Klay Thompson Open To Short-Term Deal With Warriors

Feb 29, 2024 1:48 PM

Klay Thompson is eligible for a four-year contract worth up to $223 million, but he is open to re-signing with the Golden State Warriors on a shorter deal. A source told ESPN's Kendra Andrews that money and lineup status are not driving forces for Thompson.

Thompson could possibly sign a two-year deal this summer to align with the remaining time on the contracts of Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr.

Thompson is making $43 million his season on an expiring contract. When Thompson and the Warriors discussed an extension last summer, talks never progressed to specific dollar amounts and instead a range was presented by the Warriors.

Thompson has been candid about his on-court struggles and a source close to him says his frustrations are more about his own level of play and less about the team itself.

"He feels like he's letting everyone down," the source told ESPN. "He doesn't want to be a drain. He wants to help. He wants to feel valuable."

Thompson recently moved to the bench and responded with one of his best ames of the season. Thompson has shot 45 percent on three-pointers during his first five games as a reserve.

"The thought of him coming off the bench as our flame thrower, it's a pretty powerful weapon," Steve Kerr said.

Thompson, however, was very upset when he was informed of the decision from the Warriors to move him out of the starting lineup. Kerr told ESPN that Thompson initially yelled at him and some of the assistants. Thompson later came back to apologize to the coaches.

"It was not an easy conversation," Kerr said. "This is maybe the hardest part about getting further away from our prime. It's just, after 12 years [of Thompson starting], it wasn't easy.

"And still moving forward, it's not going to be easy. But I told him, 'If you really embrace it, you can help your team win.'"

Most Olympics Roster Spots Already Targeted For Team USA

Feb 29, 2024 8:16 AM

Team USA has ramped up the selection process for this summer's Olympics in Paris. There are 11 players that the United States are counting on playing or are in strong consideration for a roster spot. The initial 11 are:

  • Bam Adebayo - Miami Heat
  • Devin Booker - Phoenix Suns
  • Stephen Curry - Golden State Warriors
  • Anthony Davis - Los Angeles Lakers
  • Kevin Durant - Phoenix Suns
  • Anthony Edwards - Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Joel Embiid - Philadelphia 76ers
  • Tyrese Haliburton - Indiana Pacers
  • Jrue Holiday - Boston Celtics
  • LeBron James - Los Angeles Lakers
  • Jayson Tatum - Boston Celtics

None of these players are considered absolute locks as of yet. But all 11 are under strong consideration and have mentioned interest in representing Team USA this summer, provided they are healthy enough to play.

Of that group, Booker, Curry, Durant, Embiid, Holiday, James and Tatum are considered to be the United States core group. Edwards and Haliburton are being considered after strong play at last summer's FIBA World Cup. Adebayo and Davis are garnering interest for additional frontcourt depth around Embiid.

Andrew Wiggins Leaves Warriors Due To Personal Reasons, Out On Thursday

Feb 29, 2024 12:55 AM

Andrew Wiggins left the Golden State Warriors before the start of their most recent road trip due to a family matter.

The Warriors have no timeline for Wiggins' return, but he will be out for Thursday's game against the Knicks.

“We don’t know. We’ll respect Andrew’s wishes for this to remain private. Personal reasons," said Steve Kerr.

Chris Paul To Return To Warriors Lineup On Tuesday

Feb 27, 2024 1:10 AM

Chris Paul is set to make his return to the Golden State Warriors lineup on Tuesday.

Paul has not played since fracturing his hand on January 5.

"Chris will play all of the non-Steph minutes, and he'll be out there with Steph as well. It's easier for us to put Steph off the ball and take some of the wear and tear off of him when Chris is out there," said Steve Kerr.

Steve Kerr, Warriors Agree To Two-Year, $35M Extension

Feb 23, 2024 10:23 PM

Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors have agreed to a two-year, $35 million contract extension.

