Another MVP caliber season from Nikola Jokic has kept the Denver Nuggets afloat while playing without Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr., who are both injured.
Murray tore his ACL last March while Porter underwent back surgery near the start of the season.
The Nuggets could potentially get both Murray and Porter back at some point this season.
"There is a chance both Murray and Porter could return this season, sources say," writes Zach Lowe of ESPN.
The Nuggets reached the Western Conference Finals in 2020 and looked even better in 2021 following the Aaron Gordon trade before Murray suffered a torn ACL.
Trae Young and Nikola Jokic have been named the NBA's Players of the Week for Week 14.
Young averaged 31.3 points, 9.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds as the Atlanta Hawks went 4-0.
Jokic averaged 36.3 points, 11.3 rebounds and 10.0 assists as the Denver Nuggets went 2-1.
The Denver Nuggets are set to add a reinforcement for their frontcourt behind Nikola Jokic. Denver will sign DeMarcus Cousins to a 10-Day contract, as they look for reliable backup play behind their MVP.
Cousins was waived by the Milwaukee Bucks early in January. While with the Bucks, Cousins played in 17 games (five starts) and averaged 9.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
The Nuggets met with the big man shortly after Cousins was waived by Milwaukee to see if he would be a fit. With several players out due to injuries and illnesses, Denver deemed that Cousins was worth at least a 10-day look.
The Denver Nuggets were in the market to upgrade their shooting and got one of the better shooters available in a three-team trade with the Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spurs.
Denver will acquire Bryn Forbes from San Antonio and will send the Spurs a 2028 second-round pick. To create the roster space for Forbes, and to stay under the luxury tax, the Nuggets are trading Bol Bol and P.J. Dozier to the Celtics. Boston will send Juancho Hernangomez to San Antonio.
Forbes is shooting 41.7% from behind the arc this season. That's a boon to a Nuggets team that has slipped to the bottom half of the league in three-point shooting.
For the Celtics, this puts them in range of avoiding the luxury tax. Boston is one more salary-clearing move away now from being out of the tax entirely.
The Celtics have no plans to immediately waive Bol or Dozier, who are both expected to be out for the season. A deal sending Bol to the Detroit Pistons was recently voided. In recent days it was announced Bol would have foot surgery, which will sideline him for 8-12 weeks.
For their part, the Spurs pick up a second-round pick for a player who wasn't part of their future. San Antonio can now focus on playing their younger guards. Hernangomez is fully non-guaranteed for 22-23, so the Spurs added no long-term salary in this deal, as well.
Bol Bol has decided to undergo surgery on his foot and will be out eight to 12 weeks.
The Denver Nuggets agreed to trade Bol to the Detroit Pistons, but the deal was voided due to an issue with the physical exam.
Bol has appeared in 14 games this season with the Nuggets.
The Denver Nuggets have expressed interest in trading for San Antonio Spurs guard Bryn Forbes. The Spurs are shopping Forbes, who is on a one-year, $4.5 million contract.
Denver has been looking to upgrade their shooting around Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets currently rank in the bottom half of the NBA in three-point shooting, which is Forbes' specialty. Denver is hoping to get Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. back before the end of the season but could use some shot-making until then.
San Antonio rarely makes in-season deals but has Forbes and veteran big man Thaddeus Young available leading up to the trade deadline. Young isn't a part of the Spurs rotation and is widely expected to be traded or bought out. Moving Forbes would open up more playing time for a host of young San Antonio guards, including Joshua Primo, Devin Vassell and Tre Jones.
Michael Porter Jr. has not been ruled out for the remainder of the season as he recovers from back surgery on Dec. 1st, a source told the Denver Post.
Porter and the Nuggets have been encouraged by his recovery.
Porter felt an immediate improvement as soon as the surgery was performed, a separate source said.
The Nuggets also hope to get Jamal Murray back before the playoffs. Murray tore his ACL last year.
The Detroit Pistons have called off their trade with the Denver Nuggets for Bol Bol following his physical.
Bol had foot surgery during his lone season at Oregon, but hasn’t had injury trouble since joining the Nuggets in 2019. Bol is on an expiring contract.
The Pistons and Nuggets agreed to a trade of Bol for Rodney McGruder.
The Denver Nuggets have agreed to sign James Ennis to a 10-day hardship deal.
Ennis is expected to be available to play on Tuesday.
Ennis has been on 10-days earlier this season with both the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers.
