Mayo Blames 'Energy Drink' For Positive Test

Jan 29, 2011 5:57 PM

Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo believes an "energy drink" he bought at a gas station contained the substance that led to his 10-game suspension.

Mayo spoke about his suspension for the first time Saturday, claiming he didn't know the drink "had any bad substances in it."

The NBA suspended Mayo on Thursday for testing positive for DHEA, which is on the league's list of banned performance-enhancing drugs.

Marc Gasol Prefers To Avoid Thinking About Impending Free Agency

Jan 29, 2011 1:59 PM

Marc Gasol will be a restricted free agent this summer and was asked if he gives much thought to rumors about teams that are expected to be interested in signing him.

"Not really," said Gasol. "Of course, you guys remind me a lot about it but that is your job. When that time comes up I will put all the cards on the table and see my options and make a decision. Right now, it’s too soon for that and the good thing about my situation is that nobody can talk to me now about it and I have no concerns, no worries, I just have to play basketball, which is what I really like."

Memphis will have the opportunity to match any offer sheet Gasol signs elsewhere, or the team can also negotiate a sign-and-trade.

The Grizzlies signed Rudy Gay and Mike Conley to sizable extensions in 2010.

Grizzlies guard Sam Young tipped the ball into the wrong basket during Friday night's game against the 76ers.

Philadelphia guard Lou Williams missed a jumper late in the first half and Young was alone under the basket to make the grab, but the ball knocked off his right hand and straight through the hoop.

Elton Brand was closest to the basket and credited with the points.

Memphis went on to defeat Philadelphia by a final of 99-94.

Mayo Suspended 10 Games For Testing Positive For DHEA

Jan 27, 2011 5:19 PM

The NBA announced today that O.J. Mayo of the Memphis Grizzlies has been suspended without pay for 10 games for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program.

His violation of the program involved a positive test for dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Mayo’s suspension will begin with tomorrow night’s game between the Grizzlies and the Philadelphia 76ers.

“I’m extremely disappointed that I’m going to miss the next 10 games, particularly as our team is making a push for the playoffs," said Mayo in a statement. "I had no idea that the over-the-counter supplement that I took was a substance banned by the NBA. It was an honest mistake, but I take full responsibility for my actions. I apologize to my fans, teammates and the Grizzlies organization for regrettably not doing the necessary research about what supplements I can put in my body.”

Grizzlies Deny Mayo Trade Rumors

Jan 15, 2011 7:21 PM

The Grizzlies have strongly denied rumors that they are looking to trade O.J. Mayo.

The most recent report linked Memphis to New York, who wanted the Grizzlies to send Mayo to the Nuggets in a potential Carmelo Anthony blockbuster.

Memphis general manager Chris Wallace said he hasn't had any conversations with New York or Denver in that regard.

Mayo's name has popped up in rumors ever since he was moved to the bench.

"Every day you look at the gossip and you look on those blogs and there are all kinds of possibilities that could happen in this league," he said.

"But most of the time they don't happen. When something gets done it's usually unexpected. ... I'm trying to turn this around and get us a playoff opportunity."
