Spurs To Sign Alize Johnson, Waive Jordan Hall

Nov 29, 2022 9:03 AM

The San Antonio Spurs are signing Alize Johnson to a one-year deal. San Antonio will waive Jordan Hall from his non-guaranteed contract to create the roster spot for Johnson.

Johnson is a four-year NBA veteran, who waived by the Spurs at the end of the preseason. The 6-foot-7 forward has been playing for the Austin Spurs of the G League this season. In six games with Austin, Johnson has averaged 22.2 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

Hall played 82 minutes over nine games with San Antonio this season. The rookie wing has had two stints with the Spurs, first on a Two-Way contract, and a standard deal signed at the beginning of November.

Gregg Popovich Unexpectedly Misses Spurs Game Due To Illness

Nov 21, 2022 8:26 AM

Gregg Popovich met with the media ahead of the San Antonio Spurs game at the Los Angeles as usual. However, Popovich wasn't spotted on the floor with his team less than two hours later.

Brett Brown coached the Spurs throughout the game, as Popovich came down with an illness shorty before tipoff. Brown said postgame that he found out about 20 seconds before the game that he'd be leading the San Antonio sidelines.

Brown said Popovich was doing fine. Brown said he saw Popovich himself and then a Spurs spokesman confirmed Popovich didn't leave the arena, before declining further comment.

“At this stage I don’t have a lot of details," Brown said. "The doctors have checked him out and we’ve been advised that he’s fine.”

Therapist Settles Lawsuit With Joshua Primo, Spurs

Nov 17, 2022 3:44 PM

The therapist who alleged Joshua Primo exposed himself to her on multiple occasions while she worked for the San Antonio Spurs has settled her lawsuit against both parties.

Tony Buzbee said in a statement Thursday afternoon all parties "agreed to resolve this matter."

Hillary Cauthen accused Primo of wrongdoing during nine separate incidents.

Cauthen claimed in her suit that she complained about Primo's behavior to Spurs officials. Bexar County District Court records show Cauthen dropped her suit against the Spurs "with prejudice," which means she cannot refile it.

Primo was waived by the Spurs on Oct. 28.

RC Buford released the following statement in response to the lawsuit settlement:

"The situation regarding Josh Primo is a matter we take seriously. Since learning of the allegations, we have taken, and are taking, measures to ensure that all parties involved are treated with dignity and respect. We know we owe that to Dr. Cauthen, our players, our staff and our community.

"As an organization, we are continuously evaluating and refining our processes so they ultimately reflect the values and future of who we aspire to be every day. To that end, we have decided to collaborate with Dr. Cauthen and other experts in an effort to review and improve our workplaces processes and procedures.

"This is a learning opportunity for us, and one that we are certain will make us better moving forward."

Celtics Could Have Interest In Trading For Jakob Poeltl

Nov 16, 2022 11:07 AM

The Boston Celtics have a lack of depth at center, particularly with Robert Williams III out for several more weeks. To support Boston's title hopes, they could scour the trade market for help at the position with Jakob Poeltl a potential candidate.

"The question is 'does this team need to go out and get another big man who can defend?'" said Brian Windhorst. "The name that has come up that people have speculated has been Jakob Poeltl from the Spurs. They did a deal with the Spurs last year, obviously, for Derrick White.

"The Spurs may want to keep Jakob Poeltl. I'm not saying they're going to put him out there. The Spurs were unable to extend Poeltl. They tried to extnd him before the season. He will become an unrestricted free agent. They have the lowest payroll in the league. San Antonio can certainly afford to pay him, maybe that's what they're going to do at the end of the season."

Poeltl is averaging 13.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.2 blocks in 28.8 minutes over 15 games for the Spurs this season.

Windhorst reported a few weeks ago that Poeltl expects to make more as a free agent than what the Spurs could offer him via extension currently.

Spurs Learned Of Joshua Primo Allegations In January

Nov 3, 2022 11:41 AM

Dr. Hillary Cauthen made her first report about the alleged inappropriate conduct of Joshua Primo to management of the San Antonio Spurs in January 2022, according to a lawsuit filed by her attorney Tony Buzbee.

Cauthen is a sports psychologist.

Buzbee said Primo first exposed his penis to Cauthen in December of 2021 in one of their first sessions.

"Primo repeatedly exposed his genitals (nine times in total) to Dr. Cauthen during individual private sessions, despite her numerous complains about Primo's improper sexual conduct to the organization's leadership."

The lawsuit claims Cauthen lost her "dream job" because the Spurs "ignored her repeated reports of indecent exposure on the part of Primo."

The Spurs picked up the 23-24 option on the contract of Primo in October, months after learning of the allegations. San Antonio subsequently waived Primo last week.

Citing anonymous sources close to Primo, TMZ.com reported Monday that Primo is “adamant he did absolutely nothing wrong.”

Those sources told TMZ.com that Primo insists he never intentionally exposed himself.”

The Spurs released the following statement in response to the lawsuit:

We disagree with the accuracy of facts, details and timeline presented today. While we would like to share more information, we will allow the legal process to play out," said RC Buford.

"Our organization remains committed to upholding the highest standards and will continue to live by our values and culture.”

Jakob Poeltl Expects To Make More In Free Agency Than What Spurs Can Offer On Extension

Nov 1, 2022 12:14 PM

Jakob Poeltl can sign a contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs, but the two sides are limited on the number that can be agreed upon at this point due to his current contract that pays $9.4 million. The two sides have reportedly discussed an extension, but Poeltl believes he can do better on the open market this offseason when his contract expires.

"Jakob Poeltl is in the final year of his contract," said Brian Windhorst. "From what I'm told, the Spurs discussed a contract extension with him, but he's limited by how much he can sign for. It's the same reason they traded Dejounte Murray. They did such a good job on the contract that it almost works against you because when you want to sign a player, the player wants more than you can give him because you're limited on how much of a raise you can give in an extension.

"I believe Poeltl can sign an extension that can average $14 million per year. That's pretty good money for him, but he thinks he can do better and I don't blame him the way he's playing he probably can.

"Maybe the Spurs get to the offseason and re-sign him. He's headed for free agency. He can reverse course and take the extension offer. I don't know that's what they offered. I know the max they can offer him $14.5 million, $15 million on average.

"He is a trade candidate."

Blake Wesley To Miss 6-8 Weeks With Torn MCL

Nov 1, 2022 8:30 AM

Blake Wesley was just starting to get playing time in his rookie season for the San Antonio Spurs. Now, Wesley's season will be paused for 6-8 weeks due to a torn left MCL he suffered on Sunday.

Wesley bumped knees with Jaden McDaniels of the Minnesota Timberwolves while cutting through the paint. He stayed in and shot two free throws before exiting the game.

The 6-foot-5 guard was drafted out of Notre Dame by the Spurs with the 25th pick of the 2022 NBA Draft. Wesley has seen action in two games thus far in his rookie season. After the shocking waiver of Joshua Primo, Wesley seemed poised to see regular minutes for San Antonio moving forward.
