Sonics Serious About A Move To San Jose

Feb 26, 2006 11:30 AM

The Seattle SuperSonics' intentions to move to San Jose are serious, but the league remains opposed to putting another team in Golden State's neighborhood.

San Jose played host to the Warriors for one season in the late-90's while the Oakland Arena was being remodeled.  It is the biggest city in the San Francisco Bay Area and has had success supporting the Shark of the NHL.

More Trade Options In Offseason Without Murphy And JRich BYC's For W's

Feb 24, 2006 1:39 AM

Golden State's Chris Mullin wouldn't say if he came close to making a deal on Thursday, one after the gutsy Baron Davis trade, but he said teams were not offering enough and wanted too much in return. He said he never came across the "right piece" to make the Warriors better.

"I really wasn't anticipating one way or the other," Mullin said on a conference call. "I looked at a lot, not just today, but over the last several months. ... Anything we feel we need to address would be addressed later."

Mullin said he expects more options this offseason. Not only will more players be available, but his own players won't be as restricted by collective bargaining agreement rules. Guard Jason Richardson and Troy Murphy, perhaps the Warriors' two most attractive players, lose their base year compensation status in July, making them easier to trade.

Cleveland Still Looking For A Guard, Not Expected To Make Drastic Move

Feb 22, 2006 10:12 PM

Cleveland general Manager Danny Ferry isn't expected to make a drastic move today.

``I like coaching the players I have,'' Cavs coach Mike Brown said Wednesday. ``You never say never, but if we do anything at this point it would be a surprise.''

According to several league executives, the Cavs have been looking around for help at the guard positions. Their most tradeable player is Drew Gooden because of his value and the fact he's going to be a free agent.

But Ferry seems reluctant to trade him for just a guard, especially because he's been an excellent team player and has gotten more consistent as the season has progressed. With that in mind and a lack of salary-cap space or draft picks to use, the chances of a significant deal are slim.

The Cavaliers have reportedly discuss adding one of four guards; Derek Fisher, Tony Delk, Earl Watson and Keyon Dooling.

KG's Status Holding Up Other Trades?

Feb 19, 2006 11:50 PM

Kevin Garnett's status, perhaps more than anything, is holding up any truly major deals involving the elite stars of the game. The feeling around the NBA remains - based more on observation than actual information - that something inevitably will crack in Minnesota and Garnett will be traded or ask to be traded.

Garnett has been a Lakers' Plan A or B for some time now after Yao Ming and Amare Stoudemire re-signed. Boston, Seattle, Indiana, Golden State and the Bulls are some of the teams reportedly hanging back just in case Garnett ever came on the trade market.

In this NBA, it would seem that you need just one other good player with Garnett to be in the playoffs and two (especially one who's a finisher) to be a championship contender. It's why even in Minnesota there have been rumors recently of trying to reacquire Stephon Marbury.

Garnett is the best three-quarters player in the NBA; versatile, defensive-minded, tough. He just doesn't quite have that go-to move to finish off a game. But put him with a scorer, like Kobe Bryant, and you have a potential championship duo.

The Timberwolves have been badly mismanaged for years with little stability to create a team. Garnett knows all this and, at least for now, says he's sticking by his crew, whomever that may be from day to day.

Last 30 Games Will Decide Pietrus' Fate With Warriors

Feb 19, 2006 2:15 AM

Thirty games to figure out who Mickael Pietrus really is, how he fits into the Warriors' big picture and which players, if any, need to be moved out of his way.

That's what the Warriors face starting Tuesday in Sacramento, and you can follow along if you still have the stomach to endure another playoff-free season.

They have 30 games to decide if Pietrus is better than Mike Dunleavy, worth as much money as Troy Murphy, as valuable as Jason Richardson and as essential as Chris Mullin has envisioned.

A new long-term Pietrus deal would draw major financial blood from the Warriors, unless Mullin traded away one or two of the players to whom he has already committed large dollars. You know the list, and it starts with Dunleavy and Murphy.

Diogu And Davis Have Verbal Confrontation

Feb 18, 2006 1:59 PM

A couple of Warriors sources reported a verbal confrontation in the locker room several weeks ago with Baron Davis, who complained to Ike Diogu that he wasn't getting open fast enough.

"I'm still learning," Diogu said after getting 10 rebounds and six points as a starter in Wednesday night's 88-81 victory over the Clippers.

Nellie Not Yet Ready To Return

Feb 18, 2006 1:55 PM

Many speculate that Don Nelson's return to coaching is a slam dunk. Nelson resigned from the Mavs on March 19 and became a consultant with the team.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban continued to honor Nelson's coaching contract, which pays more than $5 million per year but expires after this season. Nelson has been linked to possible openings in Sacramento, Seattle and Golden State.

"I'm not planning on it at this particular moment," he said of coaching. "I've been in New Zealand. I'm in Maui. I'm having the time of my life."

Cavs Have Discussions For Watson And Fisher

Feb 16, 2006 3:32 AM

Two league executives said the Cavs have had discussions about trading Gooden for Denver Nuggets point guard Earl Watson and Golden State Warriors point guard Derek Fisher, among others.

Both of those players have four years and around $25 million left on their contracts after this season, making them somewhat undesirable considering both Eric Snow and Damon Jones also have three years left on their contracts. Not to mention that, in general, trading quality big men for guards is a long-standing basketball no-no.

A more interesting option would be the Toronto Raptors' Mike James, who likely will opt out of his contract at season's end. But it isn't clear whether the Cavs and Raptors have had meaningful discussions.

Baron Davis Out Until After All-Star Break?

Feb 13, 2006 4:50 AM

Judging by Baron Davis' immobility after Saturday's win over the Cavaliers, the Warriors will be without their starting point guard until after the All-Star break.

Davis, who sprained his right ankle at the end of the first quarter, sat in the visitors' locker room with his foot heavily taped 30 minutes after the game. He couldn't put a sock on without assistance, strapped a soft cast over the foot, and ultimately left the arena in a wheelchair.

Though X-rays taken after the game were negative and the Warriors are officially listing him as day-to-day, Davis sounded prepared for an extended stay on the sidelines.

"The way it feels now, I don't even want to talk about it," he said. "The good thing is, it's a clean sprain. I just got to work out, ride the bike, work on my shot while I'm off. And when I get back, I'm going to lead us to victory."
