Ziaire Williams Out 4-6 More Weeks With Right Knee Soreness

Ziaire Williams continues to experience right knee soreness stemming from patellar tendinitis.

Further diagnostic testing supports a return to play protocol involving progressive loading and an expected return in 4-6 weeks.

Jackson underwent surgery on his right foot in late June. 

Jackson averaged 16.3 points and 5.8 rebounds in 78 games last season.

Grizzlies, Brandon Clarke Agree To Four-Year, $52M Extension

The Memphis Grizzlies have locked up another member of their young core. Memphis and Brandon Clarke have agreed to a four-year, $52 million contract extension.

The Grizzlies have been aggressive in re-signing their own players in recent years. Memphis has reached contract extensions with Dillon Brooks, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Ja Morant before their rookie contracts expired. Memphis also signed Steven Adams and John Konchar to veteran extensions this offseason.

For his career, Clarke has averaged 10.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and nearly a block per game in 21.9 minutes per game. With Jackson sidelined to begin the season, Clarke is expected to play a bigger than usual role for the Grizzlies.

Grizzlies Exercise 23-24 Options For Desmond Bane, Ziaire Williams, Santi Aldama

The Memphis Grizzlies exercised 2023-24 rookie scale team options for Santi Aldama, Desmond Bane and Ziaire Williams. These were a fourth-year option for Bane and third-year options for Aldama and Williams.

Bane has become one of the Grizzlies key players. In his second season, Bane averaged 18.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He also shot 43.6% on three-pointers.

Aldama saw limited NBA playing time in his rookie season, but flashed good offensive ability in the G League. Aldama is expected to play a bigger role this season, with Jaren Jackson Jr. out due to injury to begin the year.

Williams showed good promise as a rookie. He averaged 8.1 points on 45% shooting. Williams' role grew month-by-month and he's expected to be a key rotation player for Memphis this season.

The Memphis Grizzlies continued their roster shuffling by waiving Matthew Hurt and Sean McDermott. Memphis also signed E.J. Onu and Romeo Weems.

All four of Hurt, McDermott, Onu and Weems are expected to play for the Memphis Hustle of the G League this season.

The Grizzlies will reportedly also sign Dakota Mathias to a contract. Mathias is also expected to play for the Hustle this upcoming season.

The Memphis Grizzlies have waived Justin Bean and Jacob Gilyard. Both players were signed to non-guaranteed training camp contracts.

In addition, the Grizzlies have signed Matthew Hurt and Sean McDermott. Hurt was allocated to the Memphis Hustle of the G League last season, but suffered a torn meniscus, ending his season without a game played.

McDermott was with the Grizzlies on a Two-Way contract during the 2020-21 season. Last season, McDermott spent part of the year with the Hustle.

All four of Bean, Gilyard, Hurt and McDermott are expected to play with the Hustle as Affiliate Players this season.

In the NBA's annual general manager survey ahead of the 22-23 season, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Memphis Grizzlies have been voted the two franchises with the most promising young core.

The Cavaliers rank first with 41 percent of the vote, while the Grizzlies rank second at 38 percent of the vote.

The Detroit Pistons are in third with 10 percent of the vote.

The New Orleans Pelicans, Oklahoma City Thunder and Orlando Magic also received votes.

Before the 21-22 season, the Atlanta Hawks received the most support in the category at 50 percent of the vote.
