Suns Layoff Approximately 30 Employees

Jul 31, 2020 11:37 PM

The Phoenix Suns have confirmed they are moving forward with an unspecific number of layoffs.

"We've been working on restructuring a number of departments since early this year," Suns Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Dean Stoyer, told The Republic, in confirming the layoffs. "We found that some of the roles were redundant, some roles were outdated and there were some roles impacted for performance reasons."

The site sports360az.com reported that 30 employees were laid off.

The Suns have also sold their G League team and have parted ways with assistant coaches Steve Blake and Larry Greer.

Stoyer separately told Sports Business Daily that COVID-19 "was not a factor" in the cuts.

Pistons Purchase G League Team From Suns

Jul 29, 2020 11:12 AM

The Detroit Pistons, the Phoenix Suns and the NBA G League today announced that the Pistons have agreed to purchase the Northern Arizona Suns from the Phoenix Suns.

The rebranded team is expected to play in a new arena currently being constructed on the campus of Wayne State University beginning in the 2021-22 season.

“I’m excited to welcome Tom Gores and the Detroit Pistons as NBA G League owners,” said NBA G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim. “It’s always bittersweet for a team to relocate, and I thank Robert Sarver and the Phoenix Suns for their time in this league and the fans in Northern Arizona for their ongoing commitment to the team.  I’m sure the fans in Detroit will welcome the team with open arms and I look forward to watching NBA G League basketball at Wayne State for seasons to come.”

The Pistons current “hybrid” affiliation with the Grand Rapids Drive will continue through the 2020-21 NBA G League season. The Phoenix Suns will continue to operate the Northern Arizona Suns for the 2020-21 season.

In May 2019, the Pistons announced a multi-faceted partnership with Wayne State University, including an NBA G League team to play in a new arena that the school is constructing for its men’s and women’s basketball programs less than two miles from both Little Caesars Arena and the Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center.

Ricky Rubio Says He Tested Positive For COVID-19, Will Figure Out Playing Load

Jul 23, 2020 1:24 AM

Ricky Rubio said he tested positive for COVID-19, which delayed his arrival to the bubble.

Rubio participated in his first practice on Tuesday.

The Suns will have their first scrimmage on Thursday, though it's unlikely that Rubio will participate.

"I feel good but we have to be smart about it. It's a preseason game. We have to figure out a plan that's day by day. We can't plan ahead like other times. We didn't know when I was going to come so we have to play it day by day," said Rubio.

Monty Williams said he will determine Rubio's playing status moving forward on Wednesday.

Steve Blake, Larry Greer No Longer On Suns Coaching Staff

Jul 19, 2020 12:37 PM

Steve Blake and Larry Greer are no longer on the Phoenix Suns coaching staff, according to Monty Williams.

"The details of it all, I don't want to get into. Organizations go through change and there are times where guys have to make decisions that are best for them and their families. It's a tough loss to not have those guys, but those decisions have to be made and as a leader, I have to respect what's best for the organization and what's best for the individuals," said Williams.

Both Blake and Greer were in their first year under Williams.

"I miss those guys, but at the same time, I've been in this long enough to know that you have to adapt," added Williams.

Knicks Linked With Potential Move For Devin Booker Due To Leon Rose Relationship

Jul 4, 2020 5:38 PM

The New York Knicks could potentially make a move for Devin Booker due to his prior relationship with Leon Rose, league sources told Marc Berman of the New York Post.

Rose was Booker's agent, with William Wesley reportedly also close to Booker due to their Kentucky ties.

In regarding potential trades involving the Knicks, Berman writes that "the player to watch out for most is Suns combo guard Devin Booker."

Rose said last week that he wants to improve the Knicks through all avenues, including the draft, free agency, and trades.

“I think he’ll do unbelievable. One of the most genuine guys I know. One of the most honest guys I know. So I’m happy for him in his new position. I think the Knicks are in really good hands," Booker said of Rose after his hire.
