Rick Carlisle May Have Viewed Jamahl Mosley's Luka Doncic Relationship As 'Threat To Him'

Jun 25, 2021 8:05 AM

Rick Carlisle endorsed Jason Kidd for the head coaching job of the Dallas Mavericks upon his hiring with the Indiana Pacers, which indirectly was an omission for his assistant coach Jamahl Mosley.

"Let me be delicate in my wording here," said Tim MacMahon on The Hoop Collective Podcast. "I think Rick understood the perception of how that might impact who he didn't endorse."

"Right, that's what I was getting at," replied Tim Bontemps.

"Screw it, I'm going to stop being delicate. I think it got to a point where Rick perceived Jamahl Mosley's close relationship with Luka Doncic as a threat to him. I don't think those guys will necessarily send each other Christmas cards. And look, who's right? Who's wrong? Whatever. I do know this: players I've talked to... Luka's not the only guy on that team who is extremely close to Jamahl Mosley. [He's] developed great relationships with players throughout his career."

Rick Carlisle Agrees To Become Head Coach Of Pacers

Jun 24, 2021 11:39 AM

The Indiana Pacers have agreed to hire Rick Carlisle as head coach on a four-year, $29 million contract.

Carlisle stepped down last week as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. Carlisle had also been linked with the Milwaukee Bucks should they decide to make a change from Mike Budenholzer, which became less likely with the team advancing to the Western Conference Finals.

Carlisle was previously head coach of the Pacers from 2003 until 2007.

The Pacers fired Nate Bjorkgren this offseason after one season as head coach.

Kevin Pritchard Assured He'll Remain As GM Of Pacers

Jun 18, 2021 8:01 AM

The Indiana Pacers had a disappointing 20-21 season in which they fired Nate Bjorkgren as head coach after one season, but Kevin Pritchard will remain in his role running the front office.

"Let me say a few things about Indiana," said Brian Windhorst. "One, I know Kevin Pritchard, their general manager, came out and gave a press conference and made it sound like his future was in some sort of doubt there. That is no longer the case. He has been assured he will be there. I don't think he was ever really in danger. Herb Simon, who is the owner of the team, is extremely close to him. They have an extremely close relationship. It doesn't mean they couldn't make a change. Without going too far, I will say Kevin Pritchard has been assured he's going to be there."

The Pacers are not planning on hiring a first time head coach during this cycle and have now been linked with possibly hiring Rick Carlisle.

"I don't know how much longer Kevin Pritchard wants to be in that job," added Windhorst.

Rick Carlisle Connected To Head Coaching Jobs With Bucks, Pacers

Jun 18, 2021 7:57 AM

Rick Carlisle abruptly stepped down as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday and he's emerged as one of the top available candidates for current vacancies. There could also be an additional vacancy involving Mike Budenholzer and the Milwaukee Bucks should they not advance to at least the Eastern Conference Finals.

"Reading the tea leaves, there's a couple things there," said Tim MacMahon on The Hoop Collective. "Number one, I do think that Rick realized just how hot his seat would be to start next season. I'm half kidding I say I thought he'd be fired by Christmas, but he resigned by Father's Day instead.

"How fast is he going to have another job?" asked Brian Windhorst. "Is he going to have another job by Independence Day?"

"That's number two," continued MacMahon. "I know Rick Carlisle very well. He's obviously an extremely intelligent man. He's a planner. He's a plotter. He's a pilot. Rick's plane has a parachute. If he wants to hit a button, it has a parachute. Rick ain't going up in the air without a parachute. He's not jumping off the plane unless he has a really sturdy parachute... Read the statement Rick gave to [Adrian Wojnarowski]... He has something lined up.

"There's two destination that are heavily rumored. The first you just mentioned is the Bucks. If Bud goes, Rick moved in there would immediately allow him to take over a championship contending team."

"There's a lot of smoke about a potential Rick Carlisle reunion with the Pacers," said MacMahon. MacMahon indicated that he hasn't heard that rumor from anyone directly involved. Carlisle was head coach of the Pacers from 2003 until 2007.
