've been in the business for 20 years – I've never seen a kid work so hard to try to get back,” Kuester said. “It's killing him. It's killing him. This young man is working extremely hard to put himself in a position to play."

Jerebko has been working with strength and conditioning coach Arnie Kander throughout the season after tearing his Achilles tendon Oct. 5 in the preseason opener.

“It's good to have people notice it because I'm in there when nobody's there, when nobody sees me work out,” Jerebko said. “It just feels good that they see it. I'm glad that they notice.

“I don't want anybody to outwork me or for Arnie to say, 'He didn't work hard enough -- that's why he didn't play this year.' I'm just going at it every day until he says stop.”

McGrady Reaches Out To Jeff Van Gundy About Practice Comments

Mar 16, 2011 2:38 PM

Tracy McGrady doesn't believe he could have become a better player if he had worked harder.

“I just wasn’t a great practice player,’’ McGrady, a Detroit guard, said in an interview with HoopsHype. “I just wasn’t. I wasn’t.’’

McGrady was brought up by Jeff Van Gundy at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference as a player who was immensely talented, but didn't work hard in practice. McGrady doesn't deny his natural talent impacted how he practiced.

“That could be it,’’ McGrady said. “I just think I could cruise through practice and still be effective. Some guys have to really go (all) out to really have an impact on practice. My ability was just I had God-given talent to where I could just cruise through practice and still be an effective practice player… I was inconsistent. Some days, I have really good (practice) days where I just go hard and a lot of days where like, ‘Uh,’ and I just go through the motions. But I work hard. But I’m just not the best practice player.’’

McGrady’s contention is he worked hard individually, if not in practice, to become a star and someone who still could land in the Hall of Fame. But Van Gundy and Morey were critical of his overall work ethic.

“Tracy McGrady was 1,000 hours of practice,’’ Van Gundy, now an NBA analyst for ABC and ESPN, said sarcastically at the conference. “He should be a Hall of Fame player. His talent was other-worldly. He was given a great leg up in the race against other players. He’s as close as I’ve ever seen to someone with a perfect body and a good mind… I just wish I could have changed his practice habits and his mentality.’’’

McGrady said he reached out to Van Gundy after learning about his remarks.

“I really took it as a compliment,’’ said McGrady. “And Jeff and I talk to this day. I actually talked to him after that. I sent him a text message. I was like, ‘Damn, I heard you were killing me in the media.’ And he was like, ‘No, no.’ But I was just giving him (junk).’’

T-Mac Rooting For Kentucky In Tournament

Mar 15, 2011 3:37 PM

Tracy McGrady didn't play college basketball going straight to the NBA out of high school.

“If I was going to go to college, I was going to go to Kentucky,” he said. “So that's the team I root for throughout this time of the season.”

British Basketball Teams Will Compete In Olympics

Mar 14, 2011 2:52 PM

Basketball’s international ruling body, F.I.B.A. voted to include the British Men's and Women's basketball teams in the 2012 Olympics.

It’s usually nearly automatic for the host country to be awarded a spot in the Olympics, but the British teams had to prove they were worthy because of their weak competitive history.

“I’m really excited. We’re really happy to get it,” said Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng, who will be one of the biggest stars of the British Olympic team.  The Pistons guard Ben Gordon and former NBA player Pops Mensah-Bonsu are also expected to play for the British team.

McGrady 'Frustrated' Over Benching

Mar 8, 2011 3:25 PM

Tracy McGrady isn't happy about the benching he has endured with the Pistons.

He has been held out of five consecutive games.

“It's out of my control, man,” McGrady said. “I can't do anything. When the coach says he puts the guys out there he wants to play, I don't really like it. But it is what it is.

“I can't do anything about it but come in here and practice and wait until I get my number called. It's frustrating. It's really frustrating.”

He's been sidelined since Feb. 25, when he and six teammates didn't show up for a morning shootaround in Philadelphia.

Team sources described it as a boycott aimed at coach John Kuester, but McGrady said he had a headache.