Kerr's deal makes him the highest paid coach in NBA history in terms of annual average at $17.5 million per year. Gregg Popovich makes more than Kerr on an annual basis, but he is also president of the San Antonio Spurs. Erik Spoelstra's eight-year deal pays him approximately $15 million per year.

The agreement completes months of talks between Golden State general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Kerr's representatives.

Kerr's extension aligns him with the two currently remaining seasons on the contract of Stephen Curry.

Joe Lacob: We Are Not Here To Be Just 'Some Team'

Feb 22, 2024 11:43 AM

The Golden State Warriors launched an improbable pursuit of LeBron James ahead of the trade deadline, which teams sources tell ESPN's Baxter Holmes represents the desire from Joe Lacob to keep the franchise as a contender.

"I'm not going to comment on something I can't comment on, but, in general, I just want to win," Lacob said. "We just want to win. We want to be the best, and we're going to try whatever tactic it takes to get there. I am not here to screw around. We are not here to screw around. We are not here to be just 'some team.' We're not going to do that. We may fail. Everyone fails. We may fail occasionally, but it will not be for lack of trying."

As the Warriors had a gap year in 19-20, they accumulated three lottery picks and a source says they had a "swing for the fences" approach in selecting high-ceiling players. The Warriors picked James Wiseman in 2020, and then Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody in 2021. This became Lacob's "two-timeline" approach.

"We could have drafted more ready players that maybe had a lower ceiling," Lacob tells ESPN. "We thought we had more time with our Big Three. How much more? We didn't know. And at what level? We weren't quite sure.

"Now, melding them in with the Big Three, that's where I think it got complicated."

Lacob had wanted the Warriors to follow the blueprint set by the San Antonio Spurs when they connected the Tim Duncan era with Kawhi Leonard.

"I think there was always a delusion in that building that they were the next Spurs," said one source close to the Warriors organization.

"I think [ownership] made a decision about four years ago that they were going to try and have it all, and it backfired," a former Warriors staffer said. "They probably should have focused on players that just fit with Steph versus trying for the home run swings."

Lacob believes the Warriors have an "ace in the hole" that will keep them immune from ever enduring an extended rebuild.

"It's the reason that I don't think we will ever, ever try to bottom out."

"We are the Golden State Warriors," Lacob said, referencing their status as a free agent destination. "I believe in the culture. I believe that word gets out. I could go on and on. I'm not trying to brag. I'm just saying, that's who we are.

"We're never going to bottom out. I won't settle for that. We're not doing that."

Chris Paul Close To Returning

Feb 22, 2024 9:02 AM

Golden State Warriors guard Chris Paul is closing in on a return to the court. Paul won't play in the team's first game back from the All-Star break, but Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Paul is "close".

The veteran guard has missed Golden State's last 18 games after suffering a fracture in his left hand. Paul is now back to 5-on-5 work, but the Warriors staff wants to make sure his conditioning is where it needs to be before he returns.

The Golden State Warriors have converted Lester Quinones from a Two-Way contract to a standard NBA contract.

The upgrade to a standard contract for the rest of the NBA season gives the sides a chance to negotiate a new multiyear deal in the offseason.

Quinones was undrafted out of Memphis in 2022 and has spent parts of two seasons with the Warriors and their G League affiliate in Santa Cruz.

Bulls Gave 'Real Consideration' To Trade Of Alex Caruso To Warriors

Feb 20, 2024 3:07 PM

The Chicago Bulls gave "real consideration" to a trade of Alex Caruso to the Golden State Warriors ahead of the deadline, sources tell Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

The Bulls had maintained for weeks that they wouldn't trade Caruso, who is signed next season on a $9.89 million deal. Caruso is one of the league's best perimeter defenders and is hooting 40.1 percent on three-pointers this season.

Caruso is represented by Greg Lawrence of Wasserman.

The Warriors also reached out to the Los Angeles Lakers on a trade for LeBron James.
