Shavlik Randolph To Work Out For Heat

Aug 31, 2009 3:56 PM

The Heat were scheduled to workout Shavlik Randolph on Monday and Tuesday.

A league source told Blazers Edge of the plans.

Randolph is an unrestricted free agent and has spent a majority of the season working out in North Carolina.

Miami could sign Randolph for the veteran's minimum, which would play right into the team's desire to maintain cap space in the present and future.

Former NBA Player Tim James Stationed In Iraq

Aug 30, 2009 7:09 PM

Tim James, a first-round draft pick of the Heat in 1999, is now stationed in Iraq.

"I got my degree, lived the life I was able, have my freedom and became a professional athlete," James told the Associated Press last week. "I'm the example of the American dream."

James is stationed 85 miles north of Baghdad.

"In life, we all have different desires and needs," said Leonard Hamilton, James' college coach. "With the passion he has, he had to go fulfill this. I'm in total support of Tim and what he's doing. He's at peace. All we can do is hope he comes back safely."

James played in just 43 NBA games for the Heat, Hornets and 76ers before a short stint in Europe.

"I think of myself as a patriot," James said. "I wanted to give back to a country that gave so much to me."

Pat Riley said on Friday that the Heat will not add another point guard via free agency.

However, two sources with knowledge of the situation told the Herald that the forward is expected to leave well before the start of Miami's training camp on Sept. 28.

Beasley's Father: I Didn't Know It Was This Bad

Aug 25, 2009 3:56 PM

Michael Beasley Sr. made a series of radio appearances on Tuesday morning, revealing some details about his son.

Heat forward Michael Beasley entered into a rehab facility over the weekend for possible substance and psychological issues.

"It went from being fun to a job now," Beasley Sr. said of his son's basketball transformation after being the second overall pick. "So I think the demands of playing 82 games, making appearances, I think is taking a toll on him.

"I was surprised, because I didn't know that it was to this extent."

Beasley Sr. also mentioned the stress that comes along with fatherhood. His son's first daughter, Mikaiya, who was born in May.

"I think it's the overwhelming responsibility of being a father. I think that caught up to him," he said. "He's a new father and I think the overwhelming responsibility is probably catching up with him.

"I know he's under a little stress."

Beasley is not able to have visitors or even speak with anyone outside of the rehab facility currently.

The forward's father is also trying to clarifying reports that Beasley has problems with marijuana. A photo posted on his Twitter page, which has since been removed, appeared to contain baggies of pot in the background.

"I talked to some people and Mike wasn't using marijuana," he said. "I think whoever took that picture was using it or had it in their presence and he was just getting a tattoo. From my understanding, he wasn't getting high or he didn't test positive for no drugs or anything.

"Whose place he was in giving the tattoo, that was theirs. I believe him that it wasn't his, because he passed his urine [test] and everything, so that was just something that somebody else had."

Three Teams Could Be Set Up More Favorably Than Knicks For 2010

Aug 23, 2009 6:52 PM

Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer wrote recently that a number of teams are set up more favorably than the Knicks heading into the famed summer of 2010.

"Ask any NBA executive outside New York and he'll probably tell you the Heat, Nets and Clippers all will have more attractive situations than the Knicks when it comes to the roster next summer," Windhorst wrote.

"All that said, my feeling is the only place LeBron would consider leaving for at this juncture in his career would be New York. Key word there being 'consider.'"

Wade, Richardson Are 'Like Brothers'

Aug 21, 2009 4:17 PM

Quentin Richardson is excited to play with Dwyane Wade this season.

Both Wade and Richardson are from the Chicago area.

"Aside from the fact that he's one of the best players in the NBA, it's somebody that I have a personal relationship, I've been knowing him since he was younger," Richardson told WQAM in Miami.

"We both know each other on a friendship level where we a lot like brothers, and that comfort zone alone is a great place to be. Just growing up, ever since we've been in the league, we always talk about being able to play with each other and this is finally a situation that presented itself."
