Doc Rivers: Clippers Had Same Heart As 2008 Celtics

Apr 27, 2019 12:46 PM

Doc Rivers reiterated how proud he was of his current Los Angeles Clippers side, comparing them to his 2008 Boston Celtics team that won the NBA title.

"I've never been more proud of a group of guys in the 20 years that I've coached. They were just really fun. As I've said before, I've never had a group where you wanted to, in the morning, you raced to the car, you raced to practice just because you love being around them. So for me, it was just a pleasure to coach them," said Rivers.

The Clippers were eliminated in 6 games in the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Warriors.

Rivers added that the players connected with the city because of their heart and hard work.

"This was the 2008 Celtics without [Kevin] Garnett, Ray Allen, [Rajon] Rondo and Paul [Pierce]. It really was, like, same heart, played every night hard. And that's why they connected. I think you could take this team and put it in every NBA city, and when they leave, every NBA city would love this team. Because the people who come to games go to work all day. And they love to see players who play like they work. And I thought what the city saw in this team, what I saw in this team, was a hard-hat team that came to work every day. And it doesn't matter if you're blue-collar or white-collar, people appreciate workers."

The Los Angeles Clippers made a preliminary trade call to the Boston Celtics before the trade deadline to inquire on the availability of Kyrie Irving.

The call came before the Clippers traded Tobias Harris to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Celtics quickly said they were not interested in discussing a trade of Irving.

Irving will be a free agent this offseason and the Clippers figure to have enough cap space to sign two max players.

Steve Kerr Says He's Worried Patrick Beverly Will Get Whiplash From Flopping

Apr 25, 2019 10:48 PM

Steve Kerr discussed Patrick Beverly's flop that lead to Draymond Green receiving a technical foul in the 3rd quarter of the Golden State Warriors' game 5 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

"I didn't think it was a good call. You know Beverley's going to flop, and Draymond turned. It looked like Tyson punched him in the face. Beverley's good at that. His head literally snaps back. I worry he's going to get whiplash on some of these flops. But he's good at it. And the refs, they're oftentimes partial to the little guy who's down there," said Kerr.

Kerr then went on to praise the competitive nature of Beverly.

"You've got to know what you're up against when you play against Beverley. He's a competitor. That's how he's made his money in this league. That's how he's been able to stick around -- because he competes, and he makes you uncomfortable. He scraps. He goes after loose balls. I love that guy. He's a helluva competitor. He's a helluva player. I think every coach would like to have a guy like him on the team. You have to understand when you're playing against him that you have to match that edge. That's what we didn't do last night."

The Rockets don't intend to disrespect the Clippers with their travel plans.

If the Clippers upset the Warriors, Houston will host Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals.

NBA Rescinds Game 3 Technicals Against Kevin Durant, JaMychal Green

Apr 19, 2019 3:03 PM

The NBA has rescinded technical fouls against Kevin Durant and JaMychal Green.

Durant said after the game that he hoped the technical gets rescinded.

"Me and JaMychal Green, we were conversing about the play that happened before, just like you and I," Durant said. "Somebody came out of nowhere and tech'd us both. How would you feel? That was pretty quick. Hopefully they rescind that one because I don't want somebody to think somebody is in my head, that's why I got that tech. I just want to get that out of the way because I don't want to jeopardize my team in the future."

Durant is now five technicals away from an automatic one-game suspension.

Bobby Webster: Entire Season Will Play Role In Kawhi Leonard's Decision

Apr 19, 2019 9:16 AM

The Toronto Raptors took a gamble when they traded for Kawhi Leonard given how strongly he had been connected to an eventual move to either the Los Angeles Clippers or Los Angeles Lakers when he becomes a free agent this offseason.

The Lakers appear out of contention for Leonard at this point, leaving the Raptors and Clippers.

Bobby Webster was asked if Toronto's postseason result will correlate to Leonard's decision.

“Of course there is. There is,” said Webster. "It's not all about what happens at the end of the season. It's about what's gone on to this point. From the day we acquired him, it's the groundwork.”

Team officials are confident in the relationships Leonard has built with the Raptors’ medical staff, headed by former Lakers’ performance trainer Alex McKechnie.

Rivers added that he told his team to keep grinding away at halftime.

"I was honest with them. I said, 'I don't know how.' I said, 'We're going to figure this out.'"

Lou Williams lead the Clippers with 36 points and 11 assists.

Steve Kerr Warns Kevin Durant About Technical Fouls Following Ejection

Apr 14, 2019 1:48 AM

Steve Kerr said that Kevin Durant has to be wary of getting a 1-game suspension after getting ejected with two technical fouls following a confrontation with Patrick Beverly.

"We took the bait. [Durant] took the bait, and that's two technicals. You get seven technicals, your seventh one is a suspension in the playoffs. Whether you play four playoff games or 24, seven is the magic number. So he's got four to play with after one game," said Kerr.

Durant and Beverly were ejected late in the fourth quarter after they both received their second technical foul for exchanging words.

Durant described his matchup with Beverly as "fun."

"He's a Chicago kid, man -- grew up and raised in the Chicago area, so those dudes played with a different type of grit, so I can appreciate that about Pat. And we know what he's gonna bring to the table -- just physicality, mucking up the game a little bit with his physicality, his talking, just everything -- that's what he brings to each team he plays on. That's his identity, and they support him with the Clippers. So for me, I know that coming into the series, so I thought it was fun tonight," added Durant.
