Dennis Schroder Charged With Misdemeanor Battery

Dennis Schroder was charged with misdemeanor battery in an Atlanta suburb early Friday morning, court records show.

"We are aware of an incident involving Dennis Schroder earlier this morning," the Hawks said in a statement. "We are still gathering information as it pertains to the situation, and out of respect for the legal process, we will have no further comment at this time."

Schroder allegedly had a confrontation at a hookah bar.

The report says a security camera caught Schroder and several others in a heated exchange with the victim.

NBA players are subject to fines and suspensions under the personal conduct policy in their contracts.

Hawks To Reduce Arena Capacity To 15,700

The Atlanta Hawks are reducing the capacity of Philips Arena by approximately 2,350 seats.

Steve Koonin said of the seating capacity “the building is down to 15,700 and that is because the suite wall is gone.”

The last three seasons, 2014-2017, the listed basketball capacity for Philips Arena was 18,047. It was listed as 18,118 in 2013-14 and 18,238 in 2012-13.

The $192.5 million remaking of the 18-year-old arena will be spread over two offseasons.

Clippers Trade DeAndre Liggins To Hawks

The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to trade DeAndre Liggins and cash to the Atlanta Hawks.

The Clippers created a $1.67 million trade exception with the move. They'll have one year to use the exception.

The Hawks will waive Liggins, who will be owed $26,000 on his 2017-18 contract.

The move also drops the Clippers $122,000 below the luxury tax.

Hawks Sign Jeremy Evans, Jordan Mathews

The Atlanta Hawks have signed Jeremy Evans and Jordan Mathews.

A six-year NBA veteran, Evans spent 2010-15 with the Utah Jazz, the 2015-16 season with the Dallas Mavericks and last year with Khimki (Russia). The 2012 NBA slam dunk contest champion, Evans has appeared in 249 career regular season games (nine starts), averaging 3.5 points and 2.6 rebounds in 10.5 minutes (.568 FG%). He’s also spent time with Utah and Texas in the NBA G League.

Evans, a 6’9 forward, was originally selected in the second round (55th overall) of the 2010 NBA Draft by Utah after a four-year career at Western Kentucky. Evans will wear jersey No. 22.

Mathews, who played three years at California before transferring to Gonzaga for his senior season, averaged 10.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 28.0 minutes (39 games, all starts) in 2016-17, helping lead the Zags to the National Championship game. His 85 three-pointers made last year tied for the seventh-highest single-season total in school history.

DeAndre’ Bembry has sustained a strained right tricep.

An MRI performed at the Emory Orthopaedics & Spine Center on Friday, Sept. 8 confirmed the injury.

Bembry is expected to be out of basketball activity for four-to-six weeks, and his status will be updated as appropriate.

Bembry was the Atlanta Hawks' 21st overall pick in 2016 out of Saint Joseph's.

The Atlanta Hawks have announced a number of front office hires and promotions.

Rod Higgins has been named as a College Scout, Brady Howe as Assistant Athletic Trainer, Adam Loiacono as Performance Therapist, Dan Martinez as Senior Director of Team Operations and Derek Pierce as Pro Player Personnel Scout; Daniel Bove has been promoted to Sports Scientist/Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach, Scottie Parker to Head Athletic Trainer, Zach Peterson to Video Coordinator, Patrick St. Andrews to Assistant Coach and Daniel Starkman to Manager of Basketball Information and Scouting Coordinator.

Higgins, a longtime NBA player, executive, coach and scout, played 13 seasons with Chicago, Seattle, San Antonio, New Jersey, Golden State, Sacramento and Cleveland, before retiring in 1994. Higgins was an Assistant Coach with the Warriors from 1994-2000 before joining the Washington Wizards as Assistant General Manager. He returned to Golden State as General Manager, then spent 2007-14 with the Charlotte Bobcats, finishing as President of Basketball Operations.

Howe comes to the Hawks from the Salt Lake City Stars of the NBA G League, where he served as Director of Athletic Performance.

Hawks Sign Josh Magette, Tyler Cavanaugh

The Atlanta Hawks have signed Josh Magette to a two-way contract, and has also signed Tyler Cavanaugh.

A 6’1 guard, Magette spent time during the 2016 preseason with the Hawks and was part of the team’s NBA Summer League roster in 2017.

Last season, Magette started 50 games for the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA G League, averaging 15.8 points, 9.4 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 35.3 minutes. He led the G League in assists per game for the second straight season, and was named Second Team All-G League.

Cavanaugh was also a member of the Hawks’ Summer League team, competing in Las Vegas this past July. 

He spent his first two college seasons at Wake Forest before transferring to George Washington. As a graduate student at GW last season, he appeared in 35 games (all starts), leading the team in points (18.3), rebounds (8.4), free throws made (173) and attempted (204) in 32.2 minutes (.448 FG%, .409 3FG%, .848 FT%). He was named to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team and the All-Academic Team.
