Jahlil Okafor Will Be Accompanied By Security Guard When Going Out

Nov 30, 2015 10:02 PM

Jahlil Okafor will now be accompanied by a security guard whenever he goes out on the town.

The request for security was made by Okafor's handlers.

"A lot of teams do that for their players anyway,'' a source close to Okafor said. "So from now on the Sixers are going to have someone at his disposal full-time."

Okafor engaged in a brawl with a man outside a Boston nightclub last week.

The fight in Boston followed an incident in October in which a heckler pointed a gun at Okafor's head following a verbal exchange at a club in Philadelphia.

Agents Deride Way 76ers Have Operated During Rebuild

Nov 30, 2015 2:39 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers are in the third season of Sam Hinkie's rebuilding project with no turnaround in sight.

The way they have treated players, agents and possibly other teams may be the most problematic part of the process long-term.

"Their inability to establish a rapport with agents and probably with other teams is definitely going to lead to their demise," an agent said of the Sixers' regime.

"When you're building a business culture, you're dealing with human beings," another prominent agent said. "Especially with athletes, you've got to have a rapport with these guys. It's a culture of communication and transparency, and none of that exists."

"There's nobody there, and nobody will go there," an agent said. "Nobody. Cap space won't matter. You know who'll go there? Guys that are trying to steal money."

Jahlil Okafor 'Not Proud' Of Off-Court Incidents

Nov 30, 2015 12:17 PM

Jahlil Okafor apologized for several off-court incidents in his personal life.

Okafor was pulled over about three weeks ago for driving 108 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. Okafor was also involved in a fight outside a Boston nightclub.

"I hold myself to a higher standard than anyone else ever could and I'm not proud of some of my decisions over the last few months," Okafor tweeted. "I own my choices both personally and now publicly. At this point I am cooperating and respecting the process I have to go through."

Okafor declined to address the issues with reporters.

"I'm not talking about anything but basketball," Okafor said before Sunday's game against the Memphis Grizzlies at FedExForum. "I already made my statement."

Brett Brown said he's unsure if Okafor will receive a suspension.

"As an organization, anything like this is concerning."

"It's like any 19-year-old kid," Brown said. "You are trying to find ways to help him.

"He's knows he's made mistakes, and we know he's made mistakes. As an organization we will deal with them as we need to and should."

JaVale McGee: I'm A Lot Smarter, More Patient In My Game

Nov 29, 2015 2:53 PM

JaVale McGee is trying to make the most of his opportunity with the Dallas Mavericks.

“I’m a lot smarter and I’m a lot more patient in my game,” he said. “In college, I was 38 percent from the 3 [point line], and when I came to summer league with the Wizards, I shot a three and made it. The next game, [coaches said], ‘Don’t shoot no threes. Just rebound and block shots.’

“I’m like, ‘Damn, y’all just limited what I have been doing my whole life.’ ”

McGee does not look back fondly on his years with the Washington Wizards.

“It was a real negative situation for me,” he said. “I’ve always been blessed to be able to go somewhere else positive. You definitely learn it’s a business. Even if it’s people ahead of you that’s playing that’s not better, they make more money than you, they’re going to play. It’s not anything personal.”

Brett Brown: Naive To Think There Won't Be Problems With Such Young Team

Nov 29, 2015 2:48 PM

Brett Brown talked about the potential for problems inherent in the way the Philadelphia 76ers' roster has been built around young players.

"To think that you are going to build the program that we have built that is dominated by 19- and 20-year-old kids and for there not to be problems is very, very, very naive," said Brown.

Jahlil Okafor had an incident this week outside a Boston nightclub, while a traffic violation from October came to the surface as well.

Anything over 40 MPH is considered reckless driving.

Jahlil Okafor Punches Man Outside Boston Nightclub

Nov 27, 2015 11:34 AM

Jahlil Okafor was involved in a fight outside a Boston nightclub early Thursday morning, according to a video obtained and published by TMZ.

Okafor is seen shouting at several individuals and then shoves a man to the ground.

Okafor then punches a man after at least one person tries to restrain him, knocking him to the ground again.

At the start of the video, Okafor can be heard shouting to someone, "We got money, you broke ass . . ." He utters a racial slur.

Boston police don't plan on investigating the fight unless someone involved comes forward to say they were victim of a crime.

"Apparently, they said: 'The 76ers suck and you guys are all losers. You'll never win a game,' " a source close to Okafor told ESPN's Jeff Goodman.

"I was around the corner when it happened. I saw him a minute after he knocked the dude out," the source said. "I think the guy was just talking s---. Saying the Sixers suck."

GMs Cite Steep Learning Curve On Defense For Duke Players Coming To NBA

Nov 23, 2015 1:20 PM

Duke players who come to the NBA often have a big adjustment to make in terms of defense due to how Mike Krzyzewski teaches that side of the floor.

Jahlil Okafor came to the NBA with questions about his defense and he has predictably struggled.

"I have had several GMs who have drafted young Duke players tell me that the learning curve between the sort of defense Coach K teaches at Duke and what they're required to play at the NBA level is pretty steep," wrote Chad Ford.

Joel Embiid Showing 'New Level Of Maturity'

Nov 23, 2015 12:33 PM

Joel Embiid has been working more diligently on his conditioning as he rehabs from another foot operation this season.

"He just seems like (there's) a new level of maturity, a new level of seriousness in him," a source said. "The gravity of the situation is on him; it's on everyone."

The multi-season injury to Embiid has delayed the 76ers' timetable for their rebuild.

76ers Considering Swap Of Positions For Nerlens Noel, Jahlil Okafor

Nov 20, 2015 7:17 PM

Brett Brown and the Philadelphia 76ers are considering having Jahlil Okafor and Nerlens Noel switch positions.

Moving Okafor to power forward would take advantage of his shooting touch from the elbow, while sliding Noel to center allows him to be more of a rim protector.

“It’s not even borne out losing,” said Brown. “It’s borne out of just having an opportunity to watch these guys play more and more.”

Okafor is more of a back-to-the-basket big man.

“It’s not even borne out losing,” said Brown. “It’s borne out of just having an opportunity to watch these guys play more and more.”
