Knicks Will Have Early Bird Rights On Trey Burke In 2019

Mar 29, 2018 10:34 AM

The New York Knicks will have Early Bird Rights on Trey Burke in 2019, which will allow them to go over the cap to re-sign him to a deal worth 105 percent greater than the average salary of 18-19 for up to four seasons.

The average salary for 16-17 was $7.8 million.

The Knicks will have Burke on a cap hold of just $1.6 million during the 2019 offseason, which will be significant for them as they're expected to be active in free agency.

Burke has played well for the Knicks since being brought up from the G League.

Knicks Expected To Target Doc Rivers, Mark Jackson

Mar 27, 2018 3:57 PM

Many around the NBA do not expect the New York Knicks to retain Jeff Hornacek this offseason.

Hornacek was hired by Phil Jackson while the Knicks are now run by Steve Mills and Scott Perry.

Doc Rivers and Mark Jackson are expected to be targeted by the Knicks. Jackson was fired by the Warriors in 2014 and has since worked in broadcasting.

There have also been reports that David Blatt could be a candidate as he has a close relationship with Mills.

Kristaps Porzingis Cursed Out Jeff Hornacek During Practice Last Season

Mar 27, 2018 3:50 PM

Kristaps Porzingis cursed out Jeff Hornacek during a practice late last season, according to a source. Porzingis reportedly used the F-word.

The incident likely contributed to why Porzingis skipped his exit meeting last offseason.

At the time, the main factors cited for Porzingis' no-show was his displeasure with Phil Jackson and the treatment of Carmelo Anthony.

Hornacek has also been on the receiving end of profanities from Joakim Noah and Kyle O'Quinn.

Kyle O'Quinn Admits Yelling At Jeff Hornacek Was Wrong Reaction

Mar 26, 2018 10:48 AM

Kyle O'Quinn said he was wrong in yelling at Jeff Hornacek during Friday's game.

"I'd be the first one to say that my wrong reaction was the wrong one. I shouldn't have come back. Just because somebody is yelling at me, I shouldn't yell back. Two wrongs don't make a right," O'Quinn said in Washington D.C., according to published reports.

Cameras showed O'Quinn yelling obscenities at Hornacek after he admonished O'Quinn for failing to defend Karl-Anthony Towns on the perimeter Friday.

"It was over as soon as the time out was," Hornacek said. "That happens sometimes with teams and guys want to win. That's that."

O'Quinn said he didn't apologize to Hornacek.

"Two grown men respect each other in our own right,'' O'Quinn said. "I would never disrespect a coach to the point we have to hash it out the next year. It sucks it was on TV. The camera was in my mouth. In training camp, practice, there's a lot more said behind closed doors when you don't have to speak about it the next day.''

Jeff Hornacek: Knicks Need More Size On Wings

Mar 21, 2018 3:48 PM

Jeff Hornacek believes the Knicks need more size on the wings.

The Knicks traded away Carmelo Anthony in September and have relied on traditional shooting guards like Tim Hardaway Jr. and Courtney Lee to play bigger.

“If you look around at the top teams in the league, they have multiple guys in the 6-7, 6-8 range with length,” Hornacek said. “We have a lot of guys in the 6-5ish range. [We] just got to get bigger at some of those spots. … You talk about that 6-7, 6-8 guy, everybody in the league wants that guy. You don’t see those guys all over the place.’’

Hardaway said he's monitoring how the Knicks address the issue in the offseason.

“I haven’t played the 3 ever — the first time playing it for the whole year,” Hardaway said. “You go against strong guys — LeBron [James], KD [Kevin Durant], those are very hard matchups for a guy who is 6-6. It was a learning experience. You have to learn to choose your battles and use your size to your advantage. I got to watch the offseason to see how everything plays out for us.’’

“You can do it that way, but sometimes it’s tough on a young guy like Tim, who’s probably a natural 2 to have to play the 3 all year,’’ Hornacek said. “He took that challenge and did pretty well. Those two guys were able to do it, but it’s not like [GM] Scott [Perry] said [after the Anthony trade], this is our roster, let’s win a championship. It was the understanding, ‘Let’s play who we have with the talent and as years go on, you fill in different spots and go that route.”

The Knicks have experimented with using Frank Ntilikina at shooting guard.

“It creates a bigger jam,’’ Hornacek said. “With Frank able to move to the 2, it creates some problems there but it allows us to play two [point guards] together sometimes.’’

Knicks Likely To Stretch Joakim Noah After Sept. 1st

Mar 20, 2018 12:48 PM

Jeff Hornacek was asked on Monday about the status of Joakim Noah and when his situation may be resolved.

“I’m not sure,” Hornacek said. “In the summer, Scott [Perry, the general manager] and Steve [Mills, the team president] will be talking with him. I guess that’s how it will get resolved.”

The Knicks attempted to trade Noah at the deadline after his confrontation during a January practice with Hornacek.

New York is most likely to stretch and waive Noah after September 1st to create additional 2019 cap space if they're unable to trade him in July. Noah is signed through 19-20 and stretching him at that point would spread that season's salary of $19.3 million over three years.

Knicks View Frank Ntilikina As Better Fit At Shooting Guard

Mar 3, 2018 1:09 PM

The New York Knicks now view Frank Ntilikina as more of a shooting guard and less of a point guard.

Ntilikina isn't quick enough with his dribble at this stage of his development to play point guard, which limits his playmaking abilities.

Ntilikina does have enough length to allow him to defend shooting guards.

Ntilikina said he’s been watching film of one of the best shooting guards currently in the NBA, Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan.

“I’m learning every day,” Ntilikina said recently. “I want to bring everything to the team. Either on the point-guard position or the 2 position. If coach wanted me to play the 5, I would have to eat, obviously.”

Knicks To Sign Troy Williams To 2nd 10-Day Contract

Mar 3, 2018 12:44 PM

The New York Knicks will sign Troy Williams to a second 10-day contract.

“He’s played well for us,” Jeff Hornacek said. “It’s that activity. His athleticism and length. He covers ground. I can’t speak for Scott [Perry, the general manager] and all that, but he’s probably done enough to earn that.”

Williams has averaged 8.0 points and 2.5 rebounds in 12.4 minutes per game with the Knicks.

Williams was previously with the Rockets.
