Snider: 76ers Will Stay Course

Sep 25, 2007 8:11 AM

With the Sixers beginning training camp next week at Duke University, Ed Snider won't be pinned down making predictions.

But the Sixers' chairman said he was comfortable with the direction the franchise was headed in, even though the team was likely to be picked by many to finish last in the five-team Atlantic Division.

Unlike previous seasons, when the Sixers tried to find players who would fit into Allen Iverson's style of play, the Sixers, according to Snider, aren't going for any quick fixes this time.

"We have a three-year plan and we are in the first of it, and no matter what, we will stick to it," Snider said recently.

The plan includes allowing the young players to grow while attempting to attract a premier free agent next season, when the Sixers are expected to be well under the NBA's salary-cap and luxury-tax levels

Larry Brown Awash In Job Offers, Agent Says

Sep 24, 2007 8:10 AM

Larry Brown, the former 76ers head coach and current executive vice president of basketball operations, didn't land an NBA head coaching position this off-season, but there was no shortage of coaching opportunities, according to his agent, Joe Glass.

Glass wouldn't confirm or deny the story in SI.com stating that Brown almost accepted a position to become an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics. It reported that Brown turned the job down after talking to Sixers chairman Ed Snider, who persuaded him to remain with the team.

Snider was unavailable for comment yesterday, and Glass wouldn't discuss specifics involving the Celtics. The agent said Brown also was not available for comment.

"I can't comment on this story you are talking about from Sports Illustrated," Glass said last night. "We have had so many offers over the course of the summer, I can't keep track."

Glass said it wouldn't be appropriate to comment on any prospective job offers.

"Right now, Larry is working hard, scouting, evaluating talent, and helping the 76ers," Glass said.

Brown was quoted in the story as saying he would like to get back into coaching, but added that he doesn't want to do it at the expense of current Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks, who is in the final year of his contract.

Celtics Offered Larry Brown Staff Post

Sep 22, 2007 12:55 AM

The Boston Celtics had already traded for Ray Allen and were on the verge of acquiring Kevin Garnett, yet coach Doc Rivers had one more coup in mind. This summer he almost hired Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown to join the Celtics as his lead assistant, SI.com has learned.

"The way we left it, I told Doc I was 90 percent sure I was coming," says Brown. But Brown changed his mind after discussing the Boston offer with 76ers owner Ed Snider, who convinced Brown to remain as executive VP in charge of basketball.

A league source confirms that Boston had offered Brown the job as an assistant to Rivers, who has two fully-guaranteed years remaining on his contract with the Celtics. At the time Rivers was telling other prospective assistants that he was on the verge of hiring a mystery candidate whose name he couldn't divulge.

Sixers Talking With Iguodala

Sep 11, 2007 12:34 PM

Billy King said the Sixers still are trying to sign Andre Iguodala to a contract extension. Under NBA rules, teams have until Oct. 31 to sign a player to an extension. If not, Iguodala will become a restricted free agent next summer as long as the Sixers make a qualifying offer.

Iguodala led the Sixers in scoring last season, averaging 18.2 points, 5.7 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game. He spent the summer playing for the United States select team, which scrimmaged against the U.S. National team in preparation for the FIBA Americas tournament.

"We've been talking," King said. "We'll just keep talking and, hopefully, we can get something done. The object is to get something done because we want Andre. We feel Andre is a big part of the organization. But when you go through negotiations, it's a process."
