Baron On Playoffs: "We're Fooling Ourselves"

Jan 31, 2007 9:48 AM

The Warriors were embarrassed on Tuesday night with a 124-97 loss at Cleveland. To add insult to injury, the Cavaliers were playing without LeBron James.

"We've got the worst road record of any team in the NBA, so who are we fooling, man? Who are we fooling?" Baron Davis said of the Warriors' postseason hopes. "How are we going to be a playoff team (when) we can't win on the road?

"We're fooling ourselves."

Monta Ellis Sprains Ankle And Is Day-To-Day

Jan 31, 2007 6:49 AM

Guard Monta Ellis sprained his right ankle in the final minutes of the Warriors' 124-97 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He limped off the court with 5:38 left in the fourth quarter, and the Warriors down 24 points. After the game, he was on crutches, his right foot trapped in a boot.

X-rays were negative. Ellis said his status for tonight's game depends on how he feels this morning. He is officially listed as day-to-day.

"It's painful, but I'll be all right," Ellis said.

Jan 26, 2007 10:39 AM

Chris Mullin was ready to deal Mike Dunleavy and Troy Murphy over the summer, but Don Nelson wanted to take a look at them because he thought that the two players might be able to play effectively in his system.

``I had a little more feeling about the way our team was, and Nellie wanted to look at it,'' Mullin said. ``That was something we talked about together.''

Clippers Hand Nets Third Straight One Point Loss

Jan 26, 2007 5:55 AM

The third time wasn't the charm for the New Jersey Nets, who will be haunted all season by a bizarre stretch of one-point defeats on this California trip.

Cuttino Mobley made a 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds left on the clock, lifting the Los Angeles Clippers to a 102-101 victory over New Jersey on Thursday night. The Nets were beaten Monday at Sacramento by a jumper by Mike Bibby with 10.3 seconds remaining, then at the buzzer on a 17-footer by Golden State's Monta Ellis on Wednesday.

"In this league, you've got to expect anything and everything," Jason Kidd said. "We've put ourselves in a position to win, and we've come up short by a point in the last three games. It's not like we're getting blasted by 20 and you're searching for what we need to do. For us, it's just been the last 30 seconds and the ball hasn't bounced our way."

O'Bryant Is Unlikely To Return This Season

Jan 25, 2007 9:23 AM

It appears that Warriors center Patrick O'Bryant's rookie NBA season has reached an early end.

Warriors Coach Don Nelson indicated Wednesday that O'Bryant, the ninth overall pick last summer, probably would not be recalled from his assignment with the Bakersfield Jam before the NBA Development League season concludes April 14. Golden State would have three regular-season games remaining at that point.

O'Bryant, the only NBA lottery selection to receive the D-League treatment, is averaging 6.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in seven games with the Jam but has fouled out twice and shot just 40 percent.

``I told him if he goes down to the D-League and isn't a dominant player, there should be red flags all over the place, and he should be the first to notice,'' Nelson said.

``He's not only not dominating, he's not playing very well. He's a long-term project. I really liked him the first week of training camp, but I assumed there would be great progress. He hasn't gotten better one bit.

``I'd like to go to dinner with him, but I wouldn't like to put him in the game I'm coaching.''

Ellis' Buzzer-Beater Stops Warriors' Slide

Jan 25, 2007 2:39 AM

Baron Davis had three choices on the final fast break: a difficult drive to the basket, a risky alley-oop to Al Harrington, or an easy pass to Monta Ellis for an open jumper.

The veteran point guard went with choice No. 3, and Ellis buried a shot that stopped the Warriors' slide.

Ellis hit a 17-foot jumper at the buzzer, and the Warriors rallied from an 11-point deficit in the final 4 1/2 minutes to stun the Nets, 110-109 on Wednesday night.

Jackson's Court Date Could Lead To Immediate Jail Time

Jan 24, 2007 6:36 AM

When Stephen Jackson, acquired by Golden State from the Indiana Pacers last week, appears in a Rochester Hills, Mich. courtroom on Friday, there is a chance that he could be immediately incarcerated for 93 days.

Even worse, if he's convicted of the three charges he faces in Indianapolis stemming from an early-morning Oct. 6 incident at an establishment called Club Rio, Jackson faces up to five more years of imprisonment.

"I worry about what I can control," Jackson said. "And the only thing I can control right now is living my life the right way and playing basketball."

Jackson's court appearance this week deals with the probation he's served since pleading no contest in September 2005 to misdemeanor assault charges from the infamous brawl between the Pacers and the Detroit Pistons in November 2004. Jackson went into the crowd after teammate Ron Artest and become involved in a melee with fans.

Originally, Friday's hearing was supposed to deal with some disputed medical costs for one of the fans involved in the brawl. But the Club Rio incident opened up whole new avenues.

"It's conceivable that he could be missing some games," said Paul Walton, the Oakland County prosecutor in charge of the case.
