NBA Upholds Dwight Howard's 15th Technical Foul

Feb 28, 2011 8:49 PM

After reviewing the play, the NBA has determined that Dwight Howard's 15th technical foul will stand as called. If Dwight garners a 16th technical during the regular season that is not rescinded, he will be suspended for one game, with further suspensions coming on every second technical thereafter.

The foul in question occurred with 5:01 left in the second quarter of Orlando's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Howard already has received a total of $45,000 in fines for his 15 technicals, and each additional technical would earn him a $5,000 fine.

Why Howard Is Eligible For Extension Now And Deron Must Wait Until July

Feb 23, 2011 1:02 PM

Deron Williams does not become eligible for a contract extension until July, which is the three-year anniversary of his previous extension from July 18th, 2008.

Dwight Howard is also a potential member of the 2012 free agency class and is eligible to sign an extension now because he signed his in 2007. Howard first became eligible to sign an extension on July 12, 2010.

Chris Paul signed his previous extension on July 9, 2008, so he must also wait until July to sign an extension.

Williams and Paul must also wait until a new collective bargaining agreement is complete before an extension can be reached.

Howard Could Lose $10M If He Doesn't Sign Extension

Feb 20, 2011 5:13 PM

Dwight Howard is now eligible to sign a two-year, $42.56 million extension with the Magic that would take him through the 2014-15 season.

Howard signed a five-year, $82.55 million extension July 12, 2007 that kicked in for the 2008-09 season.

He can opt out of that deal and become a free agent in the summer of 2012.

However, Howard has been eligible to sign an extension with the Magic since July 12, 2010. That was the first allowed day due to it being the three-year anniversary of when he had signed previously.

"Since the third anniversary of signing his extension has passed, he is eligible to extend,'' an NBA official confirmed in an e-mail to FanHouse on Saturday night about Howard, who could lose more than $10 million if he doesn't sign an extension by the June 30 expiration of the collective bargaining agreement and a new CBA seriously curtails salaries.

Told by FanHouse on Friday during All-Star Weekend about the rule that has allowed him to be eligible to sign an extension since last summer, Howard disagreed with that.

When asked if he's sure he's not now eligible for an extension, Howard said, "Positive.''

Howard Deflects Question About Joining Lakers In 2012

Feb 18, 2011 10:29 PM

During media availability on Friday of All-Star Weekend, Dwight Howard was asked about the possibility of becoming a member of the Lakers when he becomes a free agent in the summer of 2012.

"As of right now, I’m in Orlando and that’s the only thing on my mind, is getting our team back to the Finals,” responded Howard.

Later on, Dwight added that he has not "thought about what’s going to happen two years from now. I want to win a championship in Orlando and I want to do my best to try to get one there.”

Howard's current contract has an Early Termination Option for 2012, meaning that he could either become a free agent that summer or play the 2012-2013 under his current contract with the Magic.
