Rudy Gobert Says Taste Has Returned, But 'Smell Is Still Not 100%'

Jun 28, 2020 3:16 PM

Rudy Gobert said that he is still feeling the side effects from COVID-19.

“The taste has returned, but the smell is still not 100%. I can smell the smells, but not from afar. I spoke to specialists, who told me that it could take up to a year," said Gobert in an interview with L'Equipe.

Gobert's positive test on March 11th shut down the NBA season.

Gobert added that he still feels "weird things," though he doesn't necessarily know if they are attributable to the virus.

"I still feel weird things, but I have never been so long in my life without playing a basketball game! I don’t know if that’s the backlash of the virus. ... Today, I wouldn’t say I’m feeling more tired than before. But I had experiences, a month and a half ago, that scared me. I felt like ants in my toes and wondered what it could be. There were quite a few little things like that."

Jayson Tatum, Donovan Mitchell Impacted By Insurance Policies That Run Through June 30th

Jun 18, 2020 10:09 AM

Jayson Tatum and Donovan Mitchell are eligible for contract extensions this offseason and there have been reports that both players have some level of reservations about playing in the NBA's return-to-play plan.

According to league sources, the issue is based on insurance policies taken out by the players that would run out at the traditional end of the NBA calendar on June 30th. But the season will be extended until October, which puts those policies into question. There are ongoing talks between represenatives of the players and the league, but both Tatum and Mitchell are expected to play.

Tatum and Mitchell are members of the 2017 NBA Draft class.

Donovan Mitchell, Jayson Tatum, & Others Seek Insurance Policies For Potential Career-Threatening Injuries

Jun 13, 2020 4:01 PM

Bam AdebayoD'Aaron Fox, Kyle KuzmaDonovan Mitchell and Jayson Tatum had a call with Players Association officials over the possibility of receiving league-financed insurance policies that would protect them against career-threatening injuries suffered in Orlando.

As part of the 2017 class, the five players are eligible for rookie extensions starting in the upcoming free agency period.

The five players believe they are taking on added personal risk due to the possibility of an increase in injuries after taking three months off.

The NBPA and NBA have previously discussed protections in the case of serious COVID-19 illness or career-threatening injury in Orlando.

Insurance policies for the five players could cost in the range of $500,000, though it would be difficult to prove that an injury affected future earnings unless it was career-ending.

Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Donovan Mitchell, CJ McCollum Express Desire Not To Continue Season

Jun 13, 2020 12:49 AM

Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Donovan Mitchell, and CJ McCollum were among those who expressed their desire to not resume the NBA season during a call that featured 80-plus NBA and WNBA players.

The call, arranged by Kyrie Irving, lasted one hour and 40 minutes long.

Irving, who also opposed the season resuming due to nationwide unrest, said he would support their decision to continue the season.

"If it's worth the risk, then let's go and do it. But if you're not with it, it's OK, too. We've got options for both ways. Let's just come to a middle ground as a family," said Irving.

McCollum reportedly stressed the importance of finishing out the season when taking into consideration the next CBA negotiations.

Mo Bamba said that younger players felt intimidated to express an opposing opinion, with Anthony assuring him that their voice will be heard.

The players on the call also vowed to eventually gather together to continue the discussion on ending racial injustice.
