Otis Smith: No Moves Imminent For Magic

Jan 31, 2012 10:29 AM

Magic general manager Otis Smith indicated Monday that he has no plans to make a major move to alter his team's roster in the near future.

"If a string of losses causes you to change your plans, then I'm in the wrong job," Smith said Monday night, before the Magic fell 74-69 to the Philadelphia 76ers to lose their fourth consecutive game.

"I think you look at your team as a whole and understand that we have to fight through whatever we have to fight through and you continue to evaluate everything top to bottom. That's what you do. When it's time to make a change, you make a change."

Smith generally does not like to make trades in-season, but he did so last season after the Magic lost five of six games from Dec. 4-14, 2010.

Redick Admits Howard Trade Demand Affecting Magic

Jan 31, 2012 10:28 AM

J.J. Redick admitted that Dwight Howard’s trade demand has affected the Magic’s locker room dynamic.

“It is,” Redick said. “Yeah, it is. I’ve said since the beginning: As long as he’s here, it will be a distraction because it’s all anybody talks about when they talk about our team. We don’t hear it? Of course we do.

“But we also have to be professionals, do our jobs, and for the first 15 games we did that. And I don’t think that Dwight’s trade situation made us play so badly these last few games.”

The Magic have lost five of their past six games.

“Chemistry is a very fragile thing, the team dynamic of how guys rely on each other, how guys trust each other,” Redick said. “All that stuff is very fragile. Those Boston losses may have had an impact on us, but we’ve got to get over that and get on with the season.”

Dwight Disputes Adidas Angle To Chicago Trade

Jan 30, 2012 10:01 AM

Dwight Howard was recently approached about his perceived unwillingness to play with Derrick Rose and the Bulls.

"If I could play with Derrick right now and God wanted that to happen, it will happen," Howard told the Tribune. "It has nothing to do with me not wanting to play with Derrick Rose. I love him. That's my brother.''

Howard said their status as Adidas athletes is not a factor.

"It has nothing to do with Adidas," Howard said. "In fact, Adidas would love that because me and Derrick have the same guy."

Howard Rips Teammates For Lack Of Effort

Jan 28, 2012 11:57 AM

Magic star Dwight Howard says if his teammates should stay home or in the lockeroom if they don’t want to play hard.

Howard was frustrated and disgusted with his team’s play after a 93-67 loss to the hapless New Orleans Hornets on Friday night, the Magic’s third loss in four games.

“Looked like guys didn’t want to play,” he said. “I told them at halftime, if you don’t want to play, just stay in the lockerroom. It doesn’t make sense for a teams we should beat to just demolish us.

“You bring everything down,” Howard said, referring to a player who isn’t playing with heart and soul.

“It hurts me to get out there and play your hardest. I expect everybody to play the same. I’m not calling anybody out by no means because we all have to get better … but if you don’t want to be out there, don’t dress up.

“If you don’t want to play, stay home. People work too hard. I want to win a championship. I work too hard every night for anybody to not want to go out there and play hard. … None of the — whatever, trade stuff — none of that stuff matters. Play basketball. That’s why we all get paid to do this, because we love the game and it’s basketball, so why not give it your all.”

Howard Says Magic Have To Change After Blowing 27-Point Lead To Celtics

Jan 27, 2012 10:17 AM

Dwight Howard intimated that teammates didn’t stick to their roles in Thursday night’s loss to Boston, in which the Magic lost a 27-point lead.

“We didn’t play the right way and we have to change,” he said.

“Everybody just can’t come down (the floor) and feel like they have to take the game over. You just have to play team-ball and play the way we want to play. We didn’t do that.”

Howard said the team let down after racing to a big lead.

“We thought it was going to be easy after the first two quarters,” Howard said. “We can’t allow that. We have to change.”

Howard Open To Signing With Celtics

Jan 26, 2012 10:12 AM

Dwight Howard might be interested in signing with the Celtics this summer.

“Always. Always,” Howard said. “I’d always listen to a team like that.”

Howard said his primary goal is to win a championship.

“My thing is I want to win,” Howard said. “It’s not something like I’m doing this for money. I win. I want to do it my way.

“The first thing is basketball. I want to win a championship, and it takes a certain type of team to win a championship. You know, there’s a lot of teams who are great during the regular season. They play well, but it’s different once you play in those playoffs, you know? It’s gut-check time.

“Like I told the Magic, I just want to win. I don’t want a team that doesn’t know how you have to win in the playoffs. I want a team that’s going to go out every night and forget about stats, forget about who scores the most points or who is the fan favorite. Just go out and play, play for each other and play to win. That’s the only thing.”

Magic Unlikely To Extend Ryan Anderson

Jan 25, 2012 10:24 AM

Otis Smith indicated Tuesday that it is unlikely the Magic will extend the contract of Ryan Anderson before Wednesday night's 11:59 EST deadline for members of the 2008 draft class.

Anderson is on course to become a restricted free agent in July, and the Magic would have the opportunity to match any offer sheet that Anderson could sign with another team.

"The fact of the matter is that there are very few guys that get extended contracts like that coming off rookie deals," Smith said.

"We like Ryan. We'd like to keep him on our team. Quite honestly, we still have the right of first refusal because he'd be a restricted free agent. It could backfire, and we could have to pay more. But that's the risk we've chosen to take."

Magic Decline 12-13 Option On Daniel Orton

Jan 24, 2012 9:46 PM

The Magic have decided not exercise their team option on Daniel Orton for the 2012-13 season.

Orton will become an unrestricted free agent in July.

"You have to look at the whole body of work and look at where we are," Otis Smith said on Tuesday.

"It's nothing against Daniel. He's done what he's supposed to do. He's gotten himself in good shape. He's worked his tail off. It's nothing against him at all. It's just the way everything fell this year."

"I haven't done anything on the court to prove that I can play or anything, so I understand why they did it," Orton said. "But I don't understand a lot of things, such as why I didn't get a chance maybe to showcase what I have."

"The kid's healthy, so that's not an issue," said Orton's agent, Ara Vartanian. "I just don't know why you would have a player and not give him a chance to show what he can do or even get someone in return who has some value."

The Magic still could re-sign Orton when he becomes a free agent in July.

Orton was eligible to earn $1,182,600 if the Magic had exercised their option for 12-13.
