Blake Griffin: Svi Mykhailiuk Is 'A Basketball Purist'

Jun 28, 2020 12:21 PM

Blake Griffin and Luke Kennard praised Svi Mykhailiuk's development over this past season, highlighting his natural feel for the game.

Mykhailiuk averaged 11.8 points in 31 games as a starter, including shooting 40.2 percent from 3.

“Svi is one of the guys on our team who just really is like a basketball purist. He’s putting in the time every single day. He’s in the gym sometimes multiple times a day. He’s listening, he’s learning, he’s watching. He has a really good feel for the game," said Griffin.

Kennard noted Mykhailiuk's constant improvement and dedication to the game.

"He learned something every day. Svi is a workhorse, man. I mean he’s always in the gym. He’s always there getting shots up early, staying after. And he’s a smart player, he’s smooth.”

Eight Non-Bubble Teams Interested In Playing Games At Secondary Site

Jun 27, 2020 1:25 PM

The NBA and NBPA are holding discussions about a possible second site for the eight teams not participating in the Orlando restart. The Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors face a scenario where they will go nearly six months without playing a competitive game.

Sources tell Sam Amick of The Athletic that there is significant support from most of those eight teams about the concept.

Those eight teams could even play televised games.

The Cavaliers, Pistons and Hawks have been the most vocal among the group in support of the idea. The Knicks have expressed reservations, at least in part because they have a roster with several pending free agents.

One of those teams could serve as host, or they could also play in a city such as Las Vegas or Houston.

Troy Weaver Says He Wants To Surround Blake Griffin, Derrick Rose With 'Mixture Of Young Guys'

Jun 23, 2020 1:18 AM

Troy Weaver said he wanted to build the Detroit Pistons around Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose at his introductory news conference.

"I know he's anxious to get back and show people what kind of player he is after just playing a few games last year, but as long as Blake is in a Pistons uniform and under contract, I look forward to working with him in helping us restore the Pistons. He's definitely in our plans going forward," said Weaver of working with Griffin.

Weaver also described Rose as a "big time" player.

Griffin has a player option in the 2021-22 season, while Rose has one more season remaining on his deal.

Weaver added that he wanted to surround Rose and Griffin with a mix of young players.

"We're excited to get them healthy and help them move forward. We feel like we have a good mixture of young guys with those two staples to be able to start there, but obviously we've got a lot of work to do with the draft and free agency."

Pistons Interested In Chauncey Billups, Tayshaun Prince For Assistant GM Job

Jun 8, 2020 11:23 AM

The Detroit Pistons will search for an assistant general manager after they hire a general manager.

Tayshaun Prince and Chauncey Billups are two former players of the Pistons that they would have interest in hiring for an assistant general manager position.

Prince is currently vice president of basketball affairs for the Memphis Grizzlies.

Billups has expressed that he would only be interested in being hired as general manager. The Pistons would prefer to hire Billups as an assistant GM because he has no previous NBA executive experience. Billups turned down an opportunity to run the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2017 to remain in broadcasting.

Teams Left Out Of Regular-Season Resumption Propose Regional Mini Summer Leagues, Training Camps

Jun 6, 2020 1:28 AM

A majority of the NBA teams left out of the league's restart of the regular season have proposed putting on their own mini summer leagues and training camps to continue to develop their young players.

The teams, which include Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Minnesota, and New York, could possibly go nine months in between games. There is concern that young, developing players will struggle as they are separated from their teams for an extended period of time.

Several teams have proposed training camps and organized team activities in lieu of regular season games.

The Pistons and Cavs are discussing the possibility of having joint practices, as well as a mini-pod of games.

The teams have presented several ideas to the league, including: mandatory and voluntary workouts in July, regional minicamps in August that include joint practices and three televised games, and for their 2020-21 training camps to start 7-10 days earlier than teams competing in Orlando.

The league said it would work with the teams in question to help reach a solution.
