Miami Has Options At Point Guard

Jun 30, 2008 5:59 PM

Pat Riley is looking for cheap options at point guard this summer, according to The Miami Herald.

He is interested in Kyle Lowry, which would require a trade with Memphis.

In terms of free agents the Heat will be able to look at Chris Duhon, Carlos Arroyo, Keyon Dooling, Anthony Johnson, Tyronn Lue, Jannero Pargo and Anthony Carter.

Miami also has a nice rookie option out of Kansas.

"I can't wait to see what Mario Chalmers can do," Riley said. But "I'm not expecting miracles from a young kid."

Miami Unlikely To Ink Long-Term Free Agent Deals

Jun 30, 2008 8:37 AM

The Miami Heat are not expected to sign free agents to long-term deals this summer as they attempt to keep cap space open for the 2010 free agent class, according to The South Florida Sun Sentinel.

The 2010 class could include the likes of LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Kobe Bryant, Amare Stoudemire, and Miami's own Dwyane Wade.

Pat Riley would prefer to sign any and all free agents to two-year deals, allowing them to come off the books in 2010.

"The hardest thing for us," Riley said, "is to convince free agents to take short money."

Chalmers Will Vie For Spot In Miami's Rotation

Jun 28, 2008 10:03 AM

Second-round pick Mario Chalmers is expected to make a push for an immediate spot in the Heat's rotation, according to The Miami Herald.

"We have a legitimate perfect fit," Riley said after drafting Chalmers, who will help fill the team's needs at point guard.

Marcus Banks is the only point guard the team has under contract. They extended a qualifying offer to reserve Chris Quinn, meaning it can match any offer he receives in free agency.

Riley said Banks is "at to the top of the depth chart, it's really sort of his job to lose."

Paxson Preaches Patience If Rose Is Number One

Jun 26, 2008 5:47 AM

If Derrick Rose is chosen first overall today, as many believe, John Paxson is asking people to give the young point guard time to make an impact, the Chicago Triune is reporting.

"Every team would like to think when they have a bad year they can turn it around overnight," Paxson said. "But we have to look a few years down the road and figure out how we're going to be better."

"There are 20 teams that would love to have a really good point guard," Paxson added. "Ever since the league changed the rule out front and prohibited contact on the perimeter and you can't put a forearm on a guy and ride him, you see the success of Chris Paul and Deron Williams and the difference they made in winning and losing."

"But Deron didn't jump into this overnight. His first year, he didn't start most of the season. Utah had a little bit longer-range view on him. Whether it's us or Miami, I think the same thing applies for Derrick."
