Explaining Why Bucks Didn't Give QO To Villanueva

Jun 30, 2009 12:10 AM

The Bucks front office conducted at least two dozen discussions on whether or not to extend a qualifying offer to Charlie Vllanueva, a person with knowledge of the situation said.

The person said matching Villanueva's offers as a restricted free agent, or possibly keeping him on the one-year tender for about $4.7 million would have eliminated the flexibility general manager John Hammond had just achieved by trading Richard Jefferson, who was due $29.2 million over the next two seasons.

Bucks Let Villanueva Become UFA

Jun 29, 2009 4:50 PM

The Milwaukee Bucks decided against a qualifying offer to Charlie Villanueva, making him an unrestricted free agent.

The Bucks did make qualifying offers to Ramon Sessions and Ersan Ilysova which means the Bucks can match any offer from another team.

Villanueva averaged 16.2 points per game and 6.7 rebounds per game in 2008-2009.

Bucks General Manager John Hammond chose not to discuss on his decision to make Villanueva a free agent.

NBA teams have until Tuesday to make qualifying offers to their free agents.

"Well, I would like to thank my Milwaukee fans, for three great years, and Senator Kohl, but my journey in Milwaukee has come to a end," wrote Villanueva on his Twitter page.

One of the more overlooked acquisitions of draft week was the trade that sent Amir Johnson to Milwaukee.

Bucks general manager John Hammond was in Detroit when the club drafted Johnson.

"It's a new start for me," Johnson said. "I felt like I got drafted coming here. I'm ready to get out there and improve myself and play for the Bucks."

Bucks Extend Qualifying Offer To Sessions

Jun 27, 2009 5:51 PM

The Bucks have extended a qualifying offer to point guard Ramon Sessions.

The qualifying offer is worth a little more than $1 million.

"We expected them to do that," said agent James 'Chubby' Wells, the point guard's agent. "Now, we'll have to see how the rest of this turns out."

Sessions will become a restricted free agent on July 1, but with the qualifying offer, the Bucks retain the right to match any offer he receives.

Jennings: I'm More NBA Ready Than Most

Jun 26, 2009 7:49 AM

Bucks rookie Brandon Jennings, who played in Italy for one season instead of attending college, believes that he is better prepared for the NBA.

"The experience I have gotten over there, you can't complain with that," Jennings said. "I'm not really a rookie, but I am a rookie in the NBA. This is really my second year as a pro.

"I think I'm ready. I'm more ready than a lot of these other players. A lot of these other players have a lot to learn with the pro game, but I think I've got it down a little bit."

Richard Jefferson To The Spurs?

Jun 23, 2009 1:16 PM

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports is reporting the San Antonio Spurs and Milwaukee Bucks are in serious trade discussions involving forward Richard Jefferson.

The deal would send Jefferson to San Antonio in exchange for Bruce Bowen, Fabricio Oberto, and Kurt Thomas.

If the trade is consummated, the Bucks would save money since Bowen and Oberto's contracts are partially guaranteed.

Bucks management publicly stated they would like to being "frugal" this off-season but would also like to re-sign guard Ramon Sessions and forward Charlie Villanueva.

Bucks Will Draft Best Available Player

Jun 19, 2009 4:36 PM

Bucks general manager John Hammond said on Thursday that the club isn't "married" to drafting a player at a certain position.

Milwaukee has the 10th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft.

"We'll take the best player, in our eyes," Hammond said. "We're not married to a position to that extent. And it wouldn't have to necessarily be a point guard or a power forward. If it were a wing player or any other position, I think we still might have to say, this is the best player and we take the best player and deal with it accordingly."

The Bucks could lose power forward Charlie Villanueva and point guard Ramon Sessions via free agency, but Hammond won't necessarily look at just those positions.

"When we look at the draft, I don't think we have to look at our issues regarding our free agency as much as to say going in that we're going to take the best player on the board and then secondarily the need," Hammond added. "With this draft, just by chance, (our pick could be) one of those positions, maybe the power forward or point-guard spot. But at the end of the day, I think we're probably going to end up taking with the 10th pick the best player on the board. And, it could fill a need for us, too."
