Ty Lue Considered Prime Candidate For 76ers

Aug 28, 2020 1:12 PM

Ty Lue is considered one of the top coaching candidates this offseason and is seeking $7 million per season, a league source tells Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Lue is the prime candidate for the Philadelphia 76ers' head coaching job and is also a candidate for the New Orleans Pelicans and Brooklyn Nets, while he's also monitoring the Chicago Bulls' coaching vacancy.

Lue could settle for $5 million to $6 million per season despite seeking $7 million.

Philadelphia owes Brett Brown approximately $10 million on the final two seasons of his deal.

Lue and the 76ers have mutual interest.

Pelicans May Not Be Able To Afford To Hire Tyronn Lue

Aug 25, 2020 5:37 PM

Tyronn Lue would like to be a head coach in the NBA again and there are at least three prominent openings in which he's been linked as a candidate in the Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans and Brooklyn Nets.

Sources tell The Athletic that Lue could also be a candidate for the Houston Rockets should they move on from Mike D'Antoni.

Lue was looking for five years at $7 million per year from the Los Angeles Lakers, a deal commensurate with having won a title, but the closest they’d get was three years and $20 million.

League sources say the Pelicans are likely to cap their budget for a head coach at $5.5 million per season.

76ers 'Looking To Complement' Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid Instead Of Trading One

Aug 25, 2020 11:45 AM

Elton Brand publicly confirmed the Philadelphia 76ers have no intention of trading either Joel Embiid or Ben Simmons this offseason.

"I'm not looking to trade Ben or Joel," said Brand. "I'm looking to complement them better."

The 76ers fired Brett Brown on Monday and the conventional wisdom has been that the team would see if their next head coach can figure out how to maximize Embiid and Simmons together before making a major move.

With the 76ers having both Al Horford and Tobias Harris under contracts that will be difficult to trade, it is likely they will need to change their schemes with current personnel rather than a wholesale change of the roster surrounding Embiid and Simmons.

76ers Fire Brett Brown As Head Coach

Aug 24, 2020 5:35 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers have fired Brett Brown as head coach. Brown was hired as head coach in August of 2013.

"In 2013, I was employed to lead one of the most dramatic rebuilds in professional sports history," said Brown. In the past seven years, our players and coaches have evolved and grown, and I have deep appreciation for the 102 players I have coached. I am grateful for my coaching staffs and their dedication to our common goal, while also proud to see three of my former assistants now deservedly, NBA Head Coaches and one a major college Head Coach.

"I would also like to thank the ownership group, led by Josh Harris and David Blitzer, former GM Sam Hinkie, the 76ers’ historic alumni, our passionate fans, and finally current GM Elton Brand, who I coached and worked for. He is a high-character talent that the 76ers are fortunate to have. I sincerely wish him, the players, and the next coaching staff my very best in their pursuit of an NBA championship."

“I have a tremendous level of respect for Brett both personally and professionally and appreciate all he’s done for the 76ers organization and the City of Philadelphia,” Elton Brand said. “He did many positive things during his time here, developing young talent and helping position our team for three straight postseason appearances. Unfortunately, we fell well short of our goals this year and I believe it is best to go in a new direction. This will be an important offseason for us as we look to get back on track towards our goal of competing for an NBA championship.”

“I want to thank Brett for not only what he did as our Head Coach, but for the impactful community work he and his family did across the Greater Philadelphia Area over the last seven years,” said Josh Harris, 76ers Managing Partner. “He is a high-character coach and leader and we’re fortunate to have had him here. This is a difficult decision, but one we believe is necessary. I wish Brett and his family well.”

Ime Udoka, Ty Lue, Jay Wright, Dave Joerger Considered Candidates For 76ers

Aug 24, 2020 10:54 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers are widely expected to part ways with Brett Brown and search for a new head coach.

Sources tell Shams Charania of The Athletic that Ime Udoka, Ty Lue, Jay Wright and Dave Joerger are potential candidates for the job.

Udoka spent this past season as an assistant coach with the 76ers after several seasons with the San Antonio Spurs. Udoka has been a candidate for a number of head coaching jobs in the past.

Lue is currently an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Clippers and has been mentioned as a favorite for several jobs.

Wright has long been sought after from the NBA but so far has elected to remain at Villanova.

Joerger was fired by the Sacramento Kings at the end of the 18-19 season.

Joel Embiid Wonders About His Own Future With 76ers

Aug 24, 2020 8:23 AM

Joel Embiid wondered aloud about his future with the Philadelphia 76ers following their elimination from the playoffs in four games by the Boston Celtics.

"I don't make the decisions. I'm here in Philly. Whatever happens, happens," said Embiid, responding to a question about uncertainty with the franchise. "I've always said that I want to end my career here, and if it happens, good. If it doesn't happen, well, you move on and all that stuff."

Embiid has three years and $95 million left on his contract. Some have speculated that the 76ers may eventually have to break up the combination of Embiid and Ben Simmons to improve the balance of the team.

Embiid said several times after the loss that he "isn't the GM" but seemed to question some of the moves the team has made over the past two years.

"I just feel like, a couple years ago, when we made the playoffs for the first time, we had a bunch of great players that were drafted here or either formed in Philly and we had a bunch of guys especially that were in a great situation," Embiid said.

"And then we, as you know, we decided to trade a lot of it with the picks and stuff for Jimmy [Butler], Tobias [Harris], and we got a bunch of great players in return. Like I said, it just didn't happen. We could never find a rhythm this year. It is disappointing. There's a lot of regrets. I felt like the focus was not always there. And we got to do better; we just got to look at ourselves in the mirror and just do better."
