Paul George: Assignment This Year Is Winning It All

Oct 27, 2022 3:58 PM

The Los Angeles Clippers have championship aspirations again this season after getting Kawhi Leonard back from a torn ACL.

"I'm more focused than I ever been," George told ESPN. "You talk about locked in, I am locked into this year. I mean that's what you're going to get, a leader and just whatever it takes. That's always been my attitude and the spirit I carry.

"I'm prepared and understand what the assignment is this year.

"Winning it all."

George and Leonard joined the Clippers in 2019 and have subsequently only won three playoff series together.

John Wall Was 'Pissed As Hell' Over Not Playing Last Season With Rockets

Oct 25, 2022 12:18 PM

When John Wall sat out the entirety of the 21-22 season, it was widely portrayed as a mutual decision between him and the Houston Rockets. Wall recently made it clear that it was not his choosing.

"Pissed as hell," said Wall to Sam Amick of The Athletic. "Pissed as hell. I wanted to play basketball. In my last meeting I had there, they were like, ‘Oh, you had a great year the year before. We can’t wait to have you back next year. Build on this, and try to keep helping young guys.’ So I’m thinking I’ll play the same role I played the year before."

Wall was asked to specify who from the Rockets he was communicating with.

"I’m talking to (Rockets coach Stephen) Silas, and I ended up talking to (Rockets general manager) Rafael (Stone) too. Those are great guys, and I ended up talking to both of them. It’s the exit meeting, so you’re talking to both of them back-to-back. And I’m thinking, ‘OK, I’m coming back here next year. And I want to be in a winning situation, but whatever position God put me in, I’m built for it. I can get through it. I just want to help as much as I can.’ And I felt like I deserved to play, like I deserved to start. (But) if you drafted a guy No. 1, or No. 2, and he’s a point guard, like I totally get it. I’m not mad about that.

"So that was kind of tough for me to be in that situation, because I want to play. And then the whole time, I was like, ‘Man, we’ve got to find a way to get out of here.’ I know it’s gonna be harder because I had two years left (on his contract worth a combined $91 million)."

Wall was then asked how the Rockets informed him of their change of position.

"In August, I went back to check on my condo and I was going back to Miami, where I’ll (stay) in the summer. So they were like, ‘Yo, the thing is, listen, we’ll bring you out for like 10 minutes a game, and sometimes you won’t play at all, or you can just not play at all the whole year and we’ll try to find a trade.’ And I was like, ‘I’m not trying to play 10 minutes a game or not play some games.’ I didn’t want to do that."

Kawhi Leonard Comes Off Bench For First Time In Nine Years

Oct 21, 2022 8:05 AM

Kawhi Leonard made his return to the court after a year-and-a-half, but that return took a bit longer than was expected. Leonard came off the bench for the first time since November of 213, when he was still and up-and-coming player with the San Antonio Spurs.

In all, Leonard played three separate stints of six-to-seven minutes and 21:17 total. The LA Clippers star said he made the decision after coming off the bench in conjunction with head coach Ty Lue. The Clippers had Leonard simulate the feel of coming off the bench in scrimmages and analyzed substitution patterns where he wouldn't sit for too long, while still making an impact at the end of the game.

Make an impact at the end of the game is exactly what Leonard did. He drew a key charge from LeBron James late in the fourth quarter. Leonard then knocked down a jumper with under a minute to play to help the Clippers hold off the rival Lakers.

"One scenario with me starting, I would have been sitting like 35 minutes real time," Leonard said of starting and still being able to finish the game. "That's way too long. So, I just thought this was the best situation. But we'll see how it goes moving forward."

Both Lue and Leonard said if either party didn't feel this was working, they'd turn back to Leonard starting. For his part, Leonard has his eyes on the long-term.

"You gotta gradually play minutes in order to get the ACL strong," Leonard said. "Once you start playing 38 minutes first game, it could easily weaken up, but I'm listening to the doctor with that.

"It's a long season. We wanna get in the playoffs and want me to play in the playoffs."

Clippers Convert Moses Brown To Two-Way Contract

Oct 16, 2022 9:10 AM

The LA Clippers converted the contract for Moses Brown to a Two-Way deal. Brown had been signed to a non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 deal.

The 7-foot-2 center provides LA with depth behind Ivica Zubac. The two are the only traditional fives on the Clippers roster.

Los Angeles will be Brown's fifth stop in the NBA. He's previously played for the Portland Trail Blazers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Dallas Mavericks and Cleveland Cavaliers. In 92 NBA games (38 starts), Brown has averaged 6.0 points and 5.8 rebounds.

Reggie Jackson To Start At Point Guard For Clippers

Oct 16, 2022 8:53 AM

The LA Clippers plan to open the season with a familiar face at point guard. Reggie Jackson will be the opening lead ballhandler when the Clippers start the regular season.

There was a thought that offseason addition John Wall might start at point guard for the Clippers. While Wall will be a big part of the rotation for LA, Ty Lue is sticking with Jackson. It's also unlikely that Wall will play in back-to-back games, at least in the early part of the season. Wall hasn't appeared in an NBA game since April 23, 2021, as he sat out all of last season while with the Houston Rockets.

Last season Jackson averaged 16.8 points and 4.8 assists per game. His shooting percentages plummeted, as Jackson was often the only on-ball creator available for the Clippers. With Kawhi Leonard and Paul George healthy, Jackson should attract far less defensive attention this season.
