Michael Avenatti Allegedly Embezzled Settlement Money Tied To Hassan Whiteside

Apr 22, 2019 3:11 PM

Michael Avenatti allegedly embezzled $2.5 million to pay for a share of a private jet from a settlement he negotiated for the former girlfriend of Hassan Whiteside.

Whiteside and Gardner agreed to a $3 million settlement to reflect, in their words, “[Gardner’s] investment of time and support over a number of years as Hassan pursued a career in the NBA.”

The plan was for Whiteside to pay $2.75 million later that month, and for the final $250,000 to come in 2020. Avenatti's fee was supposed to be approximately $1 million.

Avenatti hid the scheme by never giving Gardner a copy of the settlement. Avenatti paid Gardner a total of $194,000 over 11 months and then lied about Whiteside not holding up his end of the agreement.

Dwyane Wade Records Triple-Double In Final Game Of Career

Apr 11, 2019 2:55 AM

Dwyane Wade recorded a triple-double as the Miami Heat lost to the Brooklyn Nets 113-94 to close out his NBA career. Wade finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his 5th career triple-double.

The "Banana Boat" crew of Chris Paul, LeBron James, and Carmelo Anthony were all in attendance.

"Obviously, it means a lot [to have them here]. They know that I will always be there for them, especially in a moment like this. No matter what I'm doing, I will be there for their last game. It was cool to see those guys over there. I'm glad they came, but at the same time I wish they weren't here because the whole time they kept telling me to shoot, shoot, shoot. But it was great. We've got a brotherhood. Those are my brothers," said Wade.

LeBron James, speaking in a sideline interview in the second quarter, echoed his sentiment.

"Listen, we all started this journey together. Obviously, CP came into the league a couple years after us, but we have a brotherhood that is just so much more than basketball. CP played last night, we had our last regular-season game last night and Melo is right here in New York, so we kind of made the plan and made the decision to come up here."

Dwyane Wade Following Final Home Game With Heat: 'This City Means Everything To Me'

Apr 10, 2019 2:26 AM

Dwyane Wade scored 30 points in his final home game with the Miami Heat, a 122-99 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. The Heat were eliminated from the playoffs after the Pistons beat the Grizzlies.

Wade will retire after 16 seasons in the league.

"It's meant everything. To be able to come here and be embraced, to find a home, to be able to grow. I think that's the one thing. When I was on the court early on and Stan (Van Gundy) let me grow, as a player, to whether it was mistakes I made in life, to whatever it was, this city has allowed me to grow. I hope they are proud of what they have helped me become. This city means everything to me. It's forever, forever, forever going to be my home," said Wade following the game.

The Heat played a video tribute to Wade before the game that traced his career with the team.

"Man, you're going to make me cry before this game. Man, I love you guys. I'm thankful for this moment. I'm thankful for this entire season. I thank you guys for dancing with me this year. I thank you guys for your patience this year. I thank you for all your love, and for you having my back this year. I've got some brothers that will always be my brothers. I love you guys," Wade added.

Dwyane Wade: Taking Step Back To LeBron Was Toughest Part At The Time

Apr 9, 2019 1:41 PM

Dwyane Wade sacrificed some personal awards to accommodate LeBron James and Chris Bosh in 2010, but he went on to win two more titles and cement his legacy.

“Taking a step back to Bron, that was the toughest part for me at the time,” Wade said. “Obviously, before my injuries, I was a bad boy. It was my city, my team. (If) we win the Finals that year (in 2011), I’m arguably Finals MVP. I didn’t need to … but we got two out of the next three championships and I’d still do it all over again.”

Wade acknowledges how Stephen Curry has similarly taken a step back for Kevin Durant.

“Special, man,” Wade said of Curry. “You got a guy who won two MVPs. Not saying they would’ve won without KD but maybe they wouldn’t have won it every year, but they would’ve had the chance to win it every year, with the team they had, and those guys to welcome him with open arms, knowing that it was going to take whatever it is away, shots and opportunities, or whatever.

“The ultimate goal is to win. And that’s special. That’s why they’re a special team and special group. Because they’ve been able to make the sacrifice,” Wade said of the Warriors. “Not a lot of people can do it. And you’ve seen it. A lot of people have struggled doing it. Maybe because you’re young, maybe because a lot of people haven’t done it before you, so you don’t see. But it’s special when guys are able to make the sacrifice for the betterment of the team.”

Erik Spoelstra On Final 4th Quarter Possession: Early Referee Whistle Forced 'Botched Play'

Apr 7, 2019 11:02 PM

Erik Spoelstra said an early whistle from referee Eric Lewis on the Miami Heat's final play in the 4th quarter contributed to a confusing inbounds sequence. The Heat lost to the Raptors 117-109 in overtime, putting a significant dent in their playoff hopes.

The sequence in question came during an inbounds play with the game tied at 103 with 10 seconds left in the 4th quarter. Lewis blew his whistle, leading to Heat players starting their play before inbounds passer Dion Waiters had received the ball. James Johnson missed the ensuing game-winning shot off the broken play.

Dwyane Wade was supposed to receive the inbounds pass on the final sequence, but he never touched the ball.

"You blow the whistle when you hand the ball to somebody when they're out of bounds, not before. That got us moving, into motion, before that. Then it was just sideways from there. It's very disappointing that that play was allowed to continue. From our vantage point, that was a botched play. You just set it again. That happens a million times during the course of an NBA season," said Spoelstra.

"All I know is by the time [I] turned to get it backcourt, Dion still had the ball. It definitely took us out of what we wanted to do," added Wade.
